Fanfic -The Great Bangel/Spuffy Fic Swap

. I feel like a good chunk of post-NFA fics kill Spike off in the final alley battle, leaving Angel as the lone survivor

I have read the same vice versa in post-NFA Spuffy fics, but it always leaves me screaming "Hey, you are cheating! Don`t just kill Angel off. Give him something proper to do !"

Sometimes Spike is the one who tells Buffy that regardless of how she feels for him her heart is still with Angel and he steps aside so she can be happy.

I think I rather have him killed off ....🙂

Thanks for your answers. That is really interesting. And I am asking myself, what it would be like to read a fic with a Spike/Faith or a Spike/Illyria pairing.Ah, the benefits of being able to slow down time.....

I did like that Angel and Spike would talk about Buffy and both of them forgot the colour of her eyes 🙁

This made me think of The Girl in Question, when Angel says Buffy has blue eyes and Spike doesn't correct him! Maybe the Angel writers read Phoenix Burning (which I think was originally posted in 2001). 🙂

Ha, yeah, it does seem like cheating sometimes. But sometimes the grief on both of their parts over Spike is actually a good element to the story.

Admittedly I find myself unable to continue Phoenix Burning, with the reason surprisingly not being Bangel, lol. However, I will say that the chapters I did get through has made me intrigued about reading gen fics or any pairing if the storyline is interesting enough. So, that's something good to come out of this experiment for me; broadening my fanfic horizons 😀

Five chapters. To be honest, I think part of the problem was how much great things I'd heard about it, like going to see a movie that everyone says you will love and then finding that it's been blown out of proportion. I kept hearing about how Phoenix Burning was the best Bangel fic out there, how the OCs were some of the best in fanfic, how the canon character voices were so spot on... by the time I sat down to read it, all I could hear was those reviews in my head and I found myself wholly disagreeing with most of it. Too bad because the premise was interesting; I've read other future!fics before and usually enjoy them.

Which is what I meant by Bangel not being what put me off 😀 if you ever want to rec me another Bangel story with a good premise where Bangel isn't the main part of it - like an ensemble piece, which I love - then I'd be happy to give it a try 🙂

You know I actually wondered at one point if we were building it up too much! 🙂 I do think it's amazing but I admit that one of the reasons I like Yahtzee's As Time Goes By better is the 350 years in the future never quite felt real to me, especially given the way everyone talks. If you haven't read other Yahtzee fics and you want to see if it's her work, or just Phoenix Burning, that you don't like, you could try that one (which is Cangel/Bangel) or The Quality of Mercy, which I recommended to @Priceless when she was looking for fics that centered on Angel and Riley (it's not slash). Another really good and fun Bangel fic that I think anyone could enjoy is @Taaroko's Dancing with Death, a noir AU set in the 1920s.

But as a last ditch effort I'll recommend this one to put in your back pocket: Some Say in Ice - I think she does a good job of making it an ensemble piece but it is very Angel centric.

I guess I'm just a sucker for ensemble, the reason for which I've slowly been figuring out lately; I'm not as hardcore of a shipper as I thought, lol. Don't get me wrong, at the end of the day I prefer Spuffy over other pairings, but I can appreciate the show more these days for just having a multitude of great characters and so, in fanfic, I like to read about more than just Spike and Buffy. So it's not because I don't want to read intimate Bangel, but because I don't want to read intimate anything 🙂

For example, one of my favorite fics doesn't even have Buffy until chapter 40-something, and another favorite focuses just as heavily on Tara, Oz, Dawn, Willow, Giles and so on, as it does on Spuffy.

I'll keep it in my back pocket 🙂

Well I am sticking with it, although it is a bit slow going. I was happy Angel got his chest back, but a bit unsure that he managed to get the sweater Buffy died in. Not sure that was very believable. Though I'm sure I've read equally unbelievable stuff in Spuffy fics 😀 Though nothing so unbelievable as Angel and Fred! That really threw me. What do Bangel's think of Angel having feelings for Fred? Personally I thought she had more chemistry with Spike on the show.

I am also not too sure about Kean putting on plays. That just seems quite weird, but maybe I'm missing a deeper point which will become clearer to me. I'm also looking forward to seeing how they resolve the I Will Remember You issuse, as Angel seems to have forgotten that he turned back time . . .

Yes I think you're right, that Angel doesn't really remember those relationships and it's hard for him to say what happened and how he felt such a long time ago. I've nevr shipped Fred/Angel and actually see it as quite an unequal relationship. I know I'm probably in a minority of one, but I would have liked to see more Cangel, just to see where the writers would have taken it. I don't see any other man in the Buffyverse being equal to Cordy, and because I love her, I'd have liked to see Cordy happy 🙂

The writer's were pretty half-hearted and it could have been handled so much better. I liked Xander and Cordy, but I always felt he was a boy going out with a woman and she was so much more mature than him. Anya was far more suitable for Xander, but I don't feel he ever found his soul-mate on the show. I actually really like him and Dawn in the comics

Cordy and Gunn guys. It would've been magical.

There are no circumstances in which I could have been on board with Angel/Cordy. I loved their friendship. I have had such wonderful guy friends in my life and I loved seeing that strong platonic brother/sister type dynamic and romance just ruins that.

It's not that I am unable to pair Angel with anyone else over Buffy. I liked Angel with Nina and I always wanted to see more of Angel and Gwen. I thought they would've been a great couple.

I liked Gunn better with Fred. I know they played Cordy/Wes for laughs on BtVS and couldn't really go there again, but I really would have loved to see Cordy/Wes in AtS Season 2. Both had changed at that point. Or maybe they could have corporealized Dennis?

I always wanted to see more of Angel and Gwen. I thought they would've been a great couple.

I am on board with this. I also kinda dug the idea of Buffy/Wood, to be honest.

Finished! I think you were being kind too with this story as I thought the Bangel was very restrained. Yahtzee captured the characters voices really well. I loved the dream sequences and foreshadowing, that's very 'Buffy'. I enjoyed the adventure side of it, so it wasn't totally focused on Bangel. I did think it took too long for Buffy and Angel to meet, and their first meeting was so reminiscent of the show that I thought we were going to be in for some Bangel melodrama, but I was pleasantly surprised at how un-dramatic Yahtzee portrayed their relationship in the main (the scene of Buffy staking Angel was a bit ott for me)

Sumiko was probably one of my favourite new characters, especially once we knew she spoke English 🙂 I did guess that Angel would be made human, an within this story it seemed becoming human was the only way around the curse, but I thought it was quite well done. I didn't miss the scoobies at all.

I don't think I'd read another Bangel fic, unless it was promised to be very very well written, but I did enjoy this one and am glad I gave it a try. Thanks for the recommend 🙂
