How do you know the other world is better than this?

In the episode The Wish, right before Giles smashes Anyanka's amulet, Anyanka says/asks : "You fool. How do you know the other world is better than this?" And Giles was like "Because it has to be." For some reason, maybe with the music in the background, this seemed to me like a really sad moment. The way everything happened, with the wish and stuff, just made me reflect on every season of Buffy and comparing that quote the seasons. It really does fit. What if Buffy's world really is better than any other of the dimensions/worlds?

Wow, this really is an interesting question. I personally like this kind of 'what if' questions. In a way it goes in line with the Buffy episode, where she is in the lunatic asylum. In a way, we always have to take for granted that the dimension, universe and what else we are following in the Buffyverse is the right one, the just one and the one, which one should defend at all costs.

For instance lso in Doctor Who this dimensional sphere thingy occurs. It really is a sad thing, though I do believe that not all dimensions must be bad. It's just a very odd and difficult to grasp concept. I'll keep thinking more about it and see, what else I can come up with. It just really made me think 🙂
 
It's kind like the altering world's in The Butterfly Effect. In your mind and your heart you hope there's some place better. However, with the normal Buffy world it's the best possible world they have and know of. With all the bad and the fighting loss and heartbreak there's always that moment big or small of love and hope and trying to find your inner peace to see if you can finally rest since you've beaten all the bad. Thus hoping for a better world.
 
This same theme was used in "Angel" when the demon Skip gave Cordy an alternative life, and it turned out to be the wrong choice once more (Okay, that one was better for Cordy, but everyone else wound up in the meat grinder). They also seemed to be planting the seed of the same idea in Buffy's mind in the Buffy/Fray crossover. Hopefully, somehow, Buffy will learn from Cordy's experiences and try not to manipulate the way things are meant to be.
 
I always loved that moment for Giles. He's always been different from the rest of the Watchers' Council, he's willing to believe in hope and a better world, whereas they are all about damage limitation. To be honest, the real revelation in The Gift is not "What would Sunnydale be like without Buffy", it's "what would Buffy be like without Giles". It's nice to see that although she lost a lot, he was still the same man.

I always thought 'what difference does it make" because as soon as he smashed the amulet he would cease to be; it's not like he would know one way or another, nor even care. He would have never existed to begin with. Forget about Oppenheimer, Giles is the destroyer of worlds.

To be fair, he is restoring the old world, so it balances out.

No. Because as soon as the wish was made the old world never was. He was simply restoring Cordy's reality.

Isn't it? It makes me wanna cry, i mean just the whole episode and thinking about life. What if we have possibly have another world, and ours is the worst of the two? Or what if it would be the better? Thinks like this leave you speechless and wondering.
 
It is hard to wrap your head around. Just trying to imagine the extent of our dimension is hard enough, now imagine others. It makes you feel kind of small. That Wish thing always bugged me. It was still there in Dopplegangland so did Giles really get rid of it? Or just send Cordy back?
 
I think that Giles' statement that the reality he was restoring "has to be" better than the one he currently inhabits is more desperation than assurance. He had obviously, since coming to Sunnydale, seen the rise to power of the Master ind its resultant death, destruction, and mayhem. He had met the Buffy of his reality and was obviously underwhelmed with her. Anything would be better.

He got rid of it; but time is not linear so that is why they could have gotten the amulet (or gay vamp) back because they were still there in time.
 
As far as the alternate dimension thing, both realities exist. Physicists have been working with this theory for awhile. For every decision made, whatever you decide, an alternate you in an alternate dimension makes the opposite choice. There are billions of dimensions in which things can get very, very different. Both the Wishverse and the Buffyverse exist, side-by-side, on separate planes of existence. All Anya did was chunk Cordy into the reality in which Joyce decided to move to Cleveland instead of Sunnydale. Giles destroying Anya's amulet really did nothing to the Wishverse; it merely took away Anya's power to shift between realities and threw her--and, coincidentally, Cordy--back into the Buffyverse. Depressing as it is, the Giles in Wishverse Sunnydale didn't see the results of his actions.

No no.. Momma, that is incorrect. It was not an alternate dimension. It was the result of a spell; like anything else when the spell was broke, the 'reality' was broke as well. Cordy was not whisked away to an alternate dimension, or there would have been an ALTERNATE Cordy there as well. Her dimension was simply altered.
 
Result of a spell or not, it obviously exists. And a Cordy obviously existed there already, or nobody would know her. Our Cordy replaced the old Cordy, hence everyone's confusion at her behavior.

For the most part, a lot of what happens in the Buffyverse can be explained through regular physics, even the magic. So can this.

Existed. And our Cordy replaced no one, the wishverse people replace our people. Otherwise, Bear, if Cordy was simply plucked from one and placed into a different, when she returned to the original she would have remembered. But when Giles broke the spell the 'different' one ceased to be, as did Cordy's memories of it.

Of course it would have; because it was a moment in time. It was no longer part of time, but it still was in time. All the Doppelgangland spell did was pull an object out of that timespan.
