I Need Help Picking An Angel Clip For a Presentation

I am taking a Cult T.V. class and I have to do a presentation next week already! Today was the first day! We weren't allowed to do it on a show we would discuss in class. Buffy is out, because she is spending a whole day teaching the show! yaay! And Firefly is out too (and she said she knows one of the producers of the show and he might come in to speak with us!).

So, I raised my hand super quick and got dibs on Angel (and a good thing too, there are like 6 buffy fans in the class!).

So i have a week, i need to do a 15 min presentation, the clip has to be 5 minutes. And basically this is what the syllabus says:

"once the rest of the class has viewed the clip, you will lead a critical discussion analyzing its general significance, its place within the broader context of the show, and any questions it raises with various audiences. Try to select the kind of iconic scene that you feel makes the show "cult", and be prepared to explain why you chose it".


Ok, well, to be honest i havn't watched season 4 or 5... so i cant choose something from there because i won't know what im talking about. (though maybe i could possibly do the puppet episode, i dont think it gets more "cult" than that).


I really wanted to focus on season 1 though, i figure itd be most important as it established the spin-off. Maybe a scene from the episode when Buffy comes and Angel is "human" because of the ring (sorry for not being as smart of an angel fan and knowing the name, the last time i saw it was, well, when it orginially aired!).

Any suggestions? I know you guys would be the biggest help!

Ok you just mixed up too Angel eps there...the ep with the ring is called 'Into the Dark', Buffy doesn't come to L.A. in that ep Oz does. Buffy does however come to L.A. in I Will Remember You and Angel turns human in that ep. To be honest I wouldn't use either ep because it doesn't show why Angel the show was a cult hit on it's own. Both stories have too much to do with Buffy. I think I would use a season 2 ep becuase this is when we really see Angel's struggle with himself and really that is what the show is about. Maybe when he goes through the trials to save Darla, how he passes and she still can't be saved which would be topped off by that incredible scene when Drusilla comes back and turns Darla in front of him.
 
I'd go with the clip of Doyle sacrificing himself to save everyone in the episode Hero.

It shows the sacrifice of one man, the passing on of a gift to cordelia, which will forever change the show.

It also brings sorrow and remembrance to such a great character.

I ditto the Hero scene. But how does it show the TV show is cult. Well that scene has all the conventions of a cult show- contains sci-fi conventions, characters we personally relate to, Doyle says 'we all have something to atone' for; the powerfulness of the quote is purposefully personal to the character whilst reaching all members of the audience, we see a huge development in a main character which is another factor of cult shows (as apparently they are the ones that have such well developed and multi-dimensional characters) and the self-sacrifice became kind of a big thing for Angel and Buffy fans. I think the majority of us went 'what? No!' so you could say this scene, and by extension the plot line, united all the viewers in their reaction which is another key factor of cult shows. Plus, on a basic level, the entire scene has that 'I'm a cult show, don't you love it?' feel to it. Haha. Though that comment *may* not work for an actual presentation. haha.

I'm just rambling here, trying to challenge a tutor I had for a film studies class a long time ago. Haha.
 
I'm incredibly jealous. I want to take that class!

Anyway, how does your teacher define "cult" exactly? If I knew that, I might be able to help more.
 
well she doesn't have a specific definition. its something we are going to evaluate over the entire semester. She asked the class what we thought was "cult" and they came up with all different points, all which she said are valid. But we all seemed to agree on the rabid fan base is a big key part of it lol.

We're not rabid. Just enthused....
Angel had a small, but passionate, loyal audience...that's "cult" as I understand it right there. And cult's often something that's outside of mainstream culture.

For me, the show didn't really gel until the Faith mini arc in Season 1. That's when it started to break out of its standalone formula.

With Faith, you've got a crossover character from another "cult" show (well, they're all crossover characters, but...). That ups the culty factor, maybe. And you've got core themes of the show...pain, suffering...second chances, the possibility of redemption.
 
that's why i was thinking of doing a cross-over episode... but... at the same time i want to show how strong angel was on it's own. it's a tough decision.

I would go for Epiphany where Angel says that great quote:


ANGEL: Well, I guess I kinda worked it out. If there is no great glorious end to all this, if nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do. 'cause that's all there is. What we do, now, today. - I fought for so long. For redemption, for a reward, finally just to beat the other guy, but... I never got it.

ANGEL: Not all of it. All I wanna do is help. I wanna help because I don't think people should suffer, as they do. Because, if there is no bigger meaning, then the smallest act of kindness is the greatest thing in the world.

Because it sums up Angel and the battle he has across all five seies of the show. Epihany is a great episode too.

Crap. this is going to be hard. im going to get to watching some of it today and see if i can decide. I'll let you all know what I choose.

Ok I think im going to use the scene from Hero. I figure i can talk about it being a staple of Joss whedon, to always expect the unexpected. And that yes, maybe to some its over the top, but to the fans it is what these shows are all about. I'll bring up the theme of sacrifice/redemption occurring throughout both shows, and also that i think it was a key episode in really hooking the fans and what started the "cult". I also am going to comment on how a lot of Angel fans were in fact, NOt originally Buffy fans which is why it was taken more seriously and even became known much more as its OWN show rather than a spinoff.

Of course, i need to elaborate on all that so i can talk for 10 minutes lol. Any other points i should bring up?
 
Angel trying to kill wes at the end of series 3, or the angel episode sanctuary.... oh oh the first episode when angel kicks that guy out of the window from wolfram and hart... or when angel leaves the lawyers to dies... sorry I think there maybe just too many to choose from...lol what about the scene where angel reveals his plan to everyone in series 5
 
I just found out i don't have to go friday. My professor was going to just have us present in order we signed up but thought itd be better to do the shows on corresponding days. so i go March 7th on the day she teaches Buffy! I'm soooo excited that im presenting that day cuz im a dork.

Im fairly certain im sticking with the hero scene, though i do love the whole end of "in the dark" because it also talks of his search for redemption, etc and the humor within the convo Angel and Doyle have is very light hearted. The "Hero" scene is SO sad, i was watching it and couldn't help but get a little teary (i hope i don't do that in class) but there's SO much more for me to discuss there, i think. Oh well, so i'll depress the hell out of everyone. Maybe my professor will let me put on the "i dont dance" scene from "She" to lighten things up after haha. thatd be awesome.

Anyway, when the time rolls around and i do my presentation, ill update you guys on how it goes. but now its a while away!

You made a great choice. By far my favorite season 1 Angel ep and one of my favorite scenes.

Yea you might depress the class, but if you make someone cry it will probably get you extra points! It's a very emotional scene, I've teared up many a time watching it.

Hope it all goes well. 🙂 How can it not, with a Doyle scene? 😉

I think it would be nice and relevent. The scene where he dies he is being so brave, that will be non-Angel fan's first impression of Doyle and anyone who watched the show knows it took him a long time to get there. By showing that scene it higlights( for me anyway) the great themes of the show. Redemption, Faith and Strength.
