How old were you when you started watching???

Hi, just wondering what age you started watching BTVS + Angel and what you think is the right age to start watching:

I was about 9/10 when I started and it was from season 1 ep 1 yes I have been there from the beggining and watched all the way from S1-S7, I'm 23 now and have been a loyal fan for quite some time, so I was wondering if I should dig my boxsets out and let my cousin watch it - she's a mature 7 year old but I really don't think she could handle the darker seasons (S5,S6,S7) soooo could you please give me your verdict - she seems to like Vampire Diaries but that is obviously no where near as good as BTVS though I don't think that she's ready for Angel yet...So my question is bassically, do you think that it is suitable for her and would she enjoy it or find it too twilight-ish as she loves the twilight saga (for some bizzare reason)...please tell me what you think because she has discovered my buffy room and is intrested to see why I love it so much...Thanks 🙂

I was watching horror movies and other violent movies and TV shows for as long as I can remember, but that was back in the "50's, so the violence and action wasn't nearly as graphic then as they are now, and, without any sort of rating system at that time, it was totally up to my parents what I was allowed to watch and what I couldn't watch. I think that that was a much better method than any arbitrary rating system devised as a one size fits all package.

If you aren't sure whether or not your child should be allowed to watch this or any other movie or TV program, then they probably shouldn't be. You know her far better than anyone here or anywhere else. When you feel comfortable with the situation, your instincts will almost certainly be right. Just be sure that she knows the difference between movie violence and special effects and the real thing, and that she can differentiate between the two. If she can do that, then there won't be any problems.

And I was 55 when I saw my first episode ("Once More With Feeling" in its first showing) Luckily, I started watching at that point, so I was never warped by the myth of Bangel. Spuffy is the only TRUE ship for Buffy.
 
I was probably around 15 when I first started watching Buffy. I can remember it loosely paralleling my own high school timeline as I watched it. I never saw it on T.V., just the DVDs. I really, really liked it at the time but it wasn't until my most recent re-watch about a year and a half ago that I really loved it.

Well, except for that, you know, whole canon thing where it's pretty established that it isn't.

Don't get me wrong. Spuffy is great, I'll be the first to admit that (except for that whole "you came back broken" thing. I really, truly do not understand how people, even those who are die-hard fans of the relationship, find that romantic or appealing. It's creepy), especially in S7, and I love Spike, but it is clearly not portrayed as a...you know what? It doesn't matter. I'll just be hitting a wall 🙄
 
I was 25 lol meaning I watched both shows on Netflix last summer. Idk, I would think that the show is definitely meant for a little older crowds. Like teenage at youngest. You wanna be old enough to understand the different situations and subtexts.
 
I was about 9. I used to watch it on Thursday evenings 6.45 on BBC2 after The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, unless I had karate then I'd timer record it on VHS 😛. But sometimes the timer recording didn't work, so I'd come home dissappointed haha. I started properly watching that timeslot mid Season 3 til early S5, but then circumstances changed and I wasn't available to see it every Thursday.

I used to re-watch the recordings I had off the TV, then I decided to ask for the whole series on VHS when I was about 12 or 13 for a birthday present. I got S1-7 all on video (used btw) from some guy on eBay, my mum bought it for me 🙂 I watched all the episodes chronologically, I was in heaven! 🙂

Then maybe a year later, perhaps two so I was 14 or 15, my mum bought me S1-4 VHS boxsets of Angel from some guy on eBay (again used) and I loved it, particularly Season 2 onwards.

I still haven't seen all of Angel Season 5 yet, just the first 7 episodes or something. I could never get easy access to them when I was younger. Even though I could easily sit down and watch it right now, I think I'll watch it properly for the first time in a few years, I have no desperate urge to watch it at the moment 🙂 I think I like the idea that there's a bit of the Buffyverse on TV that's still a mystery to me. Weird huh 😛

It's up to you when you let your cousin watch, she may enjoy Buffy, but she'll only get certain jokes if she rewatches it when she's older. I wouldn't show her Angel yet, it's a little darker in it's whole tone.

I was around 12. I remember my friend wanting to make me watch her favorite TV show. I ended up beign more obsessed with it than her XD
 
I think I might have been around 10 or 11. I can't really remember but I do remember my friend and I both having matching Buffy bags in our last year of primary school and dressing up as her for a fancy dress thing, so I was at least around 10 or 11. If I started watching before that then I just can't remember! I can't pinpoint the exact time.

As for a seven year old watching it... I think I'd be wary, especially when it comes to the later seasons. Maybe try her out on a couple of the first episodes and see how she goes? I can't remember how old they were at the time, but I remember trying to get my younger cousins to watch when we were little and terrifying them so I'd be careful!
 
I was 14 in, December, 2008. So my parents were going through this 'we need to monitor what she is watching phase' (they wouldn't let me see the dark knight, so I had to sneak out to watch it, grr) and so, my dad and I were in the local library and there is this rule that if you want to borrow a DVD, you have to be 15. My older sister had seen BTVS and she liked it, so I picked up the first season, and asked my dad. He was like checking if it was suitable for like ages, but agreed and I was so happy! Finished the show November, 2011, bought the complete collection December, 2012. Those are my two fun stories.

ATS: I watched the first season in 2011, when I was 17. I finished the whole show December last year. Bought the complete collection December, 2012.

I can't give you advice on suitability, but perhaps an alternative could be when she's 9 or 10, slightly older, if you're not sure. Like White Avenger says, you know her better than us 🙂
 
I was about 13/14 when I started watching it, it was when it first aired in the 90's 🙂 I don't know what age would be best to start watching it, I think it depends on the person, some younger kids don't mind the horror stuff, yet some hate it. I have a teenage nephew that still has nightmares from certain horror things, yet his brother is fine with them :S
 
I must have been around 10 when I first watched it, because the serie had just ended but s5 of Angel was still on, so must have been in 2002-3. I started watching Angel when I was around the same age since my dad had the DVDs for s1-2. It took me longer to finish Angel though because I had to buy the DVDs since they weren't playing the episodes on TV. At that point Buffy aired everyday so it took me less then a year to see the whole serie and I went on to watch it every single day until I was about 17.

As for a 7yo watching, I think s1-4/5 may be appropriate depending on the kid. My dad was letting me watch horror movies like Blair Witch Project at that time because I never got scared easily and I was pretty mature for my age. The ick is that you almost have to be present because with adult shows like that , the kid may have question about some of the topic and it's better to be able to explain it yourself. I think sometimes kids are too sheltered now a days. I knew what sex was when I was probably 5, so if a scene came on TV, my parents could explain to me what it was and what it meant. If your cousin is not ready to know some of those adult related things, she's probably not ready to watch Buffy unless you can explain it to her. Violence is another problem but if you're there to answer questions I don't see a problem with the early seasons. Just make sure she doesn't watch it alone.

Also, Keep in mind that she may not enjoy the serie as she may not get every subtlety of it at 7. Also, because she is your cousin, you may want to ask her parents and they can make the decision for you.
 
I started watching when I was 13 I think. Back then s6 was just airing for the first time in Germany. I watched s6 and s7 then, though I didn't watch most of the remaining episodes until I was 17/18. Between that time, I read a lot of the Buffy books though, so I was already familiar with the older characters as well.
 
I watched the first eight episodes when I was 18, but didn't really watch the show until I was 20. A little late to the party, I know.
 
I was 11 when I first heard of Buffy and saw part of "Witch" (Season 1, Ep. 3). I was hooked immediately. 🙂
 
I watched it since the first time it aired, I remember I was in 4th grade (so like 10ish) and I was at a friends house when it came on for the first time.
 
I was 16. 🙂 I started watching the show because a television network I watched religiously every day started airing the first three seasons
 
I was 20 when I started watching it. I never saw it as it aired on The WB/UPN, unfortunately, simply because my town didn't get those channels. But thankfully, I finally did get to see it on DVD. Thank god for DVD. 🙂
 
I saw the movie first, I think when it came out, so I must've been around 26. For a long time after the tv show started, I had little interest because it didn't resemble the movie, looked like a soap opera, and I was turned off by the rabidness of the fans. I also didn't have a tv for a long time.

I think I saw a few episodes of season 6 at some point, was interested, but was confused by all the history and plot points I didn't know (friends tried to explain it to me, "wait, she died and came back? Twice? What?" etc) that it ended up sounding too convoluted for me to want to spend the time catching up on.

Eventually, I got a good home audio/visual setup, and rented some of season 1, around 2010 or 2011 when I was 46 or so. I discovered I liked it, and decided I wanted to watch the whole thing so I could understand the whole "mythos" as well as enjoy a good show. Now I'm a big fan, so much so that my girlfriend used to tease me constantly, saying "What's so great about Buffy? Do you think she's hot? I bet you want to have sex with Buffy, don't you??"

There's a few other shows of similar vintage I wanted to watch all of, but one only has so much time, you know? I've watched Sex and the City, the first season of Angel, and want to watch all the Xena episodes (straight man here who loves strong female archetypes 🙂 ). I'd like to watch all of Whedon's stuff at some point.

I also want to watch all the extras and listen to all the commentaries, and I've only done that with a few Buffy seasons, and I refuse to continue watching Angel until I'm finished with all of that in Buffy. Crazy, huh?

Maybe if I retire or am unemployed for a long period. 🙂

I think I was 15 or 16 and I was in 10th grade. That was shortly after I started watching How I Met Your Mother which introduced me to Alyson Hannigan.
 
I caught some of the last season of Buffy and I was [ahem] 32 at the time. I got back into it about 3 years ago and joined this forum (now I'm a fanatic lol). I do let me kids watch Buffy and Angel, although I'm particular and sometimes skip scenes & entire episodes (they're 6, 9, and 12 right now). My youngest used to say "Is that Buppy?" when I first started watching again lol. Then again, the kids and I watch other things together that are supernatural/sci-fi: Grimm, Arrow, Once Upon A Time, Doctor Who, superhero movies, Star Wars etc. I know them and what they can and cannot handle. No, the 6 year old isn't getting all the subtext and background, but that doesn't mean he can't enjoy it and pick up on that later.
