I think that the ATF arc and at least the Spike/bug ship story was supposed to be canon, but very little of none of the rest.
Whedonesque have posted a link to the Amazon listing for the first TPB of S10.

I agree, making Angel fall for Twilight's deal, even for the excuse that was given, was just wrong, and unnecessary. If they wanted to give Angel a dramatic entrance, they could have just had him fly in on Dragon Cordelia, they didn't have to make him Twilight's version of Caleb.
And I've got a sneaking suspicion that Giles is going to encounter a rapid aging spell/charm/curse/reaction of some kind before the Season ends. Either that, or he's going to develop a huge crush on Dawn. In the meantime, it's going to be interesting, seeing how a middle aged man adjusts to a return of the raging hormones of youth.

Giles having a crush on Dawn...😱
Please God, no. That's just beyond...I mean, it was kind of funny when lil' Giles got a physical reaction from Faith (guys got a pulse after all...) but Dawn? I don't wanna be queasy when I'm reading my comic book, thanks.
My worry with tiny Giles (and its a small worry given that Christos Gage is still writing him) is that they'll overdo the 'sexual hormone' jokes and have Giles crushing on one or more of the Scoobies. They're are so many other ways that they can change the group dynamic with the Scoobies, with Giles still being Giles, with all his memories and knowledge, but the others not quite taking him seriously or finding him 100% reliable...
Still, the outline of the plots is interesting...both for Buffy and for Angel (Angel investigating some magic town going's on, Faith apparently screwing up, again 🙁- can somebody give the girl a break?)

I hope you are right and that we get Giles back in his adult body. My feeling is that the whole thing is a bit cutesy - and the raging hormones jokes will get old really fast if they carry on through the season. I find myself looking forward to the Angel and Faith book slightly more because I like the idea of the Magic Town and the Gischler/Conrad team. Still, it's very early days and I'm trying to adopt a Zen approach to the comics this season and wait and see !🙂

I can't take this as canon though, I means at what point was Spike homeless and wandering the streets in season 7?

I hated every panel.
The the dialogue is clunky and awkward, like [MENTION=5973]Black Eye Guy[/MENTION] said, disjointed. He doesn't talk like Spike in S7 - actually, he doesn't really talk like Spike at all. It doesn't make sense in the space of S7.
I don't think this will make it into my 'head canon' like some of the other novels/comics. In fact, I doubt I'll read the whole thing.

We're honestly supposed to buy that S7 soulled Spike had no issue with threatening to kill Wood or rubbing it in that he killed his mother, but at the same period of time his soul stops him stealing a pair of poxy boots?

Ah, the plot seems simply enough. Spike's slow start towards redemption.
But...does it really need to be told. I mean, really.
I don't see this shedding any new light on Spike as a character.
The only thing would be the love-interest angle, which would completley undemine his 'you're the one, Buffy' speech in Touched, which I quite like, because it seems like a genuine moment from a true romantic who's never loved anyone else while he had a soul.
Two possibilities, either JM just wants Spike to have another doomed romance, or maybe it'll set the stage for this female character up to come back in future Buffy comics and be Spike's new love interest.
I'll admit, as a Spike fan, and not a Spuffy fan, that last possibility (however unlikely) appeals to me.

Apparently JM pitched the idea to Joss, and he signed off on it- so it's definitly canon.

No no no. He mentioned it to Joss and he said he liked the idea for a movie (and lets be honest he wasn't going to tell him it sucks)
James sent him the comic and Joss didn't even read it, the comic doesn't seem to be canon, the idea pitched to Joss was ages ago and wasn't fleshed out, Joss not flat out denying the idea doesn't make it canon.

Well...Buffy and Spike were (briefly) together, at least sexually. Then she broke up with him, then he tried to blackmail her and when that didn't work he tried to rape her. ('Cause, y'know, he loves her so much...😉 )
And, well, Joss is kinda a control freak. That's why he has those massive writer's summits so he approve the general direction-ness of the plots (i.e- keeping it all canon)
JM sent him the script, Joss didn't say anything (which is apparently very high praise...) and sent it back, giving his approval.
He may well have done it because he didn't want to tell his buddy that it sucked, but he's still letting it go ahead. If it's not canon, someone should get JM to shut up and stop saying that it is. 😛

Yeah like those writer summits are for the official canon stories, and James wasn't at it.
I also don't agree with James analysis that Joss not saying anything is high praise, no other writer says they submitted a script and it wasn't changed by Joss, every other writer who tells a story of getting the script approved mentions getting notes. I'd say it's like the novels, it's not official so he doesn't care.
Joss didn't actually send it back, James sent him like a complimentary copy, and just never heard back.
Joss has to sign off on the novels, but that doesn't actually make them offical. I don't know what the deal is with the comics, I can't imagine Joss signed off on all the older Dark Horse Buffy stories. I'd say DH just has a licence to publish Buffy comics, The only thing that makes them canon is Joss putting his name to them either as writer or executive producer, he isn't either for James's comic.

Has James actually said it's canon/official? I didn't think he has, I know he keeps talking about it like it is, but thats like the guys at IDW, they kept talking about the Angel comics after issue 17 like they were canon and they weren't.

The Dark Horse Buffy and Angel Comics that were published while the show was still on had Joss' approval (or the approval of his office) too, didn't make them canon. Same for the novels.

Yeah, I get the fact that the novels and DH stuff wasn't canon (unless confirmed by references elsewhere) but Joss wrote most of Season 8 of Buffy, and the writers summits are things he organises. I don't understand why he'd do any of that if he doesn't regard them as canon.
I get why some people don't like the comics, they're definitly a mixed bag (to but it somewhat mildly) but the appeal of them to a lot of fans is that its regarded as canon.
As for JM...Hmn, well, I'm sure I read a recent interview where JM indicated that it was canon and emphasised Joss's approval. (or actual lack of disapproval) Apparently that's why its set when its set. (pre-S7) I'm skeptical wheter the idea has any real merit in it, it sounds very...unambitious, as personal projects go. It sounds like some lame idea that kept bouncing around his head until he got approval. 🙄

The Spike comic - regardless of when it's set - directly contradicts the canon of the show, so I don't see how it can be taken as canon itself.
If it's set before S7, then it's wrong, because Spike appears perfectly lucid and sane, despite his appearance at the beginning of S7. He also has his duster in the comic, which he left in Buffy's house after 'Seeing Red'. So that time is out.
If it's set after he gets the duster back ('Get it Done') then it means that Spike skipped town for an unknown number of days (to buy/steal/acquire a new pair of boots, really?), long enough to find/get/buy said boots and have a fling with an OFC, which, again, contradicts what happens on the show, as we don't see Spike leave Sunnydale after 'Get it Done', which is when the main drive towards the end of the season starts.
I just cannot take it as canon.

Well no one is saying the comics aren't canon, we're saying James's book isn't canon.
The Spike book and Season 8/9/10/Angel and Faith are completely separate. James didn't get Whedons approval for the story, he got approval to do a story by Dark Horse who can produce Buffy comics, but don't produce canon material. The only reason 8/9/10/A&F are canon is becasue of Whedon. Whedon had no input in the story for the Spike graphic novel.
Even if James did say it was canon, it doesn't matter honestly. He has no say. Whedon hasn't really had a problem saying whats canon or not and he hasn't commented on the Spike book, I don't think.
I don't think James has said it is canon, he just hasn't said it's not canon, which doesn't mean it is canon. They will never say it's not canon, that would effect sales, people aren't as bothered to pick up something if it's not canon.
But if you compare the canon talk for season 8/9/10/A&F/Willow mini series/Spike mini series/Riley one shot their 'canonness' is shouted from the roof, when it came to IDWs comics, Joss was always hesitant to call it canon, he always skirted around the issue calling it good enough to be canon as it's his outline, and that he helped shape the first 17 issues, on issues after that he's silent and on James's book he's silent, that is his version of saying not canon.
