Favourite LGBT character on a tv show?

I know technically she's in the comics and not on tv, but I can't believe I forgot Satsu!!

I adore Satsu. Kickass, brave, heart on her sleeve Asian girl who's also in love with Buffy summers. I wish we would've seen more of her.
And speaking of comics- Kate Kane as Batwoman is BOSS.

-Willow
-Tara
-Lily Aldrin (is bisexual, I don't care what anyone says)
-Dean Winchester (is bisexual, I don't care what anyone says)
-Jack Harkness (I'm assuming pan characters can be included here)
-Kevin Walker from Brothers and Sisters
-Scotty Wandell from Brothers and Sisters
-Adam Torres from Degrassi ***SPECIAL NOTE: this is the best I've ever seen the transgender issue be handled. I haven't watched anything since it came back a couple months ago, but up to what aired this passed summer... the issue of transgender and Adam's character was handled so wonderfully. There is a reason the actress who plays him was nominated for an Emmy last year.
-Thirteen from House
-Max from Happy Endings

There are other LGBT characters that I love... but these are my favorites.

Even though I don't watch Glee, the parts I see of Santana Lopez just amaze me. Besides Tara, she's one of my favorite lesbian characters! I just wish she were in a different show, lol.
I disagree. Santana was a bully for a really long time for absolutely no reason at all and then when it came out about her lesbianism, it was used as an excuse for why she was so mean and then all was forgiven. Being LGBT and closeted does not excuse being cruel to those around you. It can explain it, but it does not excuse it. The way that story line was handled is the exact reason why I hate Glee. It is very problematic, but markets itself as if it's activism.

LGBT here is a description. It's like asking about favorite male characters or female characters. It sets them apart from the other characters by describing this kind of character. There is no need to take offense to it.

I had actually forgotten about Omar before seeing Kean's post. I feels so ashamed of myself. Although, his sexuality is such a small facet of his character (unlike most other gay characters on TV whose gayness tends to be an important plot point, for good or bad) that he doesn't really come to mind first when I think of LGBT characters. Now, when I think of awesome TV characters, he immediately comes to mind. 🙂

Also, obviously Willow and Tara.

I'd quote you but I'm on my phone and it's being stupid lol. I admit I don't know much about Glee's story lines but I still think that even though Santana can be really mean, her experience (particularly with being closeted in an extremely homophobic environment) is something a lot of LGBTQ folks can relate to. I think that, and the fact that she is seriously in love and still dealing wih identity issues, makes her a very compelling character to me. Of course you don't have to feel the same way, but I wanted to explain my feelings.

I understand that... and I get it... I just really hate how the show used her status as closeted as an excuse for mean cruel behavior. I think her experience was very relatable... but I don't think the show handled it well. And as a character, like as a person, she's terrible. She's MEAN and vicious. She finds the thing people are the most insecure about and hounds them about it. It really is awful, she's a class A bully. But all of that gets explained and excused when her sexuality is brought up. And that disappointed me to no end.

Agreed.

But, having said that.....

My favourite is Lafayette Reynolds from True Blood. I just love him. He cracks me up, and is just a strong awesome character. I fell in love with him after that scene in season 1 with those stupid rednecks who try to send his burger back because they say it has AIDS - "Bitch, you come in my house you’re gonna eat my food the way I f**king make it! Do you understand me?......Tip your waitress." 😛😀

Captain Jack Harkness!

I love the character.

Tara and Willow are definitely up there and I've been rewatching Dawson's Creek recently and Jack McPhee is most DEFINITELY friggen adorable.

I like Santana, but I do have to agree with this. I've been closeted, but I never used that as an excuse to be mean and cruel. Nobody should get a pass for being cruel. That said, here's my list:

1. Willow
2. Tara
3. Emmett, Michael, & Justin (Queer As Folk)
4. Teddy Montgomery (90210)
5. Kurt Hummel (Glee)
6. Lafayette (True Blood)
7. Jesus (True Blood)
8. Blaine Anderson (Glee)
9. Brittany S. Pierce (Glee)

You've just unknowingly invited me to persuade you to the fact that Dean is bi... or at least non-straight.

I don't write about it as elloquently as others... so I'll link you to my favorite post on the subject. (you'll have to replace the stars in the URL with the f-word. darn censor.) http://the****ing-trenchcoat.tumblr...ugh-so-hard-when-people-say-that-dean-is-100=

I believe Dean is non-straight but afraid to admit it even to himself or give into his impulses because it's not what a typical "man's man" should do. (NOTE I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT BUT DEAN DOES) I feel we've seen a lot of canonical evidence of this... and I would LOVE the chance to ask Jensen if he checks out the guys intentionally or not. Like in Time After Time, there's this scene when he's on a street... here... another tumblr post: http://zobothehob0.tumblr.com/post/20101891350/neraiutsuze-castielinbakerstreet That HAD to be intentional. And I know, checking out a guy doesn't automatically make a guy non-straight... but combined with everything else... I just feel there's too much canonical evidence for us to ignore.

I'd also like to mention that this is not because Destiel is my OTP. Yes, I ship Destiel with every fiber of my being... and yes, it is my OTP. But I do not think Destiel would, should, or ever could be canon like a lot of the fandom because I don't think it's realistic that Dean ever actually accept his sexuality. I do not think that my belief that Dean is bi is a because of my shipping of Destiel. I think it's because there's so much canonical evidence that I couldn't ignore it.

To complement your post, in the episode where Sam & Dean were at the Supernatural Convention, there was the announcement of a panel that would talk about the homoerotic subtext of the "books". Considering Chuck's "books" are the complete transcript of S1-S3, even the writers are sticking to the fact that Dean isn't straight (and some would say Sam too, but I am completely against that idea).

I always thought of that as a shoutout to Wincest shippers. And therefore would be more of a breakdown of wincest and wincest related things. Like I thought of that line to be more like a note to the fact that they brought up Wincest in The Monster at the End of the Book rather than a note on the boys' sexualities. Although, I guess you could say that a panel dealing with homoerotic subtext would have to deal with the issue of sexuality and therefore it would talk about how Dean is 'gayer' than Sam (I hate using that term, but I didn't have another way to say it) and how it could be conceivable that Dean be attracted to men... Almost an explanation of sexuality in the 'books.' OOH I wish this panel was real and I could have seen it!

I think it was more directed to Winc est fans too, but since I will never be able to picture Sam as gay, I prefer to think it was mostly directed toward Dean.

I would've loved to be in this convention XD With all the false Sam & Dean guys!!! And Chuck and Becky!!! 😀

I went through the thread, feeling clueless about the question, but for now the only character I can really think of (or remember to be gay except Willow and Tara and the Will and Grace people) would be the first one brinkster130 mentioned, I never watched all of Dawson's Creek but I do remember being very fond of Jack McPhee (to be fair I was fond of Andie too) but I thought his story was very nice and compelling as was his friendship to Jen. I don't really remember the specifics anymore but I do remember Kerr Smith's good job (I should probably google to double check his name but if I'm wrong then please correct me!) 🙂

Oh and Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz of course from Final Fantasy, that is when they're not crying for their mother... (and oh yeah, I know they're not gay (if that's even been a question to be posed or answered, little do I know) but hey, a girl can dream right? 😀)

My favorite LGBT character on a TV show is Alice Pieszecki from "The L Word". That girl is so funny, adorable, and fierce when it comes to being an out and proud bisexual woman. I envy the character so much!

YES! I forgot about her!
I don't know a lot of the series being mentioned here, but when I was younger there was a sitcom here called 'After Henry', which was quite a gentle comedy about a widow sharing a house with her daughter and mother. The widow worked in a bookshop and her manager was a middle-aged gay man called Russell- for the time I think the character was really quite progressive because he wasn't played camp and his sexuality wasn't played for laughs- in fact it allowed the series to go in different directions because it meant that they would never do the predictable thing of having the two of them get together.

Apart from that, you can't tell me that Ernie and Bert in Sesame Street aren't a couple...

You do make some interesting points, babe. But I'm sorry, I still don't really see it.

I like Destiel, but I think its pretty much pure fantasy and has no place outside of fanfic (Glad you don't think it should be cannon either, though for different reasons to mine 🙂 )

I could accept that maybe Cas might feel that way about Dean, but Dean returning those feelings? Nah. I think he loves Cas, but he loves him like family.

As for Dean checkin out other dudes, I never really noticed that before! You could be right 🙂. But I dunno, I don't think its a sexual thing when he does that.

Yup I agree with that. (And may I just add that Wincest is just so very very wrong, ick! lol)

I think a lot of the little Destiel type moments and Wincest stuff, is a shout out to the fans, its not suppose to be taken seriously, its meant to make us laugh. It's a wink to us fans.

But hey, maybe I'm totally wrong. If Dean is bi, then I'm totally cool with it 🙂

I think you're right. All of the Wincest stuff I think is just spoken... I think most of the stuff wincest shippers see that they use as basis for their ship is brotherly love and moments. but Destiel... I think a lot of it is a shout out to the fans... but there's only so much they can do before it becomes canonical evidence of other things.

True 🙂

I'm a Dean/Jo shipper when it comes to SPN. While there are big differences in both ships, I don't think Destiel is any less valid than that ship. I know I'm pretty much delusional, its not like Dean and Jo are ever gonna happen (and not just coz
poor Jo is dead! haha
) So rock on all you Destiel shippers! 😉 😀

I never saw Dean/Jo. To me they seemed like brother and sister more than relationship stuff. As far as straight ships for Dean, I ship Dean/Lisa... mainly because of Ben. I don't care what she says, Ben is Dean's son... biologically. That is my headcanon. And even if you don't believe that.. Ben is Dean's son. End of story.
