Hang Out Thread

Yeah, I agree. It can be tough. I work in archaeology. Unfortunately to get a real steady job in the field you need at least an M.A. Otherwise I would bypass this whole process haha. Though I have a huge chip on my shoulder because of the education system here in the U.S. I think I might just be jaded.

What are you going to grad school for?

Archaeology is awesome! But you're right, I know a few people in that field and they are all going into a M.A. to get a job. Unfortunately, it's like that for a lot of research type jobs. Do you have the options to do an M.A. with an intership or a thesis? I find that helps because it's less class focus and more work focus.

I'm doing my MSc in chemistry right now, so I also need at least an Masters, possibly a PhD to be working in that field since I want to do research.

I am on an internship track in my program which actually is more difficult than the thesis track. We are an M.A. program that really emphasizes the internship and working so it makes sense...

I couldn't imagine going all the way to a PhD. Good for you if you go that far!

On the good side an internship will give you great contacts! And thanks, hopefully I make it that far!
You guys are really making me not miss college. 😀

Had a fun weekend running the Glow Run 5K on Saturday! Got my brother and my cousin to do it with me. We dressed up in neon and had a bunch of glow in the dark stuff (as did everyone). It was basically a moving rave and freaking awesome!! AND I managed to run the entire time without walking, which was my goal.

very good!
It's a little hot here for the UK, at the moment it's 28 degrees inside my house! I have all windows and doors open and a jumbo fan on!! Still it is nice to see some sunshine 😀

Sorry to hear that Mcfly311, any luck on the job hunt?

My vacation is just coming to an end and I'm heading back to work on Monday. It feels pretty good, or at least it will once the public transportation is up and running again, currently the trains I take are under repair (and have been since like March) and it's getting very wearisome to take an alternative route that takes a lot longer. :S

I hate when that happens
I've rejoined weight watchers, lost 3lbs in the first week, so i'm hoping to loose again next week if all goes well... but, I've also done my back in, twisted wrong, so I'm in a bit of pain this week 🙁 hey ho lol.

aw, back pain sucks, I have problems with my back too :S It's not fun
You could try swimming. It's low intensity exercise that doesn't put the muscles under any undue strain.

Plus some swimming pools (like my local) offer saunas, which are also good for muscle relief and relaxation.

Oh, and congrats on the weight loss! 🙂

Thanks :) Yer hoping to so some swimming this holiday
A few years back I went through my very own depression arc. Full cliche - suicidal thoughts, poor hygiene, stupid hairdo and of course, I got fat. Not technically obese but make no mistake, I was getting there. Rapidly. Then one day I decided, OK, this is it, I'm done being a disgusting fatso.

I lost over 20 kilograms in less than 3 months. It was trivial. I went for a 2 hour walk every day but mostly, I changed my diet. First I cut out the sugar - no more soda, sweetened tea, cakes, cookies, candy and so on, then the garbage carbohydrates - bread, potatoes, pasta, rice. I still don't eat that crap. Did not have a problem with weight ever since.

OK, that's not exactly true. I had to resort to counting calories once purely because of my stupidity. Basically, I drastically upped my workouts ( I was doing cardio only back then ) in a short period of time without really adjusting the diet. I didn't really think about it much and most importantly, I felt fine. Then one day I stand on the scales and holy shit, I'm 59 kilograms?! Underweight for a person my height. I was pretty shocked, I mean, I'm eating like an animal here and I'm underweight? I did the maths and of course, turned out I actually needed to eat around 1000 calories more every day.

By the way, have you seen this whole [HASHTAG]#Youdidnoteatthat[/HASHTAG] idiocy? Jealous, sedentary people projecting their lifestyles on those who work out. Utterly pathetic.

#youdidnoteatthat is so stupid.
I'd go with Amazon instant video (or whatever it's called) over Netflix, though over the two of them I'd take more morally ambiguous streaming services + then buying the DVDs when I'm done.

Sticking with the TV theme, I started a Friends re-watch last night, as well as finally getting round to starting Warehouse 13. The idea was to give me something to watch while all the American shows are off the air (and there's nothing major on the box here) but I think I may have bitten off more than I can chew in trying to get through all that before September. Good job I like a challenge.

On the sport/exercise theme, my soccer team plays its second ever competitive game tonight. We lost the previous game and inadvertently broke a lot of the league's regulations, which they let us get away with as it was our first time in that league. Hoping for better things tonight.

Work has been a nightmare. No evil lint or mummy hands but compared to the crushing mundanity of life in a furniture warehouse, I might actually have enjoyed some sort of supernatural interference.

So, update; I'm five-sixths of the way through Friends, I gave up with Warehouse 13 until I can buy the boxset because there seem to be no good-quality streams out there and my soccer team have still not won a game. Getting my team mates to act like a team is proving to be difficult. Technically, they're only a couple of years younger than me but in terms of maturity most of them are about 12 and getting them organised is like herding cats. Having fun and getting fitter though, and that's the main thing.

Got a job interview on Thursday, not for anything spectacular but I really want the job. I'll be lucky to pass the interview though, I've no idea how I've gotten this far to be honest.

Whoever it was who was talking about one day visiting Tintagel castle, I've been meaning to say for ages that I may be able to help you out there as my Aunt owns several holiday cottage type properties in Cornwall that she rents out. I can't promise a discount (I'll do my best though) but it might be nice for you to have a base that isn't just a hotel. So if you ever get 'round to seriously planning a visit, drop me a PM and I can pass on details.

That was me! Cornwall (and Wales too; all in one trip) is highest priority for me; it's next on the list. It will not happen any faster than summer next year though (maybe). I teach and I get summers off, but I have to go to classes some summers so that complicates things.

That sounds very nice! I'd much rather stay in a place like that. Plus, it would be a BB connection, and I really like the idea of that too. I appreciate the offer very much. I'll make you a friend if you don't mind. That way, I'll remember your offer Still a Scoobie.

Good luck with your interview, I hope you get the job.

Oh wow, we just had a horrendous thunderstorm where I live. At first I was annoyed (because it was like 5am and I wanted to sleeeeep) then it got a bit uncomfortable because it was so close, not even ten seconds between the thunder and lightning. I'm not usually afraid of thunder but this was scary. Lucky for me Buffy (my dog) did not care one bit and slept right through it. So at least that's one thing she's not scared of 😉

It's probably the same thunderstorm we had at about 7pm last night!

I thought the system in Stockholm was quite good when I was visiting at the end of June- I did the art tour but the only problem was when I was heading back to my hotel in Ulriksdal at the end of the day and this woman got on and stood opposite me with Cheez Doodle breath...

well, hang over but .. happy at the same time. still looking for work but that will come in time. i download every single comic book that was Joss related and finish Fray. I must say that I wish there was more of that comic it would be something that i would enjoy reading and now i'm going to start reading the comics that came out during the school run. yay .. what a Sunday, hang over, reading and cold pizza ..

It is good, in Stockholm. 🙂 Unfortunately I live out in the archipelago, in the outskirts of Stockholm proper, so I have to travel for work...:/ And our trains are way crappier sadly.

Lol, cheeze doodle breath... that's not so bad.😛

Its 8pm and Im sitting here cause my toddler is napping. Fell asleep in the car at almost 7, laid him down when we got home cause I didnt have the heart to wake him... now Im just afraid of how hard hell be to put down to actual bed in a couple of hours... he still hasnt woken from the nap :/

Turned out I've trapped the T3 nerve in my back 🙁 On lots of painkillers, anti-inflammatory, antibiotics and numbing pills... the painkillers are clashing with my night meds and making me feel very sick at night when I want to sleep. Not allowed to lift stuff or bend over, so minimal housework and such. Not much fun at the moment with a bad back and a numb chest and bellie on my left side. Still, could be worse I guess. Apart from that all is well lol.

That sucks 🙁 My mom has a spinal disk herniation. She has to take painkillers and some other meds as well. But she's getting better.
Get well soon!
