Gellar: New 'Buffy' movie is 'dumbest idea ever'

What exactly makes the people involved in the new movie 'scum'? That's a pretty offensive and horrible word to use considering that we don't really know many concrete facts about the creative team behind it just yet, and there has definitely been absolutely ZERO confirmations on cast yet.

It just sounds bitter and, sorry to be blunt but, incredibly geeky to start bashing something and someone just because it's not someone that you look up to with a bizarre God complex like view.

The actions they've made is what makes me see them as scum. They seen how big Twilight, True Blood and other vampire shows, books and movies have become over the past few years and wanted a piece of the pie. They own the rights to Buffy and decided to make a movie because they think it's easy money in their pocket. That to me makes them scum. They don't care what the fans of the show have to say or cast or even Joss. They'll do whatever they can to make themselves rich.

but some people, like writers/creative teams hired for this, can really just be in it to tell a story.
I think Sarah is adorable here! The video of her speaking (in the other thread, I think?) is great. I like that she talked about Kristy Swanson. People tend to forget about her as Buffy.

I'm okay with the reboot. My only issue with it is that it's so soon, but I'm kinda interested to see it with a new writer and I figure if it bombs, it doesn't really affect us much. Last I heard Joss turned down the opportunity to work on this movie when he was first approached.

I agree that it's too soon. I also think the current Spider Man re-boot is stupid, way too soon.

What movie team doesnt have that motivation? Its not like theyre going to make it out of the goodness of their hearts. I hardly think they are scum for taking advantage of an opportunity when they saw one. They would be stupid not to.

For those that think this is a "slap in the face" to Whedon and/or the cast, why do you assume the studio didnt attempt to get them on board. I doubt very seriously that they came up with the idea to reboot and just skipped right over the people who made it successful in the first place?

The first part.
I don't think we need to bash anyone, yet. However, I must say that without Joss I personally couldn't see the film going too far. But hell, we don't know enough to be assuming that it's going to suck. I guess it could be okay.. but now Sarah has said that, I don't think any of the old cast members will be signing up for it 😛

Don't get me wrong, I love Sarah. It's good to see her around again. 🙂

I don't think the actors are being unprofessional speaking against this reboot, because I don't hear them bashing the movie itself so much as the lack of Joss Whedon participation.

I think it's kind of nice that they're taking his 'side' in this. Had he been part of the rebooting or writing I'm sure they would have shown a lot more support (whether honest or not)

Hmm, I as a fan accept that Buffy ended where it did, and I think the idea of a movie is just gonna bring buffy to the front eye, and I dont think that when a person thinks of Buffy, they shouldnt think of Joss Whedon, yes this movie could be great, I doubt it, the characters have to all be completely different, only the Buffy character would allow to be used.

So, I am against the idea, mainly because Buffy has been succesful, and it has finished, 8 years ago! And the thought that this could change everyones view of the concept is horrid..

Sarah had the reaction of me, the thought of a movie being made without Joss writing it, is just stupid.
The whole concept was his idea :/

It does feel like an attempt to cash in on the whole vampire trend that's around at the moment, but that's not to say the reboot won't be successful. I don't think it's unprofessional to state an opinion on who is at the helm of it though as it was Joss' idea that he fought incredibly hard to achieve, so the actors understand that. To me the idea of a reboot without Joss just seems like fanfiction of epic proportions, so I won't be taking it that seriously. But to the people who actually worked on the show and to Joss it must be a bit annoying to have someone else telling the story when he hasn't finished his yet. Also if people watch the film then they may buy the Buffy TV boxsets/comics so that will be good for Joss.

Still, we shall see.

It's good to hear what Sarah has to say about it, though I was expecting her to be a lot more neutral as she always seems like massively professional in interviews.

If I was Joss i'd be bashing the crap out of the movie and all those that will work on it 😛
But you have to remember, this is Hollywood and people bounce from project to project. You dont really want to bash the crap out of someone or a company and then have to relay on them to get your next project underway.

Couldn't Joss just put his foot down if he didn't want this to happen. I mean, it's gotta mean something that this was entirely his idea. Dosen't he have like a "copyright" (lol) per se to anything Buffy related? Kinda like George Lucas does with anything Star Wars related 😀

Joss sold the original movie script to the Kuzuis, which is why they're listed as Executive Producer on the shows, although they had absolutely nothing to do with production of the TV show. So they can make a movie. But it's my understanding from all of our discussions here that they can't use any of the material from either of the TV shows: so no Xander, Giles, Willow, Angel, and no Sunnydale. They can only build on the original movie.

I'm not interested in it. They didn't do that great of a job with the original movie, who's to think they'll do anything different this time around. I do agree that they came up with the idea simply to cash in on the current vampire craze.

"It was a movie. It's been made. It stars Kristy Swanson. They don't need to make another one," she said in an interview with CNN on Tuesday. "I think it's a horrible idea! To try to do a 'Buffy' without Joss Whedon? To be incredibly non-eloquent, that's the dumbest idea I've ever heard!"

Gellar is planning to return to series television for the first time since 2003 in a pilot for CBS called "The Ringer."

"I miss television, I do. It took me a while to understand that I missed it," she said. "Eight years is a really long time, especially at my age, being so young and not knowing other things and you realize you miss the familiarity, you miss the crew, you miss - it's almost like summer vacation and seeing your friends after the break."

As much as I loved the show and just about anything else that Joss does, hearing all of these people keep saying how bad a new movie is going to be is getting sort of old. Okay, Joss, Sarah, David, James, and all of the rest of the shows' regulars have had their say, so now I'm gonna have mine.

How can anyone possibly pass that kind of judgment on something that they know next to nothing about? Okay, Joss won't be writing or directing the movie, or in any way involved with it. Sarah won't be reprising the role, or even making any sort of cameo appearance. I hope that this doesn't come as a shock to anybody here, but there are any number of writers and directors in Hollywood, New York, and all over Europe who are at least as good as Joss, and quite a few who are better, some MUCH better. This new Buffy movie, if it ever does develop, may be the biggest flop to hit the big screen. But it might also be a financial and artistic success. There's just no telling until we see the finished product, and until then, it's just anybody's guess, and not even a particularly educated guess at that. I'm old enough to remember people saying that trying to make a new James Bond movie without Sean Connery was the dumbest idea that they had ever heard. The same thing was said, I have no doubt, about making a Sherlock Holmes movie without Basil Rathbone or a Tarzan movie without Johnny Weismuller. My point is, Sarah, Joss, and all of the others in the original cast are just as likely to have to eat a lot of words one of these days as they are to say "I told you so."

And as far as missing television is concerned, considering the consistently underwhelming success record, with the exception, maybe, of the Scooby Doo movies, since leaving the show, coupled with Freddie's lack of work in quite some time, what she might very well be saying is, "I miss that steady paycheck."

(The preceding was written by my cynical, evil twin brother, Black Avenger, and is not necessarily my own opinion on the subject)

How can it be a generation thing? Reboots have been hugely popular for many decades. Look at how many times Romeo and Juliet has been remade. How about Little Red Riding Hood? Retelling stories that people like can be a wonderful expression of creativity.

Reboots of things made previously in the same media -tv/movie I hate.

Rebooots of works of literature and plays I can tolerate. Many of incarnations of Shakespeare ("10 things I hate about you" is one of my favorites) have been great, as well as of Sherlock Holmes (love Guy Ritchie's reboot as well as the series "House"). Interpretations from one form of media to another, especially from literature where the picture and such is still vague enough for the reader's interpretation can be great. When it is within the same media, where we have been shown, literally, how each character looks and such, it is a mere regurgitation, with little of any beneft added IN MY VIEW.

Much dumber is Sarah's implication that, just because it has already been a movie, there's no need to ever make a Buffy movie again.

I don't know if I really care one way or another. At the end of the day if it's good, a bunch of people will be able to say "I told you so", if it's not another bunch will be able to say it.

Just a comment on the cast and their remarks. To me they are very emotionally driven. They seem to be taking exception to the mere idea of a reboot, and in a lot of ways I can't blame them. In rebooting a show that still lives on in syndication, not ten years wrapped and whose story continues to be told...well it must be insulting to the creative team. These people dedicated 7/8 years of their lives to these characters. They got no critical recognition from their industry and now that same industry is looking to redo what they feel was already done well. That's a slap in the face.

It may not be professional or classy, but I don't really think rebooting now is all that professional or classy either. Alas, these are the times we live in.

If it comes out, I'll probably go see it out of curiosity alone.

"Gum Gnome33 agrees: Actually I have to say that I'm worried people who have never seen it will think this movie represents it, even if it doesn't and it totally flops. Ugh"
This is the way of the industry. I mean everyone who doesn't know something thinks it is brand new. I just hope it is good but if it isn't oh well I guess. I mean Buffy is not the greatest show in history and this won't be the greatest movie in history so as of now it is either way to me.

Ok guys, I wasn't going to participate in this discussion but I feel really strongly about all this so I have to weigh in.

I'm proud of Sarah for speaking up. I'm proud of all of the original actors and writers who spoke up.

My feelings come from my strong emotional attachment to Buffy, what it has meant to me, and what it can still mean, in its original form, to future generations.

It also comes from the fact that I believe that a work of art needs to be preserved and if it is to be recreated, it has to be done so carefully. Let me explain.

When an orchestra performs or records a piece of music, they do everything they can to honor the composer's original intentions. We have tempo markings, dynamic markings, indications of expression and so on. We also have well documented information provided by either the composers themselves or editors/publishers who worked with them.
We take into account the history at the time the piece was written. If the piece was meant to be an attack against the Soviet rule for example, we have to play it that way. If a piece was written during a period in which instruments were different, we have to account for that as well when we play. In other words: the idea is to preserve what was originally created, and continue to expose future generations to it.

The notion of someone taking a piece of music that has been beloved to generations of people, call it the same thing and yet completely change it, is horrifying to me. I see changing Buffy-- a great work of art in its own right-- as a direct analogy to changing a symphony.

If the Kuzuis want to cash in on all of the vampire hysteria by making yet another movie about it, good for them. They can do it, so why not? But to call it Buffy The Vampire Slayer without the words and faces that made it what it is? Without Buffy's strength? Spike's passion? Xander's heart? Giles's wisdom? Willow's love? Well, then it's a different show.

Please don't rip apart something I've grown up with and keep the label on.
