what do you think?

giles' dream, although the shortest, was my favourite of the four. mainly because of the song, and anya's comedy act. heh.

willow's dream is my second favourite, because of the hilarious "death of a salesman" part, especially when harmony was trying to bite giles. also riley made me laugh, which is rare.

the whole episode is awesome.

Hmmm very difficult, but I voted Buffy's dream, because we saw Adam, without the demon and artificial part and because of the scene with Tara and the First Slayer!

I voted for Buffy's dream because there was alot of secrets (not anymore) about Buffy's sis coming which, at that time, I thought was very mysterious and couldn't wait to see if any strange things went on in the next season (it definately did that at the end of the ep "Buffy vs Dracula" season 5).

My second favourite dream was Willows, exactly the same reason as Captain Peroxide, "Death of the Salesman" was hilarious! 😀

Well I didn't really get that! What is "the Death of the Salesman"?

The Death of a Salesman is a very famous play written by Award-winning playwright Arthur Miller. "Salesman" was probably the greatest play that Miller did(besides marrying Marilyn Monroe). It tells the story of Willy Loman, a travelling salesman, and his family. The crux of the story is that Willy is getting on in age, and he reflects that he never did anything worthwhile in his life. The play is very depressing because in actuality the play is about a loser--Loman--who could never compete with the other successful salesman. Remember, when you are selling something, as the line goes, you are selling yourself. And Loman never could. Basically, it is a story about failed dreams and a failed life. I would recommend it--just to say that you actually read "Death of A Salesman." But, to quote Jerry Seinfeld, Willy Loman is probably the biggest loser in American Literature. The Death of a Salesman reference in "Restless" deals with the fact that a) Willow is taking Drama, a study in which you have to make others see you differently(and not as you really are). And, as we find out, "The Real Me," the Scoobie Gang comes upon a dead salesman at the Magic Box.

Oh...in the case that anybody cares, my favorite "Restless" dream is Xander's(hey, I'm a man). "I'm suppose to meet Tara and Willow. And possibly Buffy's mom."

Thanx that certainly clears things up for me, I might even read it, indeed for the sake, of saying you've read it. But this reference, doesn't it also deal with the fact of Willow being a "loser"! I just have some questions

Willow Their is also a referral to OMWF in that sequence and her addiction to magic. But what's with "The Lion, the
Witch and the Wardrobe." does anybody know this book.
Xander Why is he tested in the Bathroom but the Initiative. Why "Apocalypse Now"?
Giles no questions
Buffy World-Domination through Coffee-Makers that think?

And off course the Cheese Guy

It is part of a very famous series called The Chronicles of Narnia written by C.S. Lewis. Also, it's interesting to note that in that book a character (the lion) gives up his life willingly and then is ressurrected, which is foreshadowing to "The Gift" where Buffy also gives up her life (and is later ressurrected). Buffy's dream also foreshadows "The Gift" (when her clock says 7:30)... for more on this check out the "Dawn Prelude" thread here.

Anyway! My favorite dream was Giles' because I love his singing, the part with Buffy was really cute, and I LOVED Spike's little modeling scene!! 😀 I also loved Buffy's dream because of all the foreshadowing in it and cool scenes like Joyce living in the wall and Riley and Adam making the pillow fort lol. However, the one thing I haven't been able to get is what's up with the mud stuff Buffy puts on her face? What's its significance? Willow's dream was okay... Xander's was interesting - Anya was really funny and I especially loved when Buffy's in the sandbox and Giles and Spike are on the swings:

XANDER: Hey, there you are.
BUFFY: (putting sand in pail with plastic shovel) Are you sure it's us you
were looking for?
(Giles smiles at her.)
SPIKE: Giles here is gonna teach me to be a Watcher. Says I got the stuff.
GILES: Spike's like a son to me. (They both smile and continue swinging)
XANDER: That's good. I was into that for a while, but... (nods toward the
street) I got other stuff goin' on.

(Long shot of the ice-cream truck surrounded by kids.)
(Closer shot of Xander in the truck, wearing his striped shirt and hat,
serving ice cream to kids.)

XANDER: (in playground) You gotta have something. (Looks at Buffy) Gotta be
with movin' forward.
BUFFY: (like a proud little kid) Like a shark.
XANDER: Like a shark with feet and ... much less fins.
SPIKE: (like a proud little kid) And on land!
GILES: Very good!
(They keep swinging.)
XANDER: Buffy, are you sure you wanna play there?
(Buffy gives him a pouty look like a little kid told not to do something.)
XANDER: It's a pretty big sandbox.
BUFFY: I'm okay. (Suddenly we see her against the backdrop of the desert
from Willow's dream. Rocks, sand, scraggly trees) It's not coming for me yet.
XANDER: I just mean ... you can't protect yourself from ... some stuff.
(Buffy looks directly at him. The playground backdrop is back.)
BUFFY: I'm way ahead of you, big brother.
XANDER: Brother?
(Buffy looks at him expressionless. Soft music: a woman vocalizing without
words.)
(Spike and Giles swinging higher and higher.)
GILES: Go on, put your back into it! A Watcher scoffs at gravity.
I love that part! Well, I love the whole episode 😉

I liked everybody's dream for their own reasons, but Buffy's dream had most of the best parts. She had the fight with the first Slayer. The conversation between her, Riley, & Adam. And the cheese guy was most hilarious when he wiggled the cheese in her dream right before she had her rumble & tumble with the first Slayer.

Favorite part from Willow's dream:

Oz: Heard you're taking drama.
Willow: Uh-huh.
Oz: It's a tough course.
Willow: You took it?
Oz: Oh, I've been here forever.

Favorite parts from Xander's dream:
Xander: Hey, there you are.
Buffy: Are you sure it's us you were looking for?
Spike: Giles here is gonna teach me to be a Watcher. Says I got the stuff.
Giles: Spike's like a son to me.
Xander: That's good. I was into that for a while, but...I got other stuff goin' on. You gotta have something. Gotta be
with movin' forward.
Buffy: Like a shark.
Xander: Like a shark with feet and ... much less fins.
Spike: And on land!
Giles: Very good!
Xander: Buffy, are you sure you wanna play there? It's a pretty big sandbox.
Buffy: I'm okay. It's not coming for me yet.
Xander: I just mean ... you can't protect yourself from ... some stuff.
Buffy: I'm way ahead of you, big brother.
Xander: Brother?
Giles: Go on, put your back into it! A Watcher scoffs at gravity.
----
Giles: Hm. Now, the others have gone on ahead. (Points down the hall.) Now,
listen very carefully. Your life may depend on what I'm about to tell you.
You need- (starts speaking French)
Xander: What? Go where? I don't understand.
Giles: Ce n'est pas le temps pour des jeux.
Anya: Xander. Il faut que tu viens avec nous maintenant. On t'attends.
Giles: C'est que j'ai vous dire.
Xander: Honey, I don't... I can't hear you.
Anya: C'est pas importante. Je t'escorte.
Giles: Allons-y la.

Favorite part from Giles' dream:

When Willow & Xander use their lighters while Giles is singing. Basically, that's it.🙄

Favorite parts from Buffy's dream:
Riley: Hey there, killer.
Buffy: Riley? You're back.
Riley: I never left.
Buffy: But how did the debriefing go?
Riley: I told you not to worry about that. It went great. They made me surgeon general.
Buffy: Why didn't you come and tell me? We could have celebrated.
Riley: Oh. We're drawing up a plan for world domination. The key element? Coffeemakers that think.
Buffy: World domination? I-is that a good?
Riley: Baby, we're the government.
Adam: She's uncomfortable with certain concepts. It's understandable. Aggression is a natural human tendency. Though you and me come by it another way.
Buffy: We're not demons.
Adam: Is that a fact?
Riley: Buffy, we've got important work here. A lot of filing, giving things names.
Buffy: What was yours?
Adam: Before Adam? Not a man among us can remember.
Computer Voice: The demons have escaped. Please run for your lives.
Adam: This could be trouble.
Riley: We better make a fort.
Adam: I'll get some pillows.

Oh, the cripticness of it all!

But what's with "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." does anybody know this book.

It's a Children's book by C.S. Lewis, a popular author, especially in the Christian world. The book is widely known (to others besides Christians, I think), and it has a lot of Christian references, so it's interesting that Willow, who's Jewish, was doing a book report on that.

the Lion gave his life for his family, but what did the Witch and the Wardrobe do, where do they refer to?

I think that the mud on Buffy's face--and Buffy's face only--has to do with her "dark nature." I am just speculating, so...

Okay...here's what I think about Xander's dream. Throughout his life, Xander(and Willow) have always thought of themselves as geeks or people who never included in life..ie not popular, not atheletic, not belonging. The bathroom scene is a reflection of Xander's belief that people were judging him, making fun of him, talking about him, etc. He reflects as if he is part of an experiment. That people would want to study him, to judge him, to see what sets him apart from being normal. And what's a more perfection comparison than being a rat in lab cage.

The Apocalypse Now is scene is a little bit more in depth. First some background, Apocalypse Now is movie came out in 1979, starring Martin Sheen(President Bartlett in the West Wing), Marlon Brando(the Godfather), and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. It is based on the Joseph Conrad classic "Heart of Darkness," but the movie takes places during the Vietnam War.

If you have never seen it, I really recommend that you do. It is one of the best movies of all-time. The only drawback is that it is about 4 hours long. (Check out the early cameo by Harrison Ford, and the Ride of Valkyre scenes.)

It is about an Army Captain(Sheen)on the verge of depression and madness(check-out the opening scenes in the motel room) who is ordered by his Superiors to go up the Nung River in a naval patrol boat to arrest and/or kill an Army Colonel who has gone renegade. While going up the river, Sheen keeps on getting messages and reports about what could've happened to the Colonel and why he went renegade with his army of natives. Reading the files, Sheen realizes that the Colonel went AWOL because he believes that the Army is not winning the war the right way. In fact, the Colonel believes that the Army doesn't want to win at all. Disaffected, the Colonel goes AWOL and starts his own little war. The only difference is, as Sheen concludes is that he is WINNING the war!! Herein lies the Sheen's madness. He is told by his superiors that he has to stop a man who is WINNING the war. This of course, gives credence to the fact that the Army doesn't care whether or not they win or lose, and that Sheen is nothing more than an errand boy. What he has done to fight the war has no relevance because his superiors don't want to win.

Sheen makes his way down river--past a couple of firefights, a French rubber plantation, and helicopter full of Playboy Playmates that crashes in the jungle. Finally, Sheen arrives at his destination up the river and is immediately captured by Brando. Here, Brando and Sheen talk in a small dark room with Brando siluetted only by patches of light. He is a complete mystery.

After talking with Brando, Sheen finally realizes the Brando is doing what the Army won't do to win the war, and he starts to question whether or not to finish his mission. Brando just completely devestates not only Sheen's purpose as a soldier but also his believe that he has any revelence in his duties.

This could be said the same for Xander. He is not a witch. He is not a Slayer. He is not a Watcher. He is as Cordelia painfully put it--a zeppo. A tag-a-long. Not only in fighting Vampires, but in his life as well. He goes from one job to another--ice cream man, pizza delivery guy, door-to-door salesman, etc. He starts to question his life and his path in it.

Watching the movie, Giles blurts out, "oh it's all about the journey," meaning the trip up the river into the unknown. Which is what life is all about--a journey filled with the unknown. Everyone knows what they are(seemingly) with some purpose except for Xander. He excuses himself, and heads into the bathroom where he eventually finds himself as Synder's prisoner ala Apocalpyse Now. Immediately Synder begins to question him--who are you? where are you going? what is your purpose? Just as Brando was questioning Sheen's purpose, which is based on the lie that the Army wants to win. That Sheen was valuable to the Army's cause.

The same is asked of Xander in relation to the Slayer. What does Xander really do? What is his real function in regards to fighting evil? Xander believes that he is valuable...but he can't do any spells, doesn't have the strength to kill vampires, and can't read five languages. In the scene with Synder, Xander tries to bluff his way into telling Snyder that he is a comforter, or a soldier, or conquistador, like he told Joyce. But, Synder knowing the truth just lays into him. "I walked by your guidance counselor's office one time, "Synder begins," A bunch of you were sitting there ... waiting to be shepherded. I remember it smelled like dead flowers. Like decay. Then it hit me. The hope of our nation's future is a bunch of mulch. You're(Xander) a whipping boy. Raised by mongrels and set on a sacrificial stone."

Xander just stares at him, and he realizes that Synder--his arch nemisis from high school is right. He is nothing. He does nothing important. He isn't relevant. He contributes nothing not only to the Slayer, but to his life in general. I mean he is still living in his parent's basement. In fact, it isn't until the next season that Xander finally stands up for himself. He gets a new permanent job, he gets his own place. And he is able to start taking care of himself after he gets fed up as being as he says it himself, "Dammit! You know what? I'm sick of this crap. I'm sick of being the guy who eats insects and gets the funny syphilis. As of this moment, it's over. I'm finished being everybody's butt-monkey!"

Very well said gman992! ::dance::

I wish i had some great thoughtful ways of looking at restless that I could share with you all, but as of now, I'm drawing a blank. If I come up with something, I'll post it, promise.. ::angel::

i think buffys was the best, where she gets smarts and challanges the first slayer, i like all the eps where Buffy gets smart.

Double Post: -

BUFFY: I talk. I shop, I sneeze. I'm gonna be a fireman when the floods
roll back.
(Shot of the First Slayer lifting her chin in anger.)
BUFFY: (offscreen) There's trees in the desert since you moved out. (The
First Slayer shakes her head) And I don't sleep on a bed of bones.
(Shot of Buffy's face.)
BUFFY: (firmly) Now give me back my friends.

The site Wrestling With Restless is great to see the interpretations and symbolism displayed within the episode. I'd probably have to say that I liked Buffy's dream the best. Loved the "The demons have escaped. Please run for your lives." in the background during the Riley and Adam scene. And Adam's "I'll get the pillows." I adore symbolism, and Joss had so much in here, plus some amazing revelations and foreshadowing.

I like Xander's dream. It was funny to see him driving the ice cream trunk and look at the back and saw Willow and Tara kissing each other and he kept looking at them and they both ask him, if he wants to join in.

I thought that part was so funny. 😀
