First Look at BtVS Season 10

Yeah I wouldn't put that down to the writer, just cuz at the moment they have absolutely no idea what to do with Spike and they admitted they just threw that mini together to give him something to do.

You know, not for nothing, but this is the first time I've heard anyone say that they didn't like the Spike mini, and here's three at once.

All the other posters I've seen posting on other sites have said how much they loved the mini and the only issue that they had with it was that it forced Spike out of the main story.

Now, me, personally, I didn't like the mini. I thought it was a weak plot and Spike was very out of character, considering what had happened in the main story previously. But, like Black Eye Guy said, a lot of that has to do with the haste in which the comic was put together, however, I still think that Gischler's Spike was very, very OOC and that worries me for the upcoming season, considering he's writing for all these characters that are so well known. It just scares me.

I didn't really dislike the Spike mini... I just didn't think there was enough meat in the story to warrant its own five-issue arc.

I think it would have been better if they'd condensed it down to a really action-packed one-shot.

Well, I prefer the one-shots of season 8. In general of course, I prefer season 8. 😉

I didn't dislike the Spike series, although I prefer the couple of Spike series that IDW did. But I liked the bugs and the ship, so maybe that's just me.

Wow I absolutely hate that first Buffy cover!

And I'm still very confused how Angel and Faith will work, with Faith in the states and Angel in England.

I have NO idea what's going on here, but I like these covers much better than the previous ones.

Buffy's ponytail seems to be back, which will please a lot of people, lol, but it's the Faith cover that's got me the most excited.

Faith and Buffy back to back!!

Awesome😀

In fact I have to go and make up a new word to sum up how awesome this is, right now I'll just go with greantasome!😀

That first Buffy cover is so pretty! Little kid Giles! Donuts! The scythe! Buffy and Faith looks super cool, too...awesome!

I've been a bit on the sidelines of the fandom and comics recently, so this is actually the first time I've seen these covers. Have to say, love the one of Buffy and Faith fighting back to back.

I have a good number of reservations about the way this is going to go, but I'm cautiously optimistic for two reasons:

1) Christos Gage. I loved Angel & Faith last season, and he really seemed to get the characters in a way that the Buffy series didn't. (On a side note, he'd never watched Buffy or Angel before being offered the job, then found himself addicted once he started watching. I honestly think an outsider's perspective was sorely needed, especially since he got the characters better than the other, more entrenched writers.) I didn't expect him to write the main series, but that's enough to get me reading it. Also, while I didn't really like the Willow Wonderland arc, when he started helping with the writing, it started to sound a lot better. Let's just hope his story input is being listened to.

2) While I wasn't a big fan of the Spike miniseries, I don't think it's Victor Gischler's fault. What he did have control of (meaning the actual words of the writing) wasn't a problem, the problem was that the story only existed to change Spike's status quo, not because it was an interesting story to tell in itself.

As for how Angel & Faith will work this season? Well, it's in an interesting position, but let's see if I can put anything together here. I believe they said that, while they start off working apart, the story is going towards them being reunited later on. Looking at that then makes me wonder how exactly they handle the crossover: Is Buffy going to be in both series at the beginning? Is Faith going to be in both series? Both of those? Like I said, I have faith in the writers (not necessarily for the other people who were working on the story), so this could still end up working out. Season Nine had its problems and its bright spots, and it seems like more of the second made it into this season than the first. Hopefully.

Well, let me tell you this much, I did the same thing with Gischler that I did before start of S9 with Gage - I read his other works in order to see what to expect - even tentatively.

I want to say that my estimate of CG was a bit off - I expected much less of him. On other hand, now in retrospect I can see what I missed and what proved to be his 'style' of storytelling.

Firstly, CG tries his best to write complex villains with complex, sometimes murky and esoteric ( not clear-cut) motivations. Secondly, he has personal fixation on the macabre side of the story. Expect lots of truly ghoulish stuff from him, edging on yer classic horrors, with a lots and lots of blood, gore, viscera and psycho horror. On other hand, he is rather shy when it comes to writing any sexual situation at all, and prefers to hint at the stuff happening off screen. CG is also - unfortunately - not very good at getting into the heads of his female characters. He writes a lot of them , but they turn out to be sort of flat. He had Rebekah though fleshing out the visuals, and she has a streak of romantic exaggeration in her art, liking to draw all things very pretty, male character super-masculine , female characters a bit overdressed and over endowed with flowing hair etc - but she does it on the romantic side of it, so it stays borderline tasteful. Her horrors are less horrific because of it, but it is still very good visualization of all things fantastic.

I have no idea what A&F artist is going to be all about, but I suspect they are not going to be anywhere close on pair with Rebekah.

Gischler, on other hand has a tendency to overdo gratuitous sex in his works. The sheer volume of voluptuous (naked or semi-naked) female flesh in his fantasy series is bordering on the side of teen male gratification. There is a lot of graphic sex depictions, a lot of f-bombing, and some of it (if not most of it) is utterly pointless plot-wise. To put it blunt, VG likes to write scenes featuring naked females engaged in sex a bit too much. (I remind you of his inserting Pearl shagging an insect demon in Spike mini, then having a succubus with bra size D as a supporting character - that was not an accident, it is his style.) His stronger side, on the other hand, is very dynamic fighting scenes, overall well handled multi-line-ed plot, with many secondary characters branching out of the main story plot done reasonably well. Gischlers rogue characters are usually a pleasure to read - they are funny and believable. His villains though are flat out mustache twirlers, and no quirky side or a fascination with macabre like Gage. His heroes, well, they are a bit on the boring side, but it is all very straightforward hero-ing, with clear cut motivations. (My predictions for Faith in VG's book though is that she is going to be very straight-laced , since she is a 'hero'.)

Personally, I will have a look at Gischler's second issue ( first issue will likely be heavily corrected by Gage) and then decide whether to continue A&F S10 of ignore it completely.

I'm partial to Rekebah's art (when I picture Faith, I see her art as much as I see Eliza now), so it's going to be a little strange seeing this. On the other hand, Karl Moline did Fray, so I'm interested in seeing how that looks.

EDIT: I just now noticed, and am wondering if anyone else did, that the cost of the issues went up by $0.50 each. Not a huge deal, but I can't be the only one who missed that up until now, right?

I hadn't noticed that. Thats not cool, considering the quality has gone down the further it goes along, raising the price is kinda kick to the fans that have bothered to keep up with it

There is a three-page preview of Buffy Season 10 #1 in the Serenity #1 comic that's out this week. There's nothing to link to yet, but I think I'm already in love with it.

I fangirled so hard at the Buffy preview when I finished Leaves on the Wind ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh still fangirling

My favourite part was them saying that nearly all the zompires are gone, I took that as an apology for that awful word and them basically saying the crappiness of last year is over, lol

I like the idea of zompires (not the name but the idea of vampires being something new) but the execution sucked so hard. 🙁
Hopefully the new vampires will be cooler.

Oh, and their are a few Angel and Faith preview pages over on Whedonesque plus an interview with the writer. - the art looks pretty damn good.

****SPOILERS***

It shows Faith and young Giles meeting up with Koh (?) and a group of Kennedy's slayers, in some totally messed up town. 😎

According to Dark Horse's Twitter account, Spike and Xander will be roommates this season, starting in issue #7, co-written by Nick Brendon.

SOURCE

So, does that mean that the Xander/Dawn romance is officially over or just on hiatus?

I hate the idea that they're just DONE, even after Xander's actions. The relationship was never really explored, in my opinion, it was always just background noise and that really bugs me. I'd rather have Xander trying to win back Dawn than have him living the Odd Couple life with Spike, which DH seem to be promoting, if they're twitter account can be believed.

Ba ha ha, they are really desperate for a storyline with Spike!

I'd like to think this would be interesting to see how the dynamic has changed since he stayed with him in season 5 and getting the soul, but Spike hasn't changed enough, I really doubt this will be any different, which is kinda a waste of comic book time for me, if they just rehash the same story about the two of them not getting along while living together.

In does just say IN issue 7, so it might be that they are away on a mission or something and are sharing a room, rather then from issue 7 on they will be roommates.

Though with what happened in season 9, I can understand Dawn and Xander not being together any more. I was never a fan of them together, it just didn't work, it was too weird for me, and they made each other worse with their whole "we want a life, get us out of slaying" thing, they were just annoying.

Man, Spander-shippers are going to love that! I see a tsunami of Spander fan-fic in the future. The roomies that fall in love! A heart-broken Xander and a Spike- dumped by their Summers women!😛
Oh, wow...that's just hilarious news. Does that mean Spike's getting side-lined? It sure sounds like it. Or maybe their running out of ideas, since I haven't seen a compelling Spike story arc in the entirety of DH's run, maybe they just don't know what to do with him.
