Hank Summers..the nearly invisible father of Buffy and Dawn. Ex-Husband of Joyce.

We saw him like 4 times throughout the entire series. He started off as somewhat normal but seemed to get worse and worse every year by blowing off Buffy.

What are your thoughts on him? And is there anything you wouldve liked Joss and co. to do with the charecter?

I think he was a bit of a scumbag, doing what he did. I wish they brought him back as a vampire though, and Buffy would have to kill him.

I suppose they could have put more into that story line but I don't think they wanted to put all the emphasis on his influence over Buffy and the choices she makes. Didn't want to give too much more power to the males in her life. Just wanted us to focus on the female strength more so that the weakness and hardship caused by the men that couldn't follow through. Wow. I'm really not a man hater...I promise. I actually love them. A lot. They're fun to toy with...I mean they're great entertainment...I mean they have many good and useful qualities and they...oh nevermind.

Yeah, Hank should've been hit by a bus.

Haha, I loved your off-topic man slip-of-the-tongue
I'm a little annoyed with the way Joss treated Hank, and part of me wonders if that has something to do with SMG and her real life father issues. Maybe Joss decided to steal a little bit of story from Sarah's home life.

I don't have anyone close to me who's gone through a divorce, but I doubt that Hank would have ignored news that his ex-wife was seriously ill, or that she had died. He should have really thgouht about Buffy and Dawn. The fact that he didn't come see them, come to the funeral, or even try to take Dawn strikes me as being very unreal.

You'd be surprised. Hank is a remarkable mirroring of my Father. And he didn't return my phone calls when my own Mother was in trouble. He had his new life and so didn't bother with us anymore.
I think the estranged father / ex-husband would have been too much to keep running. Easier to 'write him out' than add him to the storylines. Would have been a good dynamic though had they found a way to include him the storylines.

I'm glad that Hank was such a bad father, it meant Buffy's relationship with Giles got stronger and he was the best father she could ever have. 🙂

I liked the way they wrote Hank in to Buffy as being the crap father who looked at his daughter moving away a big relief but I also wish they had done a bit more with him like even show on screen him turning Buffy away. It would have been interesting to see him come to Sunnydale very briefly after Joyce died just to see how he would have been with Dawn in the picture as well but I guess at the time it wasn't really an urgent storyline for Buffy or the arc of season 5 and 6.

Pretty banner!
All I have to say is he doesn't deserve a Family like them ,he never got to know Buffy . Imagine not even being there when Joyce died , was he even there when Buffy died ?.

Karma probably got him . A life full of dull depressing days of grey skyes and mircowave meals .

He didnt know Buffy died...

But what strikes me as odd/funny is that S1 he goes to pick her up to spend some time in LA, S2 he brings her home from LA and let her do a big shopping spree. And I am sure that he picks her up again sometime. But come S3 he just turns a total 180 it seemed and blew Buffy and family off from there. And it seemed like Joss did that so he could have Giles move in as Buffys permananet father figure. But Hank did not seem like the guy who would ignore his wife of 16+ years dieing and not even care about his 15 year old daughter living with her 20 yr old jobless sister.

littlewilly - He didnt know about the deaths. wasnt he livin it up in Spain wi his secratary?

They tryed to contact him but that just proves what an ahole he really is .

Okay so I warn you I have personal issues with this here, haha.

Fathers can do a 180 like that and not just for narrative purposes. I'm from a divorced family and in my early teens my Dad was quite a regular feature in my life- he used to visit my Mom and me every wednesday evening for a visit in which we would all talk together over coffee or whatever which, according to my Mother, allowed my Father and I to maintain and nurture a bond. But then when I was around 15/16 he got a girlfriend. Which was great; he stopped being so depressed all the time! Of course she was twenty years his junior and had three kids of her own already but that's beside the point. When I was 17 he married her. When I was 18 he didn't want anything to do with us anymore. He just suddenly stopped coming and didn't even call to say so. He was quite happy with his brand new family and their holidays to Greece.
I called him for help money-wise my first year of college when I was having a little trouble with rent, but nothing came of it. I called him when my Grandmother was sick. Nothing. He didn't come to my Grandmother's funeral. When my Mother was in serious trouble- for personal reasons I'm going to choose not to say what exactly- there was not even a text of reply to my messages on his voicemail. And I don't doubt if my Mom dies, god forbid, he would not blink an eye because he has simply ceased to care.

My Father, in effect did the Hank180, that you just said was unbelievable. My point is, although that would have been for narrative ease in the series, the storyline itself, from my own experience is entirely concievable. The fact that he'd been married to Joyce for nearly two decades, that his daughters were alone, that Buffy would be struggling would have I believe been in his mind but not enough to do anything about it. Some men are just that useless and pointless and downright....::insert rude word here::.

This is getting confusing. Too many Joyces and too many dads! *hug*
Always thought that they took a really easy way out by having Hank disapear like that.

Not, that I minded.
Sure it could have been interesting if they had him back for some episodes but he was never involved in the story and didn't needed to be.

Up til now I also considered it to be quite unbelievable though... like Primal Slayer says.
But apparently it happens. That was a sad story Joyce... I feel for you.

My backup solution is that the Monks messed with things when they created Dawn.
So that Hank wouldn't come back and take Dawn from Buffy and by that way loose Buffy's protection. 🙂

I like the monk excuse there ;). And thanks but don't worry about it- I had a great Mom the whole time so we were okay mostly. And bonded in calling him rotten names!
I think they missed out on a lot of opportunities for good drama in the last few seasons with him. I really wanted to see Buffy confront him...and it was too bad we never got to see him interact with Dawn in any capacity.

Just because Hank was a father of two doesn't mean he's automatically a good dad. As my dad's fridge magnet says, "Anyone can be a father, it takes someone special to be a daddy". Hank just wasn't "Daddy" material. This happens often with divorces: the father sees the kids less and less until eventually they're not left with much of a relationship at all.

I find Hank quite fun from the fanfiction point of view; imagining Buffy and Dawn's reactions to him is always interesting. And the more years that have passed, the more so. When I watch "Something Blue" I sometimes wonder, if the wedding had actually taken place, how Hank would have reacted to find Giles giving away his daughter instead.

I'm glad that Hank was such a bad father, it meant Buffy's relationship with Giles got stronger and he was the best father she could ever have.

Couldn't agree more. Before I saw BtVS, I read up about it on the internet, and this quote stuck in my brain although I can't remember which site it was from: "She [Buffy] became the daughter he [Giles] had never had, and he became the father she had always wanted".
