Happy International Women's Day

Yes! Happy international women's day to all women on the forum!
 
It is sad that we still have to have things like this, but still there's seems to be a lot of positive events going on this year. Anyway, this evening I saw the fantastic Rebecca Hall in Christine. Its a really good film and a very brave performance from Hall who should get more credit than she does. So that seemed a fitting screening today. And right now I'm listening to a review of a Twin Peaks episode. Many great women in that show🙂
 
Well I might have a different take on supporting women. I think that women should be supported in all walks of life, so if there is a woman with less rights, women with more rights should be trying to lift the standards for her.

In Australia, I have seen a lot of "give more rights to the women who already have the most rights in the country" instead of "provide the same rights for women everywhere".

Film screenings have no impact on the poor - even the money (if donated) is usually swindled by morons.

For example. This was the first link to come up on my search for "international womens day" news on google. I duno how to screen shot on my laptop, but there was not a single article on a women of colour or disabled.

Sorry but that is just so negative. The point of cinema is not to give answers to issues in sociality, but to make people think about them, and to highlight things which you otherwise wouldn't be aware of. Maybe it is different in Australia, but as for the idea of the day itself? I don't see anything bad about it. I wish we didn't need such things, but the sad reality is that we probably do.

Im sorry (not sorry) but thats so narrow minded, how many actually view this cinema to be made aware of and how much comes of that? Anyone remember Kony?

There is a Mans day so why cant we have a womans day? I am not against the day, I am against those with the most rights fighting for more rights when there are plenty of women out there, in this country, and many more, who are beaten and raped on a daily basis, by men who do not see women as equal. That is more important to me than the gender pay gap, or the rights of men who now identify as women. I feel the focus is missed with the western world.

In Australia we still have a GST on sanitary items - this prices many poor and disabled women (ie on welfare) in a well off country OUT OF THE MARKET for sanitary items. That is ridiculous in this day and age. Minimum wage is not low, but price of living is high, with women encouraged to put their family and children first before their needs. (Ask any mother when the last time she got a new bra was).

There are countries without functioning toilets, or electricity, women are burning clothes to keep warm and cook food for their families. Basically house slaves there for the screwin'. But the #firstworldproblems are at the forefront.

Oh God, the wage gap is a myth. And @OccaQuokka did you see the whole Melbourne changing half it's traffic lights to red and green women? *facepalms*

That link you posted "Cutting penalty rates will affect women" Yuuup, just like it will affect men too. Like what the hell?

I do support the reproductive rights of the protest. I believe it's illegal to have an abortion in Queensland.

What does cinema have to do with International Women's Day? Seriously, I don't get this. Especially considering the woman who are the most hard done by won't be able to see these movies. To me it stinks of snobbery.

Cinema cures all. The cure for international women and UK kids that don't get outside and play enough.

Maybe that's why I've had such a run of bad luck. Not enough trips to the cinema has damaged me...
I don't get why film screenings have anything to do with International Women's Day. Most poor women in this city can't afford to have their heating on, nevermind a TV on, or trip to the cinema.
 
So people make money off these days like they do Christmas. I recall once that someone's life being destroyed over a joke in poor taste done over twitter was being facilitated by Google, because it was like the entire world was jumping in and Google wanted the ad revenues (as opposed to promoting cultural sensitivity or things like that). It doesn't surprise me.

'Course these days being exploited (just like Christmas) doesn't mean they're not without value in of themselves, just that it's easy for the actual purpose to get lost in all the grandstanding commercials about how you should spend your money over it.

Im not sure how I feel about that. #crapcook I'd go for, but a housewife is far, far more than cooking, I guess the population using it feel its in a joke form, but I still feel many of those house wives are more like house-elves.
