Fox Cancelled Series with Whedonverse Connections

I like most of these shows on the poll. But first I'd like to say that I think the reason people keep signing with FOX is because FOX is usually more willing to put quirky, weird stuff on the air in the first place. And it's better to have a short-lived show than no show at all, IMO.
Anyway...
- Tru Calling was in no way "bad". I liked it a lot. And if you think about it, the writers were smart for not getting into the deep mythology until the last half of season one because they probably thought they'd get canceled within five episodes. And once it started developing its mythology, I think it really kicked off and just got better and better. The first season finale was amazing. And the final episode (which wasn't meant to be the final one of season two) was excellent.
- I agree with N4H on The Inside. That show is brilliant. The best crime drama that I've ever seen. And Rachel Nichols was an amazing actress, but like N4H said, the critics completely missed the point.
- Ah, Point Pleasant. I was completely hooked on this show. I thought there could have been better casting, and more horror to the mix, and I thought it was weird that there were never any young kids to be seen, and the show was deeply flawed, but it had *tons* of potential and I truly think it would have become something excellent in its second season. Unfortunately, on FOX a show doesn't have time to iron out its kinks. Even the shows that don't need any ironing (Wonderfalls, The Inside, etc) don't have much of a chance...
- Greg the Bunny is hilarious but I've only seen two episodes. I can't say it's cancellation was a tragedy.
- I hated the characters (all but two or three) in Kitchen Confidential. I was not surprised or dismayed by it's death.
- Firefly...good, but I'm not nearly as invested in it as I am with Buffy/Angel. I'm not sure why, because it IS an awesome show in nearly every respect. I can see that when I watch it, but when I'm not watching, I hardly ever think about it.
Anyway...

I loved Wonderfalls so I bought the box set and I think that if FOX had given it a chance it could of made it I mean look at how good pushing daisies is doing and they are similar shows.

I didn't vote, but that was mainly due to only having heard of two of those shows, they are Firefly and Tru Calling. But then Australia is behind the times a bit, heck we've only just got Moonlighting in the last two or three weeks ( if you squint a bit, then look at the blonde, she looks like Kate ).
Fox seems to have a cancer that goes throughout the entire organisation.
I had dealings with Fox for two years, the entire place [ that I dealt with ] was severly rude, from the switchboard through to the executives.
IE, the switchboard answers incoming calls with 'Hello' only.
At Paramount, Universal, etc, they pleasantly say good morning [or similar].
Does Fox cut shows that have a good ratings ? yup. But in all fairness they probably only do that because the pratts in charge put the order in the box marked 'get rid of' instead of 'throw them a party'. And I do realise I may be slightly biased against them.
The only way I'd touch Fox is to weld their gates together, even though I'd have to learn how to weld I'd learn how to weld.

Almost every show on that list had horrible ratings. Fans are truly fortunate that Tru Calling got one and a half seasons because it's ratings were so mediocre FOX could have canceled it after the third episode.

I loved Tru Calling, but I agree that it wasn't the most original show in the world or even executed quite as well as I would like. But between Eliza Dushku, Jason Priestly, and Zach Galifianakis, they managed to get a good enough cast to keep it going as long as it did.

I checked firefly. I haven't seen it yet but after seeing Serenity I can't imagine that it wouldn't be brilliant. I tried tru calling but didn't like it that much.

FOX doesn't know good, intelligent shows if it marched right into their board rooms, slapped them around, and then drank some tea. I love watching The Simpsons but it's like those dumb-level quality shows are the only ones accepted by FOX. Smart shows like Firefly, Tru Calling, and Dark Angel come along and they are shut down quickly. I'm shocked Bones is still on the air with them.

Yea, for some reason, well thought out scifi-ish shows never seem to make it on the Fox network. Sure they'll give you a few episodes so you can hang yourself in their eyes. But other than that they are evil!! :bite-cha:

Yeah, they do seem to cancel any really good show despite the size of fan army.
I'd love to see where would Firefly or Tru Calling lead us if they stayed around for more.
As for the Bones they even haven't reached our channels yet. Would they ever buy it, I don't even know.

You're sadly mistaken about that.
FOX obviously likes all these "smart, intelligent" shows they put on. Otherwise, they wouldn't buy them, promote them, and air them.
Is it their fault viewers just aren't too interested in tuning in? I think not. FOX just needs to work on HOW they promote their shows and how they launch them and maybe they'd get a slightly better response.
I'm hoping the new executives can make their fall 2008 lineup a success...they're rolling out Dollhouse, The Oaks, Fringe, and a bunch of other awesome-sounding shows... *sigh*

However...one can't help noticing Wonderfalls failed with Fox at the controls. A similar offbeat production, of equivalent quality, by the same producer succeeded with ABC. Pushing Daisies. If Firefly really was commercially unviable, why has it been such a success in DVD?
On the new ones, isn't Sarah Connors Chronicles also Fox? I'm thinking the writers strike might save that one though. Fox (if that's who it is) is pretty much forced to get behind that one now, or it has nothing to replace it with.

Yea, that's a good thing, but what about next year when there is no writer strike, and all the shows people have been coming up with start pushing them. Then Fox will go .. "Hmm which scifi show are we running this year" Then they'll pull out there axe!! Unless by the grace of god they get amazing ratings and actually keep a scifi show on 🙂 That would be amazing!!

The bottom line is that for the most part, speculative fiction is never anything more than a modest success on broadcast television, with a few rare exceptions. The X-Files. Dark Angel when it was on Tuesdays. Lost. Sometimes shows are able to get a niche audience and survive a few years but it's rare, and every once and a while EVERY network gets a show that they don't want to fully support when they butt heads with the creative staff, but rarely will a network set out to kill a show, I don't care what you say.
It's mostly bad decision making and mistakes.
Wonderfalls and Firefly are not mainstream. Wonderfalls, I see how that could have been a success had FOX aired it on a different night, and given it a big push. But Firefly? Come on, that one is too offbeat, I don't think it would ever have been a ratings winner on the Big Four.
FOX doesn't even have a much worse track record with new series than any other network, as I've stated before. The other networks just have MORE new shows because of more timeslots every season. And even recently as FOX has been trying to go more mainstream they haven't had any more success than they used to.
And even if the writers weren't on strike, FOX was going to give The Sarah Connor Chronicles a big push, that's been pretty much clear ever since they announced it.

BTW it might be worth noting that Wonderfalls was originally planned to be given a really big premiere, FOX wanted to air it after American Idol, but the old executives didn't think the lesbian storyline would work, and when they failed to reach a compromise they decided they didn't want to promote it as heavily. And I'm sure that they weren't terribly sad to see it go even though I think they would have kept it had it made any sort of dent in the ratings for that night.
But talk of the old FOX is rather pointless now anyway, right? Joss said himself all the management has changed. So maybe the network will run differently now. But if a new show is still a failure, they're going to cancel it.
