How Was Your Day?

Went to a Caribbean birthday party with my girlfriend (who is from Trinidad) and met a lot of her friends. A lot of people from Trinidad are originally from India so as well as Soca and Calypso music, there was a lot of Chutney music. I was quite the attention-getter as the only white guy at the party, so I made sure my dance steps wowed them. There were a lot of Guyanese people there, so it was not the usual Caribbean food - they use curry in a lot of places where it doesn't belong like in pelori which is small fried bread balls. I had to try their hot sauce and aside from the taste like jerk seasoning (blech - tastes like used sweat socks) it wasn't as hot as I thought it would be. It was interesting to see what another culture does and the birthday boy had turned 80 that day.

sounds really cool
Took the bus to run errands. I actually enjoyed it a lot! It was sunny but cool, and it took my mind off a lot of things.

Tomorrow I'm having truck towed to a mechanic. It can't sit out there on the street forever, so away it goes. Off to the mechanic my parents paid thousands to btw. I told him AAA said it wasn't the battery, blah blah blah. Mechanic said if it WAS the battery he'd put a new one in for $300 (parts and labor)

My ulterior motive is to to just leave it there IF he says it's the alternator or whatever... I'll just tell him I can't afford anything over $300 for a short while. He'll store it there for a week or two...I'm just sick of my truck sitting out on the street.

Was talking to one of the other ladies in ministry this morning who lives in another small town. Her town doesnt even have a pub or proper post office. Before she went on holidays there were dozens of empty blocks of land for sale (half acre size), some that had been for sale for years (under $80,000), when she came back, they had all sold. She even had a knock on the door and offer on her home. Her neighbours house sold in less than 4 days. The real estate market is more crazy than I could ever had imagined. Maybe, my neighbours next door will get the half a million they are asking for!

World seems a bit wild to me right now. The city was crazy busy, internal migration up 200% according to the news. Its going to be a nightmare getting around down there for the next decade or so, the roads and infrastructure wasnt enough for the population already there! They've reduced the speed limits on the highway too, so its added longer to my drive. Im soooo thankful for grocery delivery!

Pizza does not yet deliver here, but I grabbed pizza hut on the way home. Way better than dominoes! And cheaper than maccas. I'll be going back again for sure.

There's a man outside screaming obscenities at the top of his lungs. He lives in his car, which is parked across the street. This happens occasionally. Its not that big a deal to me, the guy is homeless and obviously miserable. Unlike my neighbours, I'd NEVER call the police for something like this. "There but for the grace of God go I." People should always remember that phrase when they encounter the less fortunate.

Heard about bootscooting/line-dancing happening in a town near by. I thought that sounds like it would be a lot of fun! Finally found some info online for it and its $12!!! I know the hall hire fee is not high and then all they need to do is play music for an hour. How can they justify $12 for that?!? Golf is $5 including club hire, and the bootscooting wants $12!?!? I can drive the dogs down to the coast and have a coffee and croissant in a cafe on the waterfront for $13.50. $12 for one hour really seems excessive. $6 I would do, $12, no chance!

My usual weekly dance expenditures are $15 for Monday night at Miss Bachata, no cover at all for Wednesday at Lago's and $25 on Friday at the Capitol but they also serve dinner. At the Capitol, they usually have 3 or 4 line dances and the rest of the night is Latin, rock and a few waltses. Worth the money. But $12 per hour? Not at all realistic.

I woke up an hour ago and the clock on the wall indicated it was 1:30. So I figured I'd just stay up...but it turns out the clock's battery had died and it was actually 5:30. So now it's near dawn instead of closer to midnight. That threw me for a few minutes.

Time is a social construct. After all, if gender is a social construct, what isn't?

Hmmm. Since we're actually living in The Matrix, I suppose it doesn't matter. None of this is real...which means you're a figment of my imagination. 😋

In other news, the weather here is just brutal. My God, it's hotter than a meth pipe on payday! And since my truck is in the shop, I definitely WON'T be going anywhere.

One thing that happened last night was, I had picked up my son=in-law from work and we were heading down the street when a driver pulled up beside us and said "Your tire is flat." pointing to the right front. The car was not tilted over like you would expect and I hadn't hit any potholes but we decided to pull in anyway. Sure enough, the tire was flat. I tried the inflator I normally carry but it wouldn't hold air. I looked for the lug nut wrench and there wasn't one! The pitfalls of buying a used car. We called CAA for roadside assistance and we were told it could be up to a half hour before anyone came. The guy actually showed up ten minutes later and had the wheel swapped over to the space-saver spare in a few minutes. How long had I been running on a flat tire? I had gone 45 km home from my girlfriend's apartment a coupe of hours earlier. Did I run all the way on Highway 401 with a flat tire? Anyway, now I have to shop for a new set of four tires since they all look a bit pooched.

That was your guardian angel for sure
Yesterday turned out to be pretty good day! Had to work an early half day.
Then got invited to GF's family impromptu Labor Day gathering. Guess her brother didn't have to work.
So the family organized a last minute BBQ. GF texted me if I had to work. Was like I get off work in an hour.
She was like get yer booty over here. Had burgers & hot dogs with potato salad & corn on the cob
Also had ice cream & cake. Guess they nabbed a discount cake that someone never picked up.
So we all hung out in backyard. Played games & hung out in/near the pool. Was fun! 🙂

Sometimes last minute things can be the funnest.
I went to my brother's to help him pack. He is living rent-free in a condo my father owned, and now that my father died, it has to be sold. It has been the worst experience of my life dealing with him. He is a hoarder, I discovered, and rage-filled and mentally ill. He keeps organizing stuff instead of packing it. I hope today's work will get him started, but I am filled with despair. Meanwhile, the condo fees aren't getting paid, because I can't pay them and my own rent, too. We have arranged for him to take over my father's rent-subsidized apartment, and the deadline for him to move in is October 31. But I have no idea if he will be ready then, especially as he will only pack if "somebody helps him," which means doing it for him. But when I try to help, he wants to direct the help, to move stuff around rather than pack it. It is nightmarish, and all while I am grieving my father and dealing with all the other tasks of being executor.

Good luck
Played golf with a new friend today. Played terribly! I am definitely the sort of player that needs to be consistent with practice, or I lose it! At least I didn't lose any balls, where as he lost 2. We play on sand greens and there were snake tracks on the third hole today 😕 We're used to seeing roos tracks but snakes are scary to see, so close to the hole! I heard a story from one of the other ladies about the size of the spiders they find in the holes.

Got a bit of gardening done this afternoon, but this time of year its so overwhelming. Gone from dormant over winter to totally sprung into spring! Weeds as tall as me. I had to chop them with the hedge trimmer and still more to do. Big storms expected tomorrow so I need to get the dogs walked early and then catch up on housework.

My brother called asking about the truck. He knows A LOT about cars, since he buys and sells them. He also gave me a number to a company that buys vehicles, even if they don't run. I was on the phone with him while he called there. They offered $550 and I'll take it, if it turns out the truck needs more than a new battery.

It feels good to have another option.
