How to Watch Season 7

There's a quote by Joss Whedon that in my opinion isn't quoted enough. Here it is:

Q: How would you explain the message to fans who didn't understand season seven?

Joss: Watch it again when it comes out on DVD. I think not understanding it would be the worst, because it's almost didactic in its clarity.

Just in case it isn't immediately clear what Joss is saying, here's a definition of didactic.

didactic

Fitted or intended to teach; conveying instruction; preceptive; instructive

To me this says the instuctions on what is going on in Season 7 are in the text, and they are clear. You can infer more from them, such as moral lessons, but basically the information given is what you use.

I think if you look at S-7 that way a lot of stuff that didn't make sense, all of a sudden does.

For example when the characters continually say and speak as if Buffy has been re-inserted in the slayer line so that it now passes through her, it's because it has.

When Anya and Giles come to the conclusion in Showtime this was caused by bringing Buffy back mystically from the dead in Bargaining 1 that's what happened.

When the first Turok-han we see appears to be more powerful than the Turok-hans of Chosen, it's because it was.

Here's how the reasoning goes in that particular case.

If summoning the first Turok-han requires a special mystic ceremony, with a special ceremonial knife and symbols, it's logical to infer from this that the magic done here is what gives the First Turok-han it's special power.

It goes like this. Joss Whedon tells us everything we need to find an explanation is in the text. The first ubie is superior to the ones that follow. The only difference we see between ubie # 1 and the others is the mystical ceremony required to summon him. Conclusion: That's why it is more powerful than the others.

You can apply that kind of logic sequence to any question you have about Season 7.

Example:

How does Buffy know where to look for the Guardians' temple?

* Buffy tells us in a conversation with Spike, she knows the temple is on unconsecrated ground. We never see how this information comes to Buffy.

Infer from that: The information was delivered off-screen.

Also infer: Information concerning on-screen events is sometimes discovered by the characters through study off-screen.

* Buffy spends a lot of time in cemetaries.

Infer from that: Buffy knows the layout of those cemetaries.

* Some cemetaries are on consecrated ground.

Infer from that: The area outside such a cemetary would be unconsecrated.

* Buffy walks through a cemetary, out a gate, and up to what looks like a crypt outside of the cemetary grounds.

Conclusions from all this: Buffy has gone from consecrated ground to unconsecrated ground. She was looking for a cemetary on consecrated ground with a crypt outside of it. This was decided off-screen as a result of study. She knew where to look because she's hung around in a lot of cemetaries.

So you see what I mean right?

The answers to all these questions people have concerning things that don't seem to make sense in Season 7 actually have answers embedded in the text. You just have to accept the answers are there, and look for them.

Joss tells us that's the way we're supposed to watch Season 7.

In fact challenge me on this if you like. Show me something that doesn't seem to make sense in S 7, and I bet I can show you how it does.

I definetly believe everything can be explained, it can also be explained in many different ways, which can be interesting, and maybe all of them are "false" except one, or maybe there are no real "truth", doesn't really matter to me, still interesting though.

About the uber vamps, I heard Joss saying that's just cause the first one needed to be really strong and the others needed to be weaker, cause it wouldn't work in the show otherwise. That works for me, I don't need more explanation than that but if you wanna explain that's fine by me, and Joss might agree with your explanation, I do not know.

Seriously re-watching Season 7 cleared up a lot for me. You make great points as usual N4H. After re-watching Season 7 is now my favorite.

Was this on the DVD, or can you give me a link? I missed that one. 🙂

Sometimes how I watch Season 7 is with my eyes closed.

We still do not know how the line jumped from Faith to Buffy once again, which is one of the biggest things about the series for me. Even though this might not have occured in Season 7, I still think it should have been addressed.

Although I do believe the Buffy is the TRUE slayer for obvious reasons: Her power and skill are unmatched and she was the one slayer destined to find the scythe, and that is saying something.

I also want to know who put the friggin' talisman in the bathroom in Lessons. Another unexplained incident.

But I just wish in Season 7 we could have got some glimpse about the events that lead to Fray. Because it looks like we may never know, with the exception of comics and such, with some of the cast not wanting to come back for more.

<playful>Hmmm...school on a hellmouth...who (or what) could've put the talisman in the bathroom?

Maybe Andrew & Johnathan brought it back from Meh-hee-co?

Well ya there's a lot of S-7 stuff like the talisman that you'd like them to go into more detail on. I wish they'd fleshed out the reasoning on why Annabelle ran from the Summer's house.

The point I was trying to make though is that S-7 still makes sense based on the text given.

We don't know who exactly put the talisman in the bathroom, but based on stuff we saw in S-7. Bringers, Demon confederates such as the one Ashanti played, magically cohersed humans such as the cops who attacked Faith; any of these could have placed the talisman in the background.

The Annabelle one is interesting too. If you rewind and rerun the part in BOTN where Annabelle is telling Molly there "safe as houses" with the slayer, you'll notice there's a slight expression of doubt on her face, and I believe she ends the sentence with, "aren't we?" or something like that.

Yeah and Chloe...I would have liked to hear her conversation with the first and how it got her to kill herself...she seemed strong willed at first...guess not.

I think Annabelle was in the sort of mood like Faith in Faith, Hope & Trick: She put on the front that she was confident, but yet inside she was afraid.

Because really what teenage girl wouldn't be afraid of a uber-vamp that easily took down the super slayer? Well with the exception of Kennedy, but this is just one of the many reasons why I hate her.

Ya know thinking back to the Talisman, could it have not been Principal Wood? We were certainly lead to believe that in the beginning of Season 7. Maybe this was just one of his tests to find out if Buffy was the slayer (though I think his council contacts could have verified this, another untouched subject).

Actually..now that you bring it up...why wasn't Giles informed about Nikki Wood's son....he acted like he had no clue she had a son.

The only way that could have been done if her watcher had some sort of Buffy-Giles relationship and kept it out of the books and or it happened during her pre-calling days.

Because I would imagine it to be quite tedious to be pregnant and patrol. Sort of impossible, unless the slayer powers went all "Charmed" and protected her child.

Ahh, Chloe. Funny you should mention that. I just watched Showtime.

Here's a collection of Chloe bits from Showtime. You tell me if it's unreasonable to suspect that this character is a possible weak link that could be exploited:

BLONDE SLAYER-IN-TRAINING
Spike? Sorry, I'm confused. He's that vampire who's been killing people, right? He's the one you're worried about helping?

BUFFY
(stammering) Well, we need him to"”he's the one that's been"”it's complicated, Chloe.

BRUNETTE SLAYER-IN-TRAINING / CHLOE
I'm Chloe, she's Eve.

*

KENNEDY
We have to be ready. If something comes down"”

CHLOE
No, something's already come down.

*

EVE
Like any of this does. No matter how many there are, one of us is gonna be the next slayer, with the weight of the world on her shoulders.

CHLOE
(shakes her head) It won't be me. I mean, not now. I mean, I'm too young.

*

MOLLY
How can you say that? It was here, Buffy, in the house, living with us for days.

CHLOE
And you didn't even know it.

*

BUFFY
Xander, we don't have a lot of choices.

CHLOE
And what if that doesn't work? What if that monster gets through?

*

MOLLY
Buffy, you fought the Turok-Han, and it almost killed you.

CHLOE
And you're the real slayer.

*

CHLOE
Give up. Can we do that? Surrender, I mean, so it won't kill us.

*

VI (O.S.)
Fighting's one thing. Winning's another.

CHLOE (O.S.)
I don't want to die

*

RONA
(under her breath) Some leader.

CHLOE
This is crazy.

*

CHLOE
(staring at the Turok-Han) Oh no no no no...

Is it possible or even unlikely that this weakling character didn't get the lesson of confidence Buffy was trying to teach the potentials in Showtime?

Also there's an inference in Get it Done that drill sergeant Kenney's "maggot" comment may have affected Chloe's confidence in herself.

I thought it was, am I wrong? I watched Chosen with commentaries a week ago or something and I really thought I heard Joss say this, no?

Did he? or was he just surprised that Principal Wood was her son. Here's the text:

ROBIN
As a matter of fact, I was raised by a Watcher.

GILES
You were?

ROBIN
Bernard Crowley. Took me in when I was a young kid, trained me.

GILES
Crowley. I remember the name. New York based watcher. Resigned shortly after his slayer was"” (looks at Robin carefully) You're Nikki Wood's son.

Eponinethen: I don't have the DVD. Damn...

I dunno...he knew Nikki WOOD had a son...he knew that the principal's last name was WOOD...and that Buffy thought he had some kind of supernatural connection...

Hehe, agree, you could really think he should have suspected..
(Not allowed to give you rep.)

It's ok...it's the thought that counts :)

I'm not sure I understand. Are you asking, "why wasn't Giles informed about Nikki Wood's son?" or why didn't Giles figure out that PW was her son before Wood told him he was raised by a watcher?

Because I think Giles did know Nikki Woods had a son. I have to watch it again to see if there's something hidden in the nuances of the actors that contradicts that, but the text seems to suggest Giles knew Nikki had a son.

The information was buried in the clutter of trivial information that was the brain of Giles though. He just didn't make the connection until Wood presented the pieces that needed to be put together. That's the way I saw it, anyway.

That is also the impression I had received, while watching "LMPTM".
