Favourite father figure in a tv show?

It is my opinion that good father figures sadly isn't a big thing in television. Fathers are often shown as abscent and uncaring. We see this for example in Btvs with Buffys father (even though I think Giles was a good father for Buffy many times).

So I wanted to know, who is your favourite father figure in a television show? It'll be good to see different aspects of fatherhood, we could do so much better with role models in this area and recognize that there are so many great dads out there who are very caring and loving and that that sides deseves to be shown too! :heart:

So, who is your favourite father figure in a tv show?

I really like Veronica Mars dad Keith Mars, but I have to say that my number 1 father in a tv show is Benjamin Sisko in Star trek: deep space nine. He is a single father to his son Jake Sisko and their relationship is just so loving and wonderful to witness. A vid to show off a little moment in their relationship:

I agree, Keith Mars is a wonderful dad !

I also like Bobby, in Supernatural. He was a great father figure to Dean & Sam !

There's also Castle, his relationship with his daughter is amazing ♥

Bobby is probably the best father figure I've seen in a show (along with Giles 😀)

Mention to Alaric Saltzman (TVD) since he took over the father's role for Jeremy and Elena. Another mention to Michael (Nikita), who is the nicest father whenever he is with his son.

Sisko, that's an understandable choice. Though functioning as an ambassador to the Bajoran prophets and what have you might mess a kid up.
And if memory serves me Sisko went kind of crazy rage filled in some episodes?

if I were to pick a father figure in a book or movie it'd be Atticus Finch from 'To kill a mockingbird'- read it when I was a kid and remember being struck out he was pretty much a perfect father figure.

But as for TV, possibly a predictable choice, but it'd probably be Giles. He even got fired, threw away his entire career in 'Helpless' to protect Buffy.

Charles Ingalls. I haven't watched Little House on The Prairie in many years, but he was a pretty good father right... ?

Sandy Cohen from the The O.C - he was so awesome to both his son Seth and his surrogate, Ryan! I have so much love for the Cohens.

Keith Scott from One Tree Hill. He wasn't Lucas' real father but he made him who he was, as well as some others along the way.

Oh and nearly every and any father figure in Harry Potter - Dumbledore, Sirius, Lupin...😀

Definitely either Castle or Keith Mars. Both know how to talk to their daughters (which isn't always easy, even IRL) and they're obviously very responsible fathers, despite having a playful demeanour.

Once again I'm struggling to think of any father figures that I really admire. What's with that, tv?

I think I'd have to pick Uncle Keith from One Tree Hill. He actually reminds me of my Dad a little bit.

Both mentioned, but I think Keith Mars and Castle are good father figures! I've only seen a bit of Castle but I love how he is with his daughter and I kinda wish I had that with my dad! There's probably others I forgot but Castle was the first thing that popped into mind!

Sandy Cohen from the The O.C - he was so awesome to both his son Seth and his surrogate, Ryan! I have so much love for the Cohens.

I totally agree with this. He's got a great relationship with Seth and Ryan, he's fun yet firm when he needs to be and he's aproachable, which is important.

Some other good fathers are: Uncle Keith (OTH), Nathan Scott (OTH), Burt Hummel (Glee) and Tom Scavo (DHW).

Aw, I forgot about Burt! I love Burt! 🙂 Also, wasn't Leo in charmed a pretty good dad? I can't remember that much of the show, it was a very long time since I watched 🙂

For me, it's John Schneider in "Smallville" as Jonathan Kent. He was always such a loving, warm father to Clark and it always warmed my heart to watch them together. 🙂

I have to agree that Giles was a super father figure! 🙂 and I also thought Sisko was a good dad too but I can't really think of any others :S

As I was reading the thread title my answer popped right into my head. Keith Mars all the way. It is rare to see a positive single father figure on TV and their relationship was just brilliant. He wasn't just a sideline character either which can often happen on shows. I loved the little quips, the songs and even cried like a baby when Veronica got the paternity results "Whose your Daddy".

This one goes back a ways, but the show is still around in syndication. This is the greatest father to ever be portrayed on television or in the movies. About the greatest compliment that I can give to Pa Cartwright is that he's almost a tenth of the father I was blessed with. They just don't get any better than that...

Dr. Harold Abbot on Everwood. Funnily enough, the show was supposed to be more about Andy Brown improving his father skills but he was a complete joke in that department (and many others), compared to Harold.

Wayne Fileds on Pretty Little Liars. He has been in only few episodes he is by far the best father in the show. Of course, that's not much a contest considering the rest are cheaters, deadbeats and so on, but still...🙂

Luke on Gilmore Girls - he wasn't Rory's father but often acted like on and later did pretty well with his long lost daughter.

And obviously Giles.
