Had Buffy and Joyce not gotten attacked by one of Angel's minions in "Becoming, Part 2" how long do you think Buffy could have kept her secret life from Joyce?

Judging from what Buffy asked Joyce right after that attack about, "How many times have you washed blood out of my clothes without wondering where it came from?" I would say that Joyce was pretty well oblivious to how her daughter was spending her evenings, so it's a safe bet that it could have gone on indefinitely, unless something as graphic as that vampire attack awakened her to what was really going on.

It's not so much about Buffy keeping her secret ID from her Mom- she seemed fairly bad at that, but more Joyce's ability to shrug off weird happenings.

Repression was Joyce's super-power so I think she could've held off 'discovering' almost indefinately.

How about 'Dead Man's Party'? Legion of zombies attacking the house because of her art? That would've been tough to wave away.
Maybe 'Band Candy'? That might've been too much even for Joyce to deny because she acted way out of character and slept with a way out of character Giles.

Or 'Gingerbread', then agasin Willow's mom suppressed that

Or perhaps one of those times where Joyce was clearly in danger in her own home, like when Faith held her hostage?

It's tough to say. thetopher and white avenger make good points.

I feel like as the seasons go on there would be some event (or culmination of events) where she would piece together that something was definitely up. She may not have a single clue as to who Buffy is or how she always keeps confronting these evils, but I think the conversation would be had at some point.

However, if it didn't come up before Buffy moved away after high school, maybe it never would have.
