I find that in alot of buffys seasons, they typically take a while to get going. Not in terms of the episodes so much being bad,but more in terms of the seasons becoming full pieces as they went on and less self contained. Kinda slow moving. Season 7,Season 6 and season 5 fall into it. All of them with a memorable first episode then a kind of period of slow building.
But season 8 completely subverted that,I'd argue that with the exception of season 2,You had probably the best begining of any of the buffy seasons. From the long way home to time of your life it kept up the pace well. Everything that I heard about that had sounded bad like satsu and buffys storyline, even ended up well done. It gave birth to truthfully some of my favorite moments of the buffy universe. Commander Xander,Warrens reintroduction in which you see hes even more angry than he was before,Warren and amys relationship,Giles and faith as basically the avengers and Dracula saving the day.
But most importantly,to me,for the first time since season 6(which was the first time since the high school years)It FELT like buffy to me. And they masterfully weaved in everything from the previous seasons that worked.
Then...It went kinda downhill. I was patient. Predators and prey wasnt that bad,I enjoyed it for what it was. Harmony was hilarious but something was off..it felt lazy almost. then you have the retreat storyline which...eeeh. I loved oz's first reintroduction, his low key"Huh" and everything but then the story sort of forgot him. One of honestly my biggest buffy related disapointments.
But I still had interest based off of the whos twilight saga..Then well the revelation of twilight was both shocking and the resulting storyline felt like a character assassination and months later with the reintroduction of spike i've just felt kinda disapointed. I think they had such a strong begining that they must of ran out of ideas. But to be fair,I dont know if I could of done it better. I just feel slightly disapointed.
and by the way,I might be the only person, but i liked dawn as a midget and then as a giant. Its probably the only time ive ever liked dawn.
