Ooh, what a delight to open up the thread this morning and see all these replies! Thank you all for your kind welcomes!! I'm really happy to be here, tee hee!
Ok so to respond (I want to respond everything so, sorry for the long post. I didn't want to do a whole bunch of individual posts):
For YummySushiPJs and Fuffy Baith who wondered what James' response was: James said (and I am paraphrasing here) "Are you serious? I worked on the set and you should've seen the badass female stunt doubles we got. I mean, these women were triple black belt! How are you going to tell me that's unrealistic??!" He said he was furious when he heard that from him, that obviously the guy didn't know what he was talking about, and that it angers him when people dismiss the show like that, especially for such an obnoxious reason. I forgot to mention that this crazy guy was an actor from Star Trek! James wouldn't say who, of course.
Secondly, I think it's great that your a Spike fan and you love his character development. That's the great thing about having a favorite character. Almost everyone here could make the case that their favorite character has the best development or story arc. There's no real answer and that's what makes Buffy such a great show, we all see and connect with each character differently. It makes for great discussions, even if we all don't agree we are still respectful of other's opinions....
Yes! I agree that everyone can certainly make a case for their favorite character. You should witness my husband and I's discussion on this matter--he's a HUGE Angel fan and sometimes I like to poke the bear by arguing how Spike has a better character growth than Angel. I just love to get a reaction from him, haha. But that's the thing, like you said, it's such a great show and we can all identify with a character (or more!) and they are so well-written, and dimensional, there's no "right" answer. But that's what's awesome: endless analysis and discussion. I cherish respectful debate... and if there was a right answer, what would be the fun in that? lol
...Clearly they have not seen the show or they would understand what a great person Buffy is (as well as other characters) and it's not because she's a woman. My roommate is like that and it really annoys me. He thought 'Innocence' was a stupid episode and hated the whole Angel turning into Angelus aspect. He refuses to watch it when it comes on T.V. So that's great that you have your husband to watch it with. Some people just don't know what good storytelling is I guess.
Hear, hear to that! I am sorry your roommate is like that. Soooo annoying, indeed! I feel lucky that my husband is passionate about it and that he dragged me down into his addiction with him, haha!
Also it's great that you're getting your Master's degree, congrats. Just curious as to why you chose Library and Information Science? I've seen that degree listed but never met anyone that has done it. And feel free to ask any one of us whatever Buffy related questions you have. This is such a great community and really the only place I go to, to talk Buffy.
Thank you! I chose Library and Information Science because I'd like to become an archivist. I currently work at a university archives and I absolutely love it. My undergraduate was in multicultural humanities and I have research interests in popular culture, so I am hoping to be able to work in a library/archive with popular culture collections (I am even looking into motion picture archiving, which is an emerging field). And glad I am able to ask questions here... I might post a thread soon and see what I get!
Welcome to BB 😀
Anyway I have a simple question for you...
Do you have a favorite ship (Spuffy,Bangel, Woz,...)?
Oh this one is actually hard, HAHA. I was really, really invested in Spuffy (no surprise there), but that doesn't mean I didn't like Bangel (I joke with my husband that I am only "Team Angel" because I want Spike to myself). But to be honest, I think if I had to pick a favorite, it would be Willow/Tara (what's the name for that ship?). I loved Woz too, and my heart broke with that one too, but Willow/Tara, oh **tears**. Always <3
...You certainly did miss out growing up but on the flip side to that you got to experience Buffy as an adult on your first viewing (hopefully spoiler free) and will therefore likely have a different take on it to most people.
Oh yes! I am still learning ways in how my latecomer perspective differs from others who were there from the beginning. It is quite interesting!
And yes, I watched totally spoiler free! My husband was very careful about that. He was impressed that I went on so many years completely unaware of anything that went on Buffy (he delighted in my reactions). I was hooked from the first season, but I think the moment where I just became obsessed with the show was in "Passion". Two words: Jenny Calendar. My world crumbled and I was never the same after that.
Beware of thetopher with pitchfork in hand and an angry mob carrying flaming torches behind him 😛
Uh-oh, has my Spike love gotten me in trouble already? LOL
😉
Anyone here about the woman who defended herself from muggers by copying moves she'd seen on Buffy?
It actually happened and gives lie to the 'fact' that women can't kick butt, and especially that its unrealistic that the women on Buffy can kick butt.
Oh, I hadn't heard of that. That is so awesome! Women FTW!!!
I'm...repressing my inner-angry villager so as not to scare the new folk. 😉
Besides, I like Spike sometimes...
Ohhhh hahaha I think there is some history here I should catch up on? LOL I love this board already!
...Glad you found BTVS & AtS eventually, they say better late than never.
Hear, hear!!!
Welcome to the boards!
So when are you joining Google? They hire more library science grads than any other company. Some medical research labs have libraries staffed by advanced degree holders in library science where they are expected to know where to find obscure items.
Oh, I actually didn't know that! That would be cool...I could use my Google bike around the Googleplex, LOL.
I'm having so much fun already! And by the way, I LOVE how these boards are designed and love the features. Some boards are a pain sometimes in terms of usability, but this one is so easy and smooth... to their defense, it's been quite a few years since I've used a fan board lol, but still...
