Fanfic -The Great Bangel/Spuffy Fic Swap

Finished! I think you were being kind too with this story as I thought the Bangel was very restrained. Yahtzee captured the characters voices really well. I loved the dream sequences and foreshadowing, that's very 'Buffy'. I enjoyed the adventure side of it, so it wasn't totally focused on Bangel. I did think it took too long for Buffy and Angel to meet, and their first meeting was so reminiscent of the show that I thought we were going to be in for some Bangel melodrama, but I was pleasantly surprised at how un-dramatic Yahtzee portrayed their relationship in the main (the scene of Buffy staking Angel was a bit ott for me)

Sumiko was probably one of my favourite new characters, especially once we knew she spoke English 🙂 I did guess that Angel would be made human, an within this story it seemed becoming human was the only way around the curse, but I thought it was quite well done. I didn't miss the scoobies at all.

I don't think I'd read another Bangel fic, unless it was promised to be very very well written, but I did enjoy this one and am glad I gave it a try. Thanks for the recommend 🙂

So glad you enjoyed it. I did hope that the Bangel wouldn't be so over the top melodramatic that it would not throw off a die hard Spuffy so I'm glad to hear that was the case. I also loved Sumiko it was the coolest twist for me. I was really invested in these new characters. I really liked Xiaoting, I was intrigued by Sumiko's story, I disliked Markwith and I didn't trust Ishak. I think she does a good job with the character work in that sense. I'm glad that the writer didn't take the easy way out and fix the curse (I mean honestly, I am taking the easy way out on my fics lol) but it keeps the tension in the relationship. The overall making the decision to not be human is a nice call back to IWRY, it was a re-hash of the decision that some argue they should have made together back then. And it plays out differently here and works well I think.

Anyway - I am glad we participated in this experiment. I didn't think any of us were going to jump into tons of Bangel/Spuffy fics, respectively but its fun to see the world from a different perspective!

I agree! I thought it was a lot of fun. So glad you stuck with Phoenix Burning, @Priceless. If you have any other recommendations for Spuffy fics that wouldn't be too hard on a Bangel fan, I'd love to have them for future reference.

@Grace @dcai0830 I'm glad we did this. Sometimes the Spuffy v Bangel gets a bit much, so it's nice we could come together for this. If I come across anymore Spuffy fic that I think wouldn't be too much for Bangel fans I'll let you know. And vice versa of course, let us know of any Bangel fics you think wouldn't be too hard on a Spuffy fan I'll happily read them; I'm a fanfic addict 😀

I've read the first two chapters of Being Somebody Else and it's good so far! I like the setting, since Angel being in hell makes that whole question easier to deal with. 😉

I really liked these two bits of Buffy voice:

I've just read the first two chapters as well, I wasn't sure about the first person Buffy voice but I actually immediately warmed to it and could imagine Buffy and Spike interacting. I like the extra two characters in the kitchen as well.

I would like to read a Bangel fic some time. But I am not very much into epic fics. I love one-shots. It can be funny or romantic, or sad or dark (but not too much). And at least for the first time, I would prefer a Bangel fic with absolutely no mentioning of Spike. I don`t want him dead and I don`t want him in love with somebody else but Buffy. Do you know any bangel fics, that would fulfill those requirements ?

As for Spuffy recs: Would you prefer epic, funny, time-travel, AU, angsty, fluffy or anything else ?

My tastes are pretty all over the place. I'm open to anything good. Soulled Spike or pre-Season 6 is probably better for me to start with. And the less Angel bashing, the better. 🙂

I really love short fics and I have actually finished all three of them.

Pair Skating

This is like a glimpe on a day in the life of a copule that is in love and spends some time together. I love those kind of fics. I also love figure skating, that is why the theme fit well with me. The only thing that did put me off a little was, that Angel is so good at skating even though, he has never done it before. But it is really sweet and reading it was heartwarming.

Wish Your Heart Makes

I started to like this fic throughout the first half and suddenly a plot twist left me completely shocked 🙂. But as a missing scene it fits really well into the episode Nightmares.

This one is really, really good. It is very well written, the characters feel amazingly authentic and the story catches and foreshadows the darker mood of S6. I would give it a eight or maybe even a nine out of ten (and I have never ever give ten 🙂).

I picked that story because I thought it wouldn't be too tough on the Bangel fans. The story is one of my favourites partly because the voices sound very true to character, and I liked her writing style. I've actually not read anymore of her stories.

I have checked (after you`ve mentioned it) and yeah - the author is definetly a Spuffy. That was probably, why I liked it that much 😉

I usually check the other stories of an author, who has written a favorite story of mine, like Being Somebody Else. I don`t remember anything else of Eowyn though. Either the other stories weren`t any good or I have completely forgotten to check them. I`ll catch up and keep you informed !

On second thought the Spuffy fic, I was contemplating to recommend, is not really easy on Bangels. I have two other recommendations though. Both are very short and have either no mentioning of Angel at all or only nice things to say about him.

The first one is a S7 fic with an ensouled Spike. It is completely written from Willows POV and I especially like the voicing:

A Brief History of Now by Gwyneth Rhys

The second one is a S10 fic. It is just a glimpse of a short moment between Buffy and Spike while they get to know eacxh other (again). It is very much like the Pair Skating fic, only with a different couple 🙂

Both are on Elysian Fields, but they have no ratings, therefore you should be able to read them without registering.

There is one other - longer - Spuffy fic, which I would love to recommend, but Angel plays a major part in that and he is at the beginning somewhat....nonplussed about Spuffy Happening and later he gets paired with another character. I don`t want to tell you with whom, because I don`t want to spoil it for you, but I am not sure if a Bangel would want to read any fic with Angel and another character at all. The fic is, by the way, very dark and angsty, but that has nothing to do with Angel. That is all Spikes fault ...Lol.

There is no need to be shy about it. It is really well written and the actual story line and Buffy`s secret plan for that meeting is more convincing and more imaginative than erverything I have read so far in fanfiction about that missing scene. You really dug deep there and I loved the thought, that Spike would take care of any risks, that might remain (I am not going to say anymore, to not spoil the reading experience for anyone else). Thanks for sharing it, it is a really beautiful story.

Okay, I am putting up warnings again. This fic is very dark and sometimes violence will be described. The fic takes place in S3 of an alternate dimension, where Buffy got killed by the Master, who now terrorizes Sunnydale. But the rest of the Scoobies including Angel, who never lost his soul, still fight the good fight against the Master. And then - suddenly - our dimensions post-series Buffy and ensouled Spike fall through a dimensional portal and right into Sunnydale library.
With 160.000 words it is rather long and there will be Spuffiness at least at the beginning. If you don`t like Angel, as he is describes in this fic, right from the start, don`t give up on him. He will improve, but he will be paired with someone else - not with Buffy.

The story is called Otherwise and it is written by Sigyn. You can read it on EF as well as on AO3. I find reading on EF more comfortable but I am not sure, if you will have to register.

I think you did really well. Even though Spuffy aren't together a lot of the time, it's still very Spuffy, and the other characters can seen a bit AU. Sigyn is a great writer, but she's very dark.
