Would Gunn have been a better love interest for Buffy than Riley?

Gunn would fit the role of the human boyfriend, he's got vampire hunting experience and is quite proficient in it. He seems like the type that would respect Buffy's power as the slayer and not hold it against her. He would also never go to vampire whores. Gunn's methods also line up with Buffy (stake through the heart) rather than Riley's bag 'em and tag 'em approach.

Should Gunn have been on Buffy first (maybe as part of the initiative) then transferred over to Angel?

Almost anyone would have been better than Riley.....lol. Sorry you left your self open with that!!

I think I would have preferred forest over gunn but mainly because gunn made AtS better so they couldn't afford to lose him.

I'm no Riley fan. See my thread "Is Briley abusive?"

They could've had Gunn in the early part of Season 4 then shipped him off to Angel.

Hmm... not Season 2 Gunn. Maybe Season 3 Gunn, more comfortable in his skin.
I love Gunn but not sure given how guarded he was in the beginning if that would make a good pairing for an already guarded Buffy.

But if we are talking about physical pairing. Gunn> Riley for sure.

Definitely not Forrest @GoSpuffy I'll take Graham instead.

To the OP, a resounding yes! As you said, Gunn never woulda gone to that whore house, he never would've had a problem with Buffy asserting her strength on patrol and such, and he would have been supportive, just as we see him being during the run of Funn. I would not want to lose him canonically on AtS, though, but it's fine to discuss outside of 'reality' 😀

I actually really like Gunn, but I never thought of him being a couple with Buffy. I do think he would be a better fit. He's a good fighter, loyal and also has a great sense of humor. Wow, I might look for some fan fiction now.

However, I would not want Gunn to be a part of the initiative. I actually don't hate season 4, but the initiative is just so... ugh. As a black woman, I would have loved to have more representation in the Buffy series (all Whedon shows tbh).

I love this idea. My brain is already sorting through dialog between them as they exchange their respective form of witty banter, and humorously compare/contrast the different parts of LA they grew up in. (But no on him being part of the Initiative as that just changes things too much for me about how I'm envisioning Gunn.)

I also think Gunn and Xander would get along surprisingly well, even better than Gunn and Wes (before the Fred drama). Of course they'd talk about comics, but what I'd really love to see is Gunn talking about other ideas he had for vamp-killing weapons...and Xander builds them.

'Course the show would have to go a lot different since the writers really wanted to get Spuffy going, which I can't see how Gunn would allow Spike to live past early season 5 (among other meta-issues). It's jarring enough that the Scoobies did, and would only be more so to have Gunn give Spike a pass as well. And if Gunn caught Spike smelling Buffy's garments then I'd see a quick stake and vacuuming right then and there. After Gunn's experience with his sister, he'd see himself as doing Buffy a favor to be rid of Spike, whom Buffy had irrationally developed a bond for (Buffy not killing Spike in season 5 reminds me of Darla telling Angelus they can't kill Holtz, they've tortured him enough so that he's almost like family).

Not the craziest idea I've ever heard. Somehow. And definitely better than Riley.

I don't know. He seems too nonchalant to be in a relationship with Buffy.

I ship him with Faith or Cordy.

I just can't see it and I don't know how it would happen. He's Angel's friend, so that would jsut be weird. I would definitely ship Gunn and Dawn in the comics. I think they're much more fun. Gunn and Buffy would be quite dour I think, as they are both so serious and hard-edged. So it's a No from me

would definitely ship Gunn and Dawn in the comics.
But isn't Gunn just the better Xander? Is that why you're shipping them or is there some emotional connection possibility I'm not seeing?

Gunn is way better than Xander! I can't see Gunn being an asshole towards Buffy if she friendzoned him.
