Giles - Silly Joke Storyline

Ok, I love Giles, I thought he was an awesome character. I also think he was pretty much useless in season 7, his inclusion was pointless. The stupid joke about whether he might be the First, I think, was a wasted opportunity. I would have killed Giles in season 7, obviously the story would have to have played differently. I wouldn't have had the scenes where we think he might have been dead, I'd just have pulled it on the audience.

I think it would have had a profound effect on season 7, on the other characters, and gave the fight something it didn't have that often - a cost.

What do you think?
 
It would have changed the dynamic of the season if one of the lead 4 had died but remained part of the group thanks to The First and honestly, i agree it would have given him something to do...but I don't know if Joss could have gotten away with it.

Having said that, the season is cram-packed with wasted stuff already this might have just been an added thing wasted.

I must say, his time with Willow at the beginning, that was interesting, I think it would have been an interesting idea if we could have followed Giles in England for a bit, perhaps meet this Coven.

I wouldn't have wanted Giles to die, no way! Personally, I thought this 'joke story' was funny, myself. It was the whole thing where he and Buffy fell out over bloody Spike that annoyed me. Especially when there wasn't even a big emotional make-up scene either. They seemed to fall over with the characterisations in season 7, and when it was always so great before, it's kinda irritating.
 
It wouldn't have worked if Giles had ended up dying. They never would have been able to pull off a happy ending if one of the core four had died, and I actually find the 'Giles joke storyline' kind of funny.
 
Despite Joss saying on more than one occasion that they knew at the beginning of the season, or perhaps because of it, it just seems to me that they tried to put too many different story lines in 22 episodes. Spike getting his soul back and Caleb leading the Bringers in an attempt to destroy the Watchers' council would have made a good season. Season 8 could have been Faith coming back to town and somehow accidentally releasing the First Evil (did you notice that I completely left out the entire Potential element? That could have been saved for Season 15 when a by then human Spike and Buffy are expecting their third child).

Third child? Ewww. I like Spuffy, and still, ewww. Heck, I love Spuffy and STILL, I am not on the baby bandwagon. lol.

Anyway, I am on the Giles bandwagon. I liked the "Is Giles the First?" joke. I do, however, think that they tried to cram too much into Season 7. A lot of the elements from season 7 could have been handed out over the next few seasons in order to make more compelling, more digestible seasons containing more consistent character growth and relationships. As it was, I think a better use of Giles in season 7 would have been to actually spend some time focusing on his attempts to rebuild the watcher council and, yes, also to resolve the Buffy/Giles falling out.

I would have been totally of the heartbrokey if they had killed Giles off. Plus, like apocolypse nerd said, it wouldn't have had the same kind of ending if one of the core four had died. Plus, aren't the core four like untouchable? I mean they've left, gone evil, died twice, got possessed but you know they always come back. They are the ones there at the very beginning so had to be there at the very end.
Plus I loved the whole 'is giles the first' thing. Because despite all I've said above about the core four always been fine, you still did wonder and panic and were like 'oh god...but is he? and i don't remember him touching anything either!'. I love Giles' reply when they attack him though and he's pretty much 'so you think im evil if I take a load of girls to the desert and *don't* touch them?'. Plus the flashback explanation had him looking very cool when he caught the axe mid air...

Upon further consideration, I was not adamant enough about the killing of my beloved Giles. I would have sobbed like I haven't sobbed since Michael's "death" on General Hospital and Stone's death on the same show about a decade earlier. I agree with everything about not touching the core 4 and packing too much into season 7 and whatnot. Mostly, though, I just don't want anything bad to happen to Giles. The very idea... *Palabra shudders.* Imagining Giles dead is worse than imagining spuffy babies!

But the season was too crammed of sub storylines.

S7 could of been about Spike gettin a soul ...idk so much about the caleb thing and the first....too much crammed into too little episodes...... if the last episode was two hours then just maybe they could of pulled something off.

8 about GIles and buffy mending their relationship, Giles restoring the council then the potentials being found and the bringers. Faith returns. And then maybe now a First show off.

I think the master and Glory should of played the first..it would of scared Buffy to see the Master and it would of been funny to hear Glory
 
It would have been better for them to play Mark metcalf and clare kramer,however its less predictable woth them playing buffy as it.It was not a wasted opportunity at all,in fact with it being the final season,they had to do something with giles otherwise it would not have tied up loose ends,and in the end thats what they did.
 
im just against slayers having kids in general, just because look at what Robin Wood went through. Slayers can't raise kids and can't expect to be alive long enough to see them grow up and thats not fair to them. but ANYWAY......

yes i was dissapointed in Giles' lack of importance in the season, but then, he hadn't planned to be there anyway in the first place. The only reason he came back in 6 was because of willow. And then he had to help her recover, and im sure he came back 1)to keep and eye on her and 2) because his plans for leaving well, backfired and now he was just too involved again to leave.

All he managed to do in 7 was cause trouble for Spike. I just wish, like most others, Giles had a little more screen time and other storyness (such a buffy-fied word) in the last season.
 
I thought Giles did nothing in season 7 except help Willow in the beginning and almost die fighting in the last episode ^_^ He really didn't have a purpose, I hoped they would have given him a bigger purpose then they did.
 
Slayers may be able to have kids.i mean you see charmed,piper raises a baby who turns into a big demon hunter in the end.but thats charmed.but there would be a chance.

Yeah and there was the one in that show where there was a Slayer who had a kid - I think that was buffy the vampire slayer.

I don't think people are calling into question that slayers procreate, but the ethical side of a slayer procreating.

If you are a Slayer and you have a pretty close expiry date, should you be having children?

FYI - my response to that is yes.

Death is a certainty for everyone, ok Slayers are in Hazardous situations, but I see no justifiable reason to give a Slayer something she is equipped to have.

If the Slayers were not meant to procreate, they'd be barren and nikki proves other wise.

Also, Charmed and Buffy are not even slightly related so I see what you are suggesting but it means absolutely nothing as an argument, sorry.
 
im not saying they shouldnt be able to, but most dont live past like...16, 17, am i right? just pointless to me and unfair to the child, who would lose their mother at such a terribly young age.

i think they included giles in season 7 because hes always been such a major part of the show. and we have that one shot in the finale where he,buffy,xander and willow just stand and chat before going into the fight. giles needed to be part of that because it went back to the beginning. also i dont think they wanted to kill him because season 7 wasnt supposed to be as depressing as season 6. lets face it, if giles had died early on it would have brought down the entire season. which would have been unfortunate seeing that there wasnt gonna be another one to pull the show out of this hole
 
I agree with schillaci on this one, although i really liked Giles it would have made a much bigger impact if Giles had ended up being the first.
It takes away from the importance of everything when they are too scared to kill anyone off and when people keep coming back from the dead.
 
I just rediscovered this thread and would like to say again: don't touch my Giles! He remains alive and unharmed forever. I would be soooo sad if Giles ever died. You don't even know. I would carry a Giles torch forever -- just like I carry a Stone torch forever.

Could they had babies? Even if they wanted to? I know that they in Angel said that vampires were sterile (The connor-stuff) and I guess it goes for both sexes. And talking of that, can vampires even produce bodily fluids? Do they use the bathroom? Hmm, never mind. I think I´ll stick to my "How can Angels hair grow"-question.

Now let´s se how well my memory works. I think Tony wanted to be evil and asked if he could be the first but got the answer "You must die first" and then he realized it wouldn´t happen. It could have been an intersting twist. I need to check the bonus materials to be sure though.

And although Giles character wasn´t as good as it could have been he still have some great lines. " So you think I´m evil if I take a load of girls to the desert and *don't* touch them?" and "Could it possibly get uglier? I used to be a highly respected Watcher. Now I'm a wounded dwarf with the mystical strength of a doily." for example.
