How do you react when you meet a celebrity ?

There was one time I did not speak to a celebrity out of deference to her. Sally Ride was the first female astronaut in the US (Valentina Terechkova was the first female in space) and she was a payload operator who had to use the Shuttle Arm we manufactured at Spar Aerospace. If she hadn't had her spacesuit on, I wouldn't have recognized her. She was just behind me in the cafeteria line but I didn't say anything to her. She was my candidate for the invisible woman. She was fit (obviously) but just seemed to blend into the ambient. She could have been a convincing Marcie Cross. Someone who has the misfortune to be the payload operator of the Space Shuttle has to be patient and longsuffering. We saw other astronauts who seemed to have been sent by Central Casting from "The Right Stuff" - loud, swaggering know-it-alls who were accurately depicted in the movie. Sally was the opposite - quiet, patient, longsuffering. And if you operated the shuttle arm, you were suffering. There are mechanical things and tools you use with a satisfactory feel - a good ratchet wrench or a drill press / (pillar drill in the UK). The arm was the opposite - it could bend, so you had to be careful. There was no anchor point, as the load moves one was, the spacecraft moves the other way. The controls are awkward and don't have the right "feel" to them. Patience is necessary and she had it.

BTW Sally was married to a guy for a while but later came out as gay and lived with her female companion for the rest of her life, a bit like Willow.

If I met Tom Lenk I think I'd cry. The closest I've ever come to meeting a celebrity was the day I met a long-term internet friend from Seattle (he flew over to London for a week to spend time with me.) I ended up collapsing in tears and hugging him and shivering in fear every day. It was horrible.
 
I react pretty awkwardly... I saw Amy Acker at a mall near my house, who I'm a huge fan of, and my sister and I followed her around for like five minutes :/ I don't know if she noticed us or not. Anyway eventually my sister got sick of my shyness and went up to her and told her we were huge fans of Angel. She was super nice and sweet and pretty!!! and we asked if we could have a picture and she said yes. I wanted to go in for a hug but since it wasn't a convention I didn't (also she had her kids with her), I just said again that I was a huge fan and left. After I realized I forgot to tell her I also love her in Person of Interest and especially Dollhouse but oh well.

I also met Amber Benson at a book signing, and again was awkward. I didn't really know what to say but she told me and a friend she liked our names and asked if we wanted pictures, which of course we did!

In general I think an issue I have is not saying enough because I don't want to make them uncomfortable, but then I realize they probably wouldn't mind hearing why I'm a fan for like a minute haha.

I met Weird Al Yankovic at a record signing, appropriately enough on Halloween in 1998. I told him, "You are the future of rock and roll." He gave that nervous laugh and signed the cassette. I was considered weird by Weird Al! That's got to mean something.
