Knitting and crochet seems to be a more popular hobby now, when it used to be seen as just an old people's thing. Alcohol is out of fashion with younger people now, who are drinking less than previous generations. I see a lot more people more wearing t shirts and leggings under dresses, so is modesty back in fashion too?

Are we going back in time with things? Being influenced by the ways of the older generations?

My dad says that when he was young in the 80s young people went out to pubs because that's where they socialised and met up with each other but he thinks nowadays young people don't need to do that because they can talk online a lot easier. So I guess drinking isn't the same culture for socialising anymore.

Covering arms and legs doesn't fall under modesty in my mind.

I think that's probably true, don't need to leave the house to talk to people now. I wonder if that's part of the increase in indoor hobbies like knitting and crochet, as you can learn everything at home online, don't have to socialise to do it. Although, at least here there's quite a few knitting groups that people join in with.

You're right that covering legs with leggings can't really be classed as dressing modestly, but there does seem to be a shift to being dressed with something under a skirt or dress, rather than just a dress or skirt or I've seen a few tights under shorts too.

Just knitting and crochet? Or other similar things, like embroidery? Cross-stitch can be really easy to do, especially from a kit.

I'm not sure, but I'd guess so, I can cross stitch and have several kits. I go to two craft groups and its mainly knitting and crochet but cross stitch has been done and this week someone was making cards as well.

I think I'm seeing more embroidered cards these days. They can be fairly easy, because the embroideries are so small.

I should get back into card making, maybe I'll look through my supplies and see about making Christmas cards this year.

I definitely want to learn more about making my own preserves once I've got the hang of veg growing!

I want to try joining a choir too, that seems to have become quiet popular again as well. However I don't want a weekly one, which they all seem to be.

I couldn't find the current anti alcohol campaign, but these ads have been on aussie tv for years. No wonder kids dont want to drink anymore ha.
We have the same sort of ads for sun exposure/skin cancer, smoking and "wrong" foods.

We used to use alcohol to calm the nerves when out and about. Now people use meds instead. The threat of ending up on social media is a not worth dancing for. I hate when people take photos of me, doing things like paying for petrol, just to mock. It would be far worse if you were drinking. Or eating a burger like the Hoff.

There is no way I could have had the teenage social life that I did, had I been living with my parents, so i think thats a big one too. Young people staying home for longer means they just dont have the same chance to rely on community for companionship, rather than family. There is so much more to say on this but probably not the point of your thread 🙂

Fashion wise, i have not seen a return to modesty, as much as bigger people everywhere. And bigger people who are shamed for the short stuff and therefore dont wear it. I still see the skinny girls in bikinis and tiny shirts and skirts. Its far more scandalous to be a bit fat and hairy than it is for skinny chicks to show skin.

I agree knitting and crochet, indoor hobbies have come back, just because the outside stuff isnt done so much. Crochet is one of the absolute cheapest hobbies to have. You can do more yarn art than you can for the same cost in paint, for example. That seemed to blow up during the pandemic.

I hated choir in school, but now I love singing with the congregation. Everyone belts out and gives it a go, its wonderful 😍

It's a return to modesty, but possibly more because "upskirting" (taking a picture under someone's skirt/dress w/o permission) has been on the rise the last few years. USA had a big upswing beginning 2016, UK in 2018. So it's POSSIBLE thatthis is less modesty and more "making sure my underwear/genitals don't end up on the internet".

Camera's used to be a lot bulkier in days gone by.
Recently there has been a lot of talk about the really high temperatures, but quite often those high temperatures are said to be the highest since the last time - that's going back to what was before. Still they might have said since the birth of the planet I suppose.

The knitting and crochet is news to me, that does seem like the national pastime of old women. I think the less alcohol and less unsafe sex are good things, partly the result of long-standing public health efforts to reduce underage drinking or drunk driving by educating people on the dangers. On the other hand, those who might have smoked or taken to the bottle in past decades do vaping today, which is apparently a lesser evil, but still probably not great. I know for me personally I've never drunk alcohol. I was somewhat tempted to try it out of curiosity when I hit the legal age, but I never did and since it's expensive I don't really care to start now. You don't really miss something when you have no idea what it is you're missing.

I've never heard of someone who said, "God, this sobriety is really killing me, if only I could kick it." You don't go to rehab to help you get back on the bottle. Maybe if you're Bender on Futurama it's dangerous to be sober for robots, but I am but a humble flesh creature with my unshiny, unmetal ass. (Speaking of, Futurama is set to return pretty soon on Hulu!!! 😀)

I'm all for more general sluttiness lol. I quote the Simpsons, "Up with mini-skirts!"

TL;DR If you're a young person looking for escapism and a good time in today's world, you're probably going to go to Steam rather than Cheers.

I did try alcohol at the legal age. It's disgusting; you didn't miss anything!

You chose wisely on alcohol. I say that despite how much deserved contempt I have for a lot of anti-drug (including alcohol) ads and browbeating I see, or experienced in school.
Much like fashion, everything comes back in style.

As for knitting and crochet, I wonder how much of a hand COVID had in it? I took up knitting at the height of the pandemic. Granted, I haven't gotten any further than sad attempts at scarves, but I learned something new!

It's kinda relaxing. Meditative almost. You're just focused on the yarn and knitting needles. YouTube has made learning new things easily accessible.

That's the best thing about the internet, one of the few original purposes/goals that remain intact. The web as a means for access to self-education for all people, at a far more affordable (usually free) experience than the old method of buying individual books or DVDs or tapes. And the access to markets for those books is much wider still than what your local store had in stock.

Much of the original web's utopian intent has been eroded away by commercial interests and monopoly power, but at least that facet as a repository for useful information is still there.

Well said!

Not sure the internet as used by a lot of my family is a good thing, even when they come to visit their noses are stuck in their phones my son for instant has no time to take his sons fishing yet I have supplied them with all the gear, when I visit I take them fishing just to get their heads out of their phone , computers etc .Pubs in the UK were places you met people other than work , but that has been removed by the excessive prices charged by pubs , having a drink with a friend of mine his drink was £6.50 a pint where you can buy 10 cans for £11.00p in the super markets, also when we had locals you not only had a real social place to meet where you met other locals you also had most landlord he took responsibility on how much you drank especially women, now cheap shop brought boze and clubs it appears there is now no control, clubs seem to serve people when they are already very intoxicated. back in the 1960s/70s there was little or none on street drinking as the only place you could get alcohol was from pubs. Internet is great for finding out things etc but now has become a very prominent part of life that my family that it needs to be checked very very frequently

You could always get yourself some steel wool and knit yourself a pot belly stove for the winter! That would be useful!

I'd definitely like to improve my knitting and crochet skills,I know how to do it, but it's keeping it even and not too tight.

I think a lot of old skills are worth learning, there's been a rise in repair cafe/mending events. Also gadgets help people with learning new things, like breadmakers, jam makers, even soup makers.

Knitted dishcloths are good. They last longer than normal ones usually, too.

People are listening to CDs and tapes again. I guess that makes me cool again, because I never stopped doing so.
Vinyl is definitely popular again.

I wonder if covid has had an impact on the amount of people now home schooling? I've definitely seen a rise in kids that don't go to school, or do shared learning.
