Sarah Michelle Gellar announced her departure from Buffy in a glossy cover story for popular American magazine Entertainment Weekly.

"Buffy, in this incarnation, is over," she told the mag. "I hope it is the right time. This is so weird. You always worry about being the show that's been on too long - especially when you're a cult hit.

"Last year, a lot of people were ready to tear us down. [So when] we started to have such a strong year this year, I thought, 'This is how I want to go out - on top, at our best.'

"I was 18 when I started the show; I'm 26. I'm married. I never see my husband. This has been the longest span of my life in one place. There've been times where that's been difficult - you want to pick up and go, try other things, live in different places. It feels right [to go now], and you have to listen to that."

Sarah does leave a glimmer of hope for fans who cannot bear the thought of a world without Buffy: "I know they are planning a spinoff, and I would love to come back [for some episodes] - assuming, of course, that they don't kill [Buffy]. The moment I say all this, I'm going to get the last script and go, 'Oh, my God!' Look, this is so scary.'"

Sarah admits that it's been a difficult decision. "I love this job, I love the fans. I love telling the stories we tell. This isn't about leaving for a career in movies or in theatre - it's more of a personal decision. I need a rest. Teachers get sabbaticals. Actors don't."
 
she is leavin to do movies i dont care what she says. i like her dont get me wrong but its so she can be a bigger star. i dont think she will get much choice of movies i think they will be teen flicks and love storys. i think her career will fail. i am not saying this cause i dislike her i love her very much but comeon u know its true.....

That teacher comment kind of ticked me off. I am a teacher and it is the hardest job I have ever had. I believe that acting is most like just as stressful, but that million dollars in the bank account kind of make it worthwhile. I can barely get all my bills paid! I'm sure that she didn't mean the comment to be condescending, but people seem to overlook what a teacher goes through on a day to day basis.
 
I agree with you also, but I'm sure she didn't mean to offend anybody. Maybe she'll get the break she's been hoping for. But they money she makes others would love to take her place!!
 
I definately dont think she tried to offend anyone, but just made an assumption. Thats what annoys me, people always thinking that certain jobs are easy, like teaching, because you get a couple of months off. Assuming anything is bad.

On a completely different note, I can understand why SMG wants to move on, it still sucks, but it's understandable.
 
that one teacher comment shows me the kind of person she really is....the kind that thinks that acting is the hardest job in the world...the kind that is so self absorbed with their "careers" that totally lose sight of the real world...lol...all those answers were fake except for that one....
 
I have always found it amuzing how no-matter who we are or what job we have it is human nature to be more empathetic to our selves as apossed to others but at least when most of us make a mistake at work only a few people know about it but when an actress makes a mistake it is national news and when you are on top like SMG it is global news (excluding most of the medical profession f.fighters polititions law enforcement national defence )what could have more presure then an actress on top and the more popular the more presure an actors entire idenity and lively hood is based on their current success dont be so judgemental about people you dont know and none of us on this site knows what it like to be her we should respect or disrespect the personality of a person after you have gotten to know them but not from what you have read
 
and, just a side-note... teachers don't get sabbaticals. They just get to be unemployed for three months!!!

Ok, she has decided to leave, whatever the reason may be. Good luck to her!

I agree with a few of you that her movie career won't take off the way she is hoping to. Her roles in big screen features so far have not been big nor exceptionally well played. She is typecast and that is most likely the way it is going to stay.

She points out that she is 26 and married, which are facts, but her choice of words in the interview proofs that she is far from mature. She talks about sabbaticals/ time-off?!

Is she trying to convince us that she does not get time off? What about the months between filming for each season? It was her decision to take on additional jobs during her off-time.
And singling out one other profession might not be the best choice either. Anybody can take a sabbatical - and not get paid. But very few can afford it, since money in regular jobs is not as good as in acting.

Rule No1: Don't annoy your biggest fans when you want to kick-start a big screen career!

I like the girl in general, but comments like the ones she made are unnecessary. Way to go, SMG, and please grow up like Buffy did!
 
I'm sure she really didn't mean her comments how they came off, everybody says things that they didn't mean to say or just come out wrong all together, maybe that is why almost everybody is offended by her comment. My cousin is a teacher and she wasn't offended by the comment. What is the big deal?
 
OK MY GOD lets give the girl a break i say go hard and have a great time with all the best we cant all be selfish fans some of us really wish her the best

we still have 144 buffy eps to watch again and again, looking on the bright side, lets hope they make this season the best!
 
i think angelique hit it right on the nose...and waggels...i am my worst critic...and why do you think that only actresses get my rebuke??...you go ask the mods on the board...i diss equally...regardless of age...sex...race...or hottness...

she shows her attitude through her actions...i hear from this board that she never attends any conventions...kinda weird...it being that she is the main character...i mean the people that go to the conventions are hard core slayers....the kind that keep the ratings up and the kind that it would be wise to keep happy...

it seems like she thinks this job is a burden...rather than a blessing from God....i don't think she realizes that it was this role that made her career...

and i'm not selfish...i would've preffered that buffy ended at season 5 cause the show was losing its spirit...

she is a good actress...but i doubt her sincerity...

But now you've seen parts of season seven, you would disagree with that statement you've just made... would you not? (Remember no Spoiler types in this forum 😀 BBC viewers scramble in here on occaision...)

SMG feels the need to move on and it's her perogative to do so... I really don't think her movie career will expand past Scooby Doo or teen chick flicks... It's a nasty thing to say but it's true, Buffy may as well have been a curse for the lil lady since that's the first thing people think of when they see her now... Not Cruel Intentions, Scream 2, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Simply Irresistable or Scooby Doo.... it's Buffy they see...

I remember when SMG spoke about doing Scream 2, her peers would address her as Buffy rather then Sarah, which is more than likely a blow to the old self esteem, especially when these are peeps who are up there, making movies and doing it well....

Good Luck to her I say, she is after all going to need it.... 😱

The main reason that Sarah, and likewise David are not present are perhaps due to the fee for their appearance. The convention organisers would not be able to afford it, and if they did get them, the ticket prices for the attendees would be higher, which would not please the convention goers like myself. Personally I was never too fussed about meeting her but thats just me.

I do agree with Sarah saying that it should finish on a high, after all a show wants to be remembered in a good way. As for saying her movie career will not take off, I for one think that you cannot judge something like this, you can have an opinion yes, but she may surprise us, so lets just wait and see 🙂

And I get what you mean Lin..I mean The First Evil about her being known as 'Buffy' thats what people refer to her as rather than her name, it must annoy her to a certain extent.

We've had some great moments on Buffy and some not so great moments. Shouldn't that be what we look back on?
