Getting Healthier

If you're trying to lose weight, you should try to calculate how many calories you burn every day first. You burn calories even at rest, asleep, etc. This isn't the best BMR calculator I could find just now, but something like this will give you a clearer idea of what you need to aim for:

http://calcnexus.com/bmr-calculator.php?calc=1&age=36&s=1&weight=175&feet=5&inches=11&level=4

calculators like this will give you an estimate for how many calories you require a day to maintain the same body weight. If you need to lose weight, consume less calories (or increase the amount of activity/exercise) than the amount required to maintain the same body weight. I admit it is a big oversimplification (to experience good health other factors are involved, like getting the right amount of all vitamins and minerals, etc.) but I've suggested this to friends and many of them lost a lot of weight with only this information. I tried to encourage them to come to the gym with me, but none of them wanted to...but they still lost weight not changing their lifestyle at all and just by eating less, which is made much easier once you know what exactly you are consuming in calories every day and knowing how much you need. With a number to work with, you can work around it.

I could tell you more about everything if you want to know. PM me if anyone is interested.

I used to use myfitesspal, which I know isn't the most accurate of sites, but used to help me with how much I needed to consume. However I found that I could never hit the recommended amount of calories, even though to me I felt I ate loads, 3 meals a day plus snacks.

I'm not sure I'm understanding you. Are you trying to gain weight? If you're trying to lose it, you want to consume less calories, not more.

yeah, they calculate how many calories that you're supposed to eat in order to lose the weight that you said you wanted to, but I never eat that many calories anyway.

Try eating more fat. It tricks your body into thinking you have an elevated caloric intake and can artificially inflate your burning. Good fats though.. like nuts and what not.
I have a few vegan friends, the food they cook is so healthy, but also so so tasty. It's made me consider becoming veggie, at least. And to cook healthier in general. It's the small things. It becomes habit, cooking more healthily.
I'm not huge on exercise, but I make sure to walk. Everywhere. I love walking.

I think it's easier to eat healthy in the summer when all the fruit is fresh and a salad is more tempting than in the cold of winter

Ahhh. But that's when homemade soup becomes longed after. I do love winter.

About every three years I walk the equivalent of crossing Canada from Victoria to Gander and they have come with me. I doubt I would be alive at all without the dogs.
