I'm at high school and it's got to the point where I've got so close to Buffy that when some, ungrateful, stupid son of a vamp insults Buffy, I feel pain as though they were insulting me. And it makes me furious, they don't understand Buffy, they've probably not even watched it, yet they criticize. This makes me furious. Does anyone else go through this? And how do you deal?

I can almost guarantee that they've never watch it, and that they're Twilight fans. Not to create another messed up debate around the Twilight and such fandoms, but this is usually the crowd that bushes Buffy, from experience. Don't worry, they don't know what they're missing. They're convinced that their shows (the ones that are super popular right now) are the best, because that's what everybody else likes. You're like a fish outside the water, because Buffy is not as popular, and it makes people ignore it's awesomeness.

(This is my opinion based on experience, I know what I'm saying here).

To assume they're Twilight fans is kinda prejudiced... But I agree that they've probably never watched it.
Don't take it so personally. People aren't always going to like what you love. Learn to be okay with that and accept their feedback as what it is, just an opinion. They have as much right to dislike it and voice their dislike as you do to like and voice your like. Walk away, get perspective, and move forward 🙂

I was just thinking of a way to say that, but you put it perfectly
arabella, I think that when it comes to Buffy, opinions don't exist. I simply don't see how you can dislike Buffy. And I know I'm being single-minded here, but it's true. Buffy's too awesome to not like.

I've never heard anyone bash Buffy - but then again I never heard anyone talk about it either. I found the show on my own while passing through channels and then got hooked.

I did know the show existed - and that it was pretty popular in its day.

There are always going to be people who hate, criticize and judge things. Ignore them, let them be negative. Why sink to their level?

Well you got two options, ignore or confront. And I don't mean start bashing the sh*% out of people, but actually start up a conversation. Why they think its crap, have they actually watched it, if Twilight is in fact the reason..

But other than that, everyones entitled to opinions. I haven't really come across any haters, but as a newish fan, I think I'd be pissed as well. Can't help these things.

The only people I've ever met in person who are Buffy fans were at Christian Kane concerts lol. I have a couple of close friends who are hooked on Twilight but are unwilling to give Buffy, Angel or even Vampire Diaries a chance because they are tv shows and "they don't have the time." Like someone said above, their loss.

Here's what you do: ask them why they don't like it. While not everyone is as enthusiastic as we are about it, most people I've ever met who have seen the show acknowledge that it is good and if they aren't fans, they admit that they didn't give it enough of a chance to get into it. I've found that often, if someone says they completely hate it, they haven't seen more than one episode or so. And if that's the case, why feel insulted? They're the ones who should be embarrassed for judging it with so little information!

And if you meet someone who genuinely dislikes the show and can give you some really specific, well-thought out reasons why, I think you just have to respect that! (But don't worry, as I've said, these people tend to be in the minority!)

My mom doesn't like the show because she says it's too depressing.

Well put. While i have asked why, my mom says she likes Angel but can't watch Buffy, for some strange reason that i can't have revealed to me
Yea, you got two choices... Either you ask them if they actually watched it, and try to show them how stupid it is to judge something without even knowing it(tough one lol), or you just ignore them.

I usually do the latter, unless I feel like that person in particular could be turned into a Buffy maniaaaaaaac. Then I will use devious tactics to get them into it. 😛 😉

Have an intelligent argument about it. Chances are you won't be able to convince them otherwise, but it's hell of a lot of fun to debate about it your favourite show with others.

How does not liking BUFFY make anyone "ungrateful?" You seem to have a very childish attitude about this. You basically seem like, 'THEM NO LIKE BUFFY, THEM BAD!' Which is a very unfair reaction. Three words. Let. It. Go. They probably wouldn't care anyway. It all comes down to differing tastes. BUFFY is not perfect by any means. There are many things wrong with it, things that we might be able to overlook, when others can't. It's all a matter of perception.

Well I think you first have to ask them why they don't like it and then you can try to convince them with things like great character development and so on. And if this doesn't work and they still hate BTVS after your discussion, let them hate it they miss something! Poor people 😀. No really, you can't judge others just becasue they don't like Buffy. Even if this is really sad most of them are still nice guys. Try to get a little distance from Buffy and everything, Buffy is the best tv show ever in my eyes but not to good to judge people just because they don't like the show. But nothing stands against a nice discussion if you know what I mean!

It's easy to get very attatched to a show and personally I have no problem understanding the feelings you have about Buffy. I'm curious though, how and when exactly are they insulting Buffy?

I simply don't see how you can dislike Buffy. And I know I'm being single-minded here, but it's true. Buffy's too awesome to not like.
I understand your feelings but being single-minded while claiming something to be true? Rarely they go together. It's true for you obsiously. But in a bigger perspective you can't expect everyone to see things your way.

Well you got two options, ignore or confront. And I don't mean start bashing the sh*% out of people, but actually start up a conversation. Why they think its crap, have they actually watched it, if Twilight is in fact the reason..
I'd love to see this work. Give it a try.

Sadly fantatic fans have a tendency to think that being loud is way more important than logic. Which is the case no matter what or who you're a fan of. Not that I'm sure the people you talk about are fanatic like that. That's the reason of my first question above.

I've never had to deal with hateful fans. I've met some that don't love the show but they've never been bashing it. I'm also a pretty calm person, at least when it comes to interacting with others.

What you may need is ways to deal with your feelings? Not make it specificly about Buffy. We all have agressions inside and we deal with them differently. Some in a good way and some in a less good way. There's not 1 solution that work for everyone. You just need to try and find what fits you best.

No really, you can't judge others just becasue they don't like Buffy. Even if this is really sad most of them are still nice guys. Try to get a little distance from Buffy and everything, Buffy is the best tv show ever in my eyes but not to good to judge people just because they don't like the show.

Sadly we judge people all the time. I do it too. Not that we should. So every time you manage, feel good about yourself.

I've experienced this with a lot of things I'm interested in. People will bash Iron Maiden when they know nothing of them or have never listened to them, just because they think it will make me angry.

So here's my advice: Don't feed the trolls. Just brush it off and move on, no need to give attention to some ignorant person who is only trying to make you angry. Don't even try to explain to them why you like it, because their closed minds do not care.

Haha reminds me of when I first became a vegetarian...when we had to dissect frogs, all of the guys were betting that I'd puke. I tore that baby to bits ;)
I don't think iv'e heard anyone say anything bad about Buffy or Angel to be honest, having said that it's not really a question i go around asking people lol.

Iv'e often found that when it comes to a t.v show and some people hate it, i enjoy it that little bit more the next time i watch it.

I went through this my entire high school career. It was infuriating for people to make fun of me for loving the show, and to make fun of it, because 99.9% of the time, they had never even watched it.
Sometimes, you just have to learn to laugh with them and let it roll off your back because for some people, if they see it gets to you, they'll just do it more. My best defense was just to ignore people when they started in on the show.

I hardly ever hear someone talking about Buffy. I mean, it finished almost 9 years ago...only us fanatics still talk about it 🙂
