If you're trying to lose weight, you should try to calculate how many calories you burn every day first. You burn calories even at rest, asleep, etc. This isn't the best BMR calculator I could find just now, but something like this will give you a clearer idea of what you need to aim for:
http://calcnexus.com/bmr-calculator.php?calc=1&age=36&s=1&weight=175&feet=5&inches=11&level=4
calculators like this will give you an estimate for how many calories you require a day to maintain the same body weight. If you need to lose weight, consume less calories (or increase the amount of activity/exercise) than the amount required to maintain the same body weight. I admit it is a big oversimplification (to experience good health other factors are involved, like getting the right amount of all vitamins and minerals, etc.) but I've suggested this to friends and many of them lost a lot of weight with only this information. I tried to encourage them to come to the gym with me, but none of them wanted to...but they still lost weight not changing their lifestyle at all and just by eating less, which is made much easier once you know what exactly you are consuming in calories every day and knowing how much you need. With a number to work with, you can work around it.
I could tell you more about everything if you want to know. PM me if anyone is interested.
