If Spike had actually gone to Africa at the end of Season 6 to get his chip removed, as we were misled into thinking that he was doing, how differently do you think that Buffy would have treated him in Season 7?
Am I the only one feels like they weren't misled into thinking Spike wanted the chip removed, lol? He could already hurt Buffy. He didn't need the chip removed to "get what she deserved."
And if Spike's plan WAS to get the chip removed and he succeeded, you know the first thing he would have done was go after her friends and family, with Xander being at the top of the list. As StarSlayer said, he could already hurt Buffy, and Angelus raised him to cause as much hurt as possible.
Yeah, but hurting/killing Buffy is a lot different than going out and killing all her friends and family and leaving little bits of them in gift boxes on her doorstep.
She might have had feelings for Spike, I would never deny that, but you have to remember that this is the same girl who sent Angel to hell when his soul was intact. Just because she loved someone doesn't mean she wouldn't kill them if the fate of the world and the people she loved depended on her doing that.

This in itself is troubling but it is the darker, less savoury side of Buffy's unrelenting belief in the people she cares about.I agree that she wouldn't have done anything until he actually killed someone, someone she knew or not.
I actually think Spike would go straight for Buffy herself. His approach was always more direct, he wasn't about the games like Angelus. I don't think breaking her spirit would add any extra spice to his destruction of her. I'd think he'd much rather a proper scrap. This time to the death. Just to be done with the whole thing.
Spike attempted to kill people as soon as he thought the chip didn't work ('Smashed') or when he found a loophole ('Crush'). And why shouldn't he? He's a demon; he likes to eat and kill people and the fact that he loves Buffy and would do anything for her certainly isn't a detriment to that.
But then he wouldn't need to have the chip removed to do that. So the whole double bluff thing wouldn't make much sense if we weren't supposed to believe he wouldn't go after her friends.
Although, I suppose, if he had no chip, then killed Buffy, he would be free to just disappear and live as a proper vamp. Alright, I concede to your point!
