SPOILER-WARNING

This thread is intented for people who've read the entire book to discuss the story. If you haven't read it entirely, you will get spoiled.

Now that we have that out of the way... what did y'all think about the story.

I never saw Dumbledore's death coming; I'm still not really convinced Snape is evil.

Anyhow, I really didn't like the ending; the funeral scene that is. Harry breaking up with Ginny, trying to get rid of Ron and Hermione, and quitting school. Especially the first two are really stupid... After all, Dumbledore said love was supposed to be the answer!?

So, tell me what you think.

I have totally been convinced since the beginning of the series that Snape is double-crossing Dumbledore. He just didn't seem at all like he was against Voldemort. I mean anytime that Harry would say Voldemort in front of him he would lose it and tell him not to say that name. He was always way to interested in the darker side of the dark arts too in my opinion.

I was shocked to hear however that Snape was the one that told Voldemort about the prophecy. Although it does kinda make sense and I think Dumbledore was way too trusting for his own good.

When I read the part where Snape killed Dumbledore I kept saying to myself, "Nah, he's not dead it was all part of the plan..." Even though I have been against Snape, Rowling has always managed to explain away anything suspicious that he does.

Dumbledore was the only one holding Hogwarts together and I can't say I'm that surprised that they are thinking about closing the school. I was a little surprised that Harry decided not to go back to school. But it does make sense because he has to find the other horcruxes and who R.A.B is. It also made sense that he broke up with Ginny even though I liked them together. Everybody knows that Ron and Hermione are Harry's best friends but it probably wasn't common knowledge that he and Ginny were going out and she won't be of age when the others will so she won't be allowed to do magic and he had to break up with her to keep her safe.

What do ya'll think about them not going back to school next year but just going after the horcruxes and Voldemort?

Did anybody else think that this book went really fast? Like J.K. Rowling was sort of speeding through it? I did. What with all of the relationship drama along with everything else, there could've been more explaining behind things. Now we got new couples like Bill and Fleur, Lupin and Tonks, the ex-couple of Ron and Lavender, and Harry and Ginny.

I did not see Lupin and Tonks coming to tell you the truth. But it was a nice surprise.

Well, that's it for now. I'll let somebody else talk about it...😀 LOL

I agree with Anita Blake for most parts.

Except, I still believe Snape is a good guy... yeah, I still have my doubts.

I entirely agree that the book was a bit rushed. It was much too short. HP5 had a 150 more pages.

Now, on the whole leaving Ginny; I still don't agree... Harry should try to get more of his friends to help him; think Neville, Luna, and the other DA-members. 'Course Dumbledore told Harry not to tell anyone, but hell; he's dead, besides we now know that he's been wrong before.

I'm guessing for some reason Harry will return to Hogwarts next year, without the whole Hogwarts-setting the book wouldn't be the same.

On a whole other note, now that McGonnagal is head-mistress, does anyone else thing that Hagrid will replace her as head of house for Gryffindor?

I'm really not sure whether or not Snape is evil. If he is, then I'll be very angry at JKR, just because that would be the most boring, simplistic plot move ever. Snape was a mean teacher so he must evil, right? Yeah, that seems dumb to me. And they said Dumbledore had good reason to trust him, and I refuse to believe that Dumbledore would trust Snape because he said he felt bad about Lilly and James dying, which is what the book says. Dumbledore has better sense than that, and is also much more skilled at Legilimency than Snape, isn't he?

Anyways, sorry to rant so much, but I was disappointed in this book. I absolutely love all the other Harry Potter book, but this one just seemed to be lacking. The characters all seemed very one-dimensional, unlike the previous books. Also, there wasn't much actual plot until the very end, and it didn't move along very well. Again, I apologize. I know most people will be shocked to read this, because they love HP and JKR so much. 😉

I was so excited. I mean, after I finished crying. I love that Dumbledore is dead...wait that sounds bad. I don't mean that I wanted Dumbledore gone, or that Snape did the right thing (because he did the stupidest thing he could have possibly done, if he is a good guy. And if he's a bad guy...well, my whole world will shatter 😉) What I mean is that Dumbledore had to die for Harry to grow up and do what he has to do. Otherwise Harry would be forever looking to Dumbledore to solve his problems. It had to happen for the development of Harry's character. That doesn't mean I have to like it.

I would agree that this book went by way to fast. Also, it was a little jarring, after the battle at the Ministry and the whole dark tone of OOTP to suddenly confront so many parts of this one that were so lighthearted. The scene after Aragog's burial for instance, all the Quidditch, the scene where Harry kisses Ginny...ok, no I'm not gonna complain about that scene 😉 Love them.

Malfoy: WOOT!! AHHAHAHA!! Loved it! Evil and nasty and treacherous, but when you come right down to it, he's still a scared 16-year-old-boy! It was great.

Horcruxes: SOOO cool. Love the idea.

Slughorn: Loved it. I was saying a year ago that I wouldn't put it past Rowling to put Snape in the DADA job and get a new Potions prof. And she did and I love him. He reminds me so much of this one prof at school that it's scary.

R.A.B: Anybody else figure it out yet? *singsong* I know who it is, I know who it is! 😀 Well, I think I know who it is anyway.
I'd give anything to know Regulus Black's middle name.
What do y'all think?

Anchovy,
I think you've got it 🙂 I don't know how I missed the RAB thing...probably because I read it too quickly.

I hate to disagree with a princess (even a zombie one 🙂) but I think all the exposition was good (I always like to find out the back story) and I thought that the character development was done well. I think that you'll always get a slower-paced interval in such a long series and this was one of them 🙂 I reckon Snape hasn't returned to the dark side but that it is all part of his and Dumbledore's plan...and, staying with the Star Wars theme, I suspect that we haven't seen the last of old Albus (I'm thinking Obi Wan and what happens to Jedi when they seem to be killed)...plus JK really makes sure that the reader is in absolutely no doubt that Dumbledore trusts Snape totally and hammers the point home several times.

Can't wait for the last book 🙂

Interesting theory you have there Anchovy about R.A.B. it might be true, but it might not be just as well. I couldn't say.

I'm getting quite anxious for the seventh book too now. I just hope it's gonna be a lot longer.

Also, Mr. Pointy, I don't think Dumbledore should pull an Obi Wan. That'd be a bit too cliché... but hey, he has a portrait! Perhaps they could find a way to resurrect him, but even that I find doubtful.

Another let down of book 6 was that there weren't too many duels. Harry vs Malfoy one in the toilets was very short, the Death Eaters vs OP and DA was hardly described, and Harry vs Snape was short too and since Snape managed to block everything not very interesting.

Dumbledore's portrait - good call Ally
Yeah, I think you got the RAB thing, for sure, Anchovy...not to give it away for those who don't wanna know, but check the wording of the note in the locket, and remember who calls whom what...could I be more cryptic? Also, said person, RAB, would have had a reason, being as he was trying to back out...

I thought Rowling did a better job of editing this time...I found HP4 and 5 dragged a bit in spots, and this one didn't seem to do that. I was expecting Dumbledore to be killed, but not by Snape, although I wasn't convinced he was good in any way. That scene reminded me of Mufasa's death in The Lion King...the disbelief about who was actually killing him from Dumbledore was distressingly well done.

I see why Harry "broke up" with Ginny, and is about to leave on a "hero's quest". It's classic mythology at its best! He figured out Voldemort will go after friends and family to get to him. He must complete the tasks to succeed. He has a girl waiting for him at home. If he disappears, and seems to have a falling out with the Weasleys and Hermione, Voldemort will spend time looking for him instead of picking off his loved ones. The school will open, but Harry will only show up half way thru the term...

One thing that is a bit worrying: The next book will start with a wedding...that is the classic formula for a tragedy, just like a romance starts with a funeral, real or metaphorical. I'm concerned that, like Frodo, Harry will have to leave the world behind to save it.

I agree with you guys who are saying you aren't convinced Snape is evil. It really is too cliche. Having him kill Dumbledore was a shock, definitely, but I think he may just be selfish and didn't want to die by breaking the Unbreakable Vow. Or maybe there's something we don't know, like Dumbledore's reason for trustuing Snape so implicitly. Dumbledore was too smart to trust him based on his apology for passing info to Voldermort that just so happened to kill him longtime enemy and incriminate his other enemy. Something else must have happened, something no one else knows.

As for Dumbledore, I didn't see his death coming. I had myself convinced it was Ron or Hermione. After he was killed, I still didn't believe he was dead. It didn't hit me until after Snape dissapparated and Hagrid was asking Harry if he was okay. Then I thought, "Wow, I think he's gone!" and those few tears turned into full on waterworks. I don't think Dumbledore will come back to life. It makes more of an impact if he doesn't come back. It shows that anything can happen and no one is safe. It really sets the stage for #7.

Anchovy- that theory of yours just might be true! It's the only logical conclusion. We've never actually seen the character, only heard of him, so he would be the perfect person to be R.A.B. Plus his connection to a certain someone who died would make it so much more...powerful, I guess is the word.

I agree with princess_zombie, sort of. I didn't like this book as much as the others and plot really didn't pick up much until the end, but I still liked it. The romance stuff was interesting, as was Harry's meetings with Dumbledore, where we found out so much information and got a lot of answers.

OOOHHH MY GODDD!!!!!!

How good was this book???? JKRowling certainly knows how to shock us.

Where to start? Half blood prince story line pretty pants really only bit i liked was when harry used sectumsempra on Malfoy that was great. I thought though that snape should have demanded Harry to bring the book and not just have let him off when he appeared with rons book.

Horcruxs, well that is a turn up for the books. Explains a lot though. I'm curious though as to who RAB is. I want to know now!!!! Like the Regulus Black theory although isn't he dead? Definitely thought this book was darker than the rest. I mean a pool full of dead bodies eww!

Harry and Ginny I can't believe it was over before it started! They are surely going to get together eventually though, aren't they?? Hermione and Ron though will they get their act together please!!!

And poor Dumbledore. Why Oh Why? I haven't cried so much in ages. From his death to the end i never stopped. How bad is that? It had to happen though as the only one who can defeat dumbledore is Harry and now he has no one to hide behind or to protect him. He has to do it all by himself.

I still think that Snape might not be all bad, I just can't see it. I have a feeling it had something to do with the Unbreakable Vow. I think it was a bit like a spell. He didn't want to kill Dumbledore but had no choice as the spell made him. I'm not really sure about this theory but i can't think badly of snape I know i should but i so don't want him to be evil because it would then be a flaw on Dumbledore for trusting him. I hope you know what i mean cos i really aren't sure.

P.S. Didn't really think that the reason Dumbledore gave for trusting Snape was a very good one i still wouldn't have trusted him. I'm wondering if there was another reason that we don't know about cos this reason is too flimsy.

Yeah, he is dead, as far as we know. But we don't know when the Horcrux was stolen. He could have gotten it before he was killed, if he was actually killed.

I was chatting with a friend today about Hp6 and i started thinking that maybe Regulus Black had stolen the horcrux before he died. I've started reading all the books from HP1 again coz i have a crap memory. Well Voldemort was in reign 11 years before harry's parents were killed and the fatal night that voldermort disappeared and then it's been 15 years since that night to when he and dumbledore took the supposed horcrux so it could be possible that it was taken before RAB died. Basically i'm rethinking my theories. JKRowling has so many depths to Harry's story that i'm not going to underestimate her. I mean we know nothing of Regulus Black really i don't remember him been portrayed as evil and sirius certainly wasn't so why should regulus. It's only their mother who is from what i can remember. Anyway i'm reading all 6 again to get my head round it cos it's been 2 years since i read them all and i've forgotten a lot!!!!

Gah, I just finished last night 'cause I didn't get my book until wednesday...

Hm, although I loved this book oh so much, I was a bit disappointed at the end. First of all, I so wanted Snape to be good, even since the first book, I was hoping and hoping for him to turn out to be good in the end... And about Dumbledore, I don't know, I always believed he was going to die (although, people told me he wouldn't, since it would be too obvious), but yea, didn't really surprise me... And I loved the Harry/Ginny thing, except, it was like oh btw Harry likes Ginny, and then they were a couple after a few months, idk, just was too little about it..
Anyways, when I finished I sort of wished that this had been the last book, 'cause the next one will be so depressing and, Harry not wanting to go back to Hogwarts and all.. I mean I get that's pretty necessary but still.. hm..

I agree that Regalus could have stolen the horcrux before he died, but when you say that he wasn't evil, are you forgetting he was a Death Eater? Voldemort supposedly killed him when he got scared and tried to back out. There could have been more to it than that, such as Voldemort killed him to try and get the horcrux back, or Regalus could have stolen it to try and ensure that Voldemort wouldn't kill him if he tried to escape.

Sirius tells Regulus's story in Book 5, the chapter entitled, The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, just for reference's sake!

I think Snape is evil, and that we'll get the showdown we've all been waiting for in Book 7...and Harry will kick his ass...

The message in the locket is one that someone who was being hunted by Voldemort might have left, and if Regulus was as good a wizard as Sirius, he could have gotten the Horacrux, and Voldemort wouldn't have known...especially if he was trying to get out of being a Death Eater.

I agree with everything you said. I don't care who you are, killing Dumbledore is evil any way you slice it. Plus, you kinda had a foreboding feeling about Snape from the first chapter of book 6 when he met with Bellatrix and Narcissa. There was just something not right about that conversation if he was really a good guy.

And your right about the locket thing. The initals fit and if it was Regulus Black that would put certain things in perspective.

Ok, and does anybody else think that the whole Lupin and Tonks relationship if not brought up in book 7 is going to be a bit pointless? Not that I don't think its sweet and nice, but if Rowling doesn't bring the relationship up in book 7, I mean what was the point of putting it in 6 but to just add some lightness and romance to it? (Not that book 6 needed any more romance! LOL)

He killed Dumbledore! How much more proof that he is evil do you want?! Gah! (😉) I don't think that Snape being evil is either boring or simplistic because, she spent the first 5 books having Dumbledore and others convince Harry (and therefore us, the readers) that Snape was good and could be trusted. I think there is more there than just snape feeling guilty about Lily and James dying but I think that it was one of those things that Dumbledore never got around to telling Harry. I agree that Dumbledore has better since than to fall for something like a guilty conscience so there must be more to the story.

Even if Dumbledore was more skilled at Legilimency, Snape has a good grasp on Occlumency, which he was supposed to be teaching Harry (but does anybody else feel like he wasn't really trying to teach it to him? He was just trying to be mean? I do.) and if he was teaching Occlumency to Harry to protect him from the Voldy, don't you think that Snape could protect his mind from Dumbledore. And besides Dumbledore doesn't seem the type to force someone's mind open to him unless he has good reason.

But, then again I could be totally wrong about the whole Snape thing and he could be dead and the person who killed Dumbledore was a death eater in disguise using Polyjuice potion...

Interesting theory about the polyjuice potion, doubt it though as its been done before
I loved the book. My favourite chapter was Spinner's End because it was one of the few chapters in the whole series that doesnt have Harry in them, or that he is mentioned. Also I loved to see some more of Narcissa, Bella and Snape there. Also that you became doubtful if he was good or not was great.

It was sort of alright to kill Dumbledore. I dont see how he could have contributed in a nice way in the coming book other than he's the character that Harry depends on more than anyone else. I think Dumbledore's death really is going to cause that Harry grows up.

The Romance was sort of boring but I loved the Harry/Draco vibes. I completely adored it! 🙂 Ginny/Harry was disappointing and not really what I liked about the book since I dont get Ginny and well... It was wonderful that someone else besides Hermione showed Won-Won some attention *lol* So I like Lavender/Ron but out of all the het pairings Hermione/Ron is my favourite [OTP is Harry/Draco].

I dont think Snape was evil to kill Dumbledore. Evil act but I think it was to make sure that he didn't die himself, that he kept cover and didnt make Draco a murder. All of which, Dumbledore was for so when he said "Severus, please..." I dont think he was begging for his life. But c'est moi.

Now I dont know what more to write of the book so...

I have a theory...Harry's scar is one of the Horcruxs.

now some people argued with me on this one, because of the fact that Nagini was probably not one because she can live and breathe and move on her own, and therefore, so can Harry. But why do you think Voldemort is so keen on keeping Harry alive. Of course, because of the prophecy saying he has to kill him, i guess...but still. if he kills harry, he kills a part of his soul. but there are still others out there. and He still has his inside him. So killing Harry wouldn't be a big of a blow as people think. Also, he knows he's never be defeated afterward, because Harry is dead.

and I KNOW! I really want to know who R.A.B. is!!

And I think Snape was just trying to save his own life, by killing Dumbledore. He's not evil. At least, I don't think so.

WOOT...finally some Ron and Hermione action...*donces*

But why would Voldemort make Harry a horcrux? He didn't know Harry would survive, so making him a horcrux would be kinda pointless, since he thought Harry would be dead after he performed the Killing Curse on him. I could understand if he knew Harry would survive, but he didn't and therefore, he didn't know that the scar would be there.
