"Forever": Did you want to see Joyce?

The writers got it right this time - and Dawn, who is not a favourite of some people, showed enough forebearance and maturity to stop the spell. Everyone remembers Joyce as sje was and the lurching shadow that we saw would have been how she looked as a transmogrified zombie. It is best that we remember Joyce as she was.
 
I did not want to see her, for me it was one of the creepiest/scariest/thrilling scenes of the whole show, which would have been ruined if we'd have seen the zombie or revived Joyce
 
This is a really scary scene where less is definately more. Our imaginations do the work here.

I am glad we didn't see Joyce, and that Dawn had the maturity to rip up the photo before Buffy opened the door and saw whatever was standing there.

I always imagined she was like Professor Walsh in Primeval. As Adam says "she can hear you, but she's still a walking corpse." I think the spell Dawn performed was basically just to animate a corpse, rather than actually bring someone back to life, as Willow later did with Buffy. Spike says that the book Dawn has is "infamous" - probably because the spell doesn't achieve the desired results a lot of the time.

One of the best and most chilling moments to me is when Dawn asks "Will she still be my mom?" and after a pause, Doc replies "More or less." That to me is so sinister, even more so than if he had just said "No."
 
Not really. I think the idea of what Dawn was doing was ridiculous enough. I think it was more of a representation of Dawn's desperation and inability to deal with such a great loss.

Completely agree! Great comparison to Walsh too 🙂.

I'm glad we didnt get to see her, I think its far scarier not getting to see her and imagining instead. I have also wondered what happened to her body, but I believed her soul was safe and the body was just a body.
 
To begin with yeah but not any more. They did the whole Bambis Mum thing..it's worse when you dont see it.
 
Anyone else think the writers were inspired by Pet Semetary (sic) by Stephen King on this one?
 
I don't think NO is a strong enough word. I did not want to see Joyce. There's no way that could have been done in a tasteful way to me so I was very pleased with not seeing her. 🙂
 
I think seeing Zombie Joyce would have downplayed the intensity of the episode. It could have even been seen as comedic if the makeup wasn't just right. It's a tricky line between fear and comedy, and I think the decision (if there was one) to not show anything but a silhouette was a good one. Even then shadow of Zombie Joyce passing the window was terrifying enough. Getting so close to seeing her but then having that moment (literally) ripped away made it even more difficult for both Buffy, Dawn and the viewers.
 
Maybe the spell had worked-and it was Joyce. We'll never know but it makes for great fan fiction ideas.
