i was just watching the episode where spike tells buffy how he killed the two slayers, and they showed the scene with cecily.

i only just now realized that cecily & halfreck are one and the same.

please tell me i'm not the only person that NEVER noticed this before! (and i've *only* been watching buffy since the first time it aired!)

This has been discussed a time or two, It was never really confirmed one way or the other officially I don't believe, but there was a scene when Spike first met Halfrek where they both stared at each other for a moment. Someone asked Spike what was wrong, and he said, rather quickly, "Nothing." Of course, both characters were played by the same actress, but that isn't rock hard proof. If it was, then Luke from Season 1 and the Judge, from Season 2, would also be the same character.

As I said, there isn't any official confirmation or denial, but quite a fer of the fans firmly believe that they were the same character.

She preferred the term "Justice Demon."

She calls him William though so that clearly indicates that they've known each other from earlier. Here's that bit of conversation from Older and far away.

HALFREK: I just go where I'm-

Halfrek pauses, looking to her right as Spike walks up.

HALFREK: (shocked whisper) William?
SPIKE: (frowning) Hey, wait a minute.
BUFFY: You guys know each other?

Shot of Willow, Clem, Sophie, and Tara getting up and approaching slowly.
Halfrek still staring at Spike, but now she snaps out of it.

HALFREK: (quickly) Uh, no. (laughs) No.

She fiddles with her hair nervously.

SPIKE: (still frowning) Not really.

Shot of Buffy looking confused.

From the Buffy Wiki:
In the season 6 episode "Older and Far Away", Halfrek recognizes Spike and calls him by his human name, William. Spike also recognizes Halfrek, but when asked to explain this they both sheepishly deny being acquainted. This implies that Halfrek had previously been Cecily. However, Halfrek once told Anya that she witnessed the Crimean War (circa 1853). The timing of this event would indicate that Halfrek existed as a demon at least three decades prior to the adoption of youthful human form in Cecily. Joss Whedon and Kali Rocha have both made statements that Halfrek and Cecily were indeed the same entity.

Halfrek later appeared in the non-canonical comic Spike: Old Times, which established that she was 'on a job' at the time that William fell for Cecily. The night William became a vampire, she caused the deaths of the rude party-goers who had laughed at William's poetry.

I noticed it when I saw it for the third time or so and just went, "Hey, one moment!"

And to add to Miss Kitty F's post: I didn't read the comic but after I noticed they were the same person, I assumed that Cecily was just one of Halfrek's jobs. Which would also explain the stonecold bitca behaviour.

Of course, both characters were played by the same actress, but that isn't rock hard proof. If it was, then Luke from Season 1 and the Judge, from Season 2, would also be the same character.

But Luke and the Judge clearly look entirely different while Cecily and Halfrek don't. And, as The Kinslayer already pointed out, Spike and Halfrek obviously recognised each other so we can assume that they are, in fact, the same person (Cecily and Halfrek, that is, not Spike and Halfrek).
How to explain the Cyrus/Andrew issue... I'm at a loss there. Coincidence? Distant cousins? Identical grandson? We'll never know 😉

The Luke/Judge thing was more or less a joke. (Less, I guess, if I'm the only one to appreciate it)
I'm quoting the book Dusted: The unauthorized guide to Buffy the vampire slayer;

"Jane Espenson claims actress Kali Rocha wasn't deliberately cast as Halfrek with regards to the fact that she'd already played Cecily: 'She came in and auditioned[like anyone else], but when she had the role... we made a descision to play with that." After the fact, the producers added the short scene where Halfrek and Spike awkwardly recognize each other.('The Succubus Club internet readio interview, May 22, 2002)."

I'm very glad they decided to make them the same character. I hate when actors are "re-used" within the same verse.

Btw, Spike: Old times=a good read.

I noticed that the very first time that I saw that ep... I was like "Aha!" LOL. I loved that the writers did that little
scene, although it would have been awesome
to see more of an exchange between Spike and Halfrek... 🙂

Oh yes, I noticed this the first time around...

But does anyone know WHY Cecily became a vengeance demon, thus becoming Halfreck?

Unless it's mentioned in Season 8, it's never mentioned on the show... I liked to think that the guy she ditched William for back in the day royally screwed her over, and she went all demony. 😉

As if listening to that poetry wasn't enough for her to wish herself as a demon, but to find out that some of it was written about her? Well.
And another thing, how did Halfreck recognize Spike as William? the hair do was quite different, unless of course William had already experimented with that style and colour!

Aw, c'mon Angel liked his poems..and cried at ballet.

But it is a twist of fate that poor Willie was infatuated with a vengeance demon (someone already mentioned the Crimean War reference from Lessons) and gives a softer note to her rejection in FFL.

As for Halfrek recognizing Spike, judging by her reaction she was quite pleased to see him (maybe hoping his infatuation with her to be continued).

It's never told on the show why Halfrek became a demon, but one of the Spike comic one shots (non canon) includes Halfrek's story and is a pretty interesting read.

She became a vengeance demon because a girl she loved (I think it was her sister) was killed when their village was attacked (by Vikings I believe). She then became a demon and I think she killed her sisters killer. And then she killed his once once her grew up, but by then that guy had gotten a son, and she let him gre up and killed him, but he had a son and the story continues. In London, 1988, she was at that party to kill another son.

It's a very interesting comic. *googling*

It's called Spike: Old times

Why do you think she rejected William for another guy?

Spike's face is pretty distinctive.

I have never read the comics, so I wasn't aware that we were given a backstory on Halfrek. That was just my theory, that she had become a vengeance demon after because some man had screwed her over. 🙂 But if it's true that she was already a vengeance demon when William was in love with her, that adds a pretty cool twist on why she told him he was beneath her and rejected him the way she did...

I kinda figure her dad raped her or something and that's why she became a vengeance demon. I think Anya mentioned that Halfrek had daddy issues in the ep when Halfrek fulfilles Dawn's wish, and I think I remember Halfrek focusing on hurt childrens' wishes, but I could have made that up.
