I Seek The Musical Knowledge Of The BB. (Sequel to a 2004 thread).

Because I mainly listen to metal from the 80's and 90's I don't really have much to advise you on. One band that is kinda new (as in the last 4 years or so, that's new to me!) is Avenged Sevenfold. I love this band. I'm a big fan of metal with a message, and they can deliver one. Also, Trivium is an awesome band and they do an awesome cover of Master of Puppets. Speaking of covers, I also suggest the Killswitch Engage cover of Holy Diver. That's all I've got.

Oh, one more band I always try to turn people onto is Acid Bath. They are not a new band, as their first cd came out in either 1992 or 1994. They only have two cds because the bass player was killed and they disbanded after that. It is what I like to call "swamp metal". If you've never heard of them, check them out.

I'm not at all a fan of Scissor Sister's music, but I was dragged to see 'em at Oxegen this year, and they were one of the best shows I've seen all year. Forget Muse, Scissor Sisters were the best act that whole day of the festival.

Actually, you know what? I've been kind of looking for a way into older (I tried really bloody hard to find a different word to that) music, ever since accidentally realising I think I'd like Stevie Nicks a lot. I'm looking for recommendations for pretty much anything before the 1980's that's not the Beatles or Elvis, and I really don't know where to start. Help?

The last album I really, really, really loved was Arcade Fire's Neon Bible. I could hear it a million times in a row, and every time I'd hear something new and weird going on in the mix. It's not a perfect album, the deliberately murky production kind of swamps some of the finer instrumental noodling, the middle bit loses a bit of momentum, and then the closer, My Body Is A Cage, is just a weird choice. It's a great song, it's a really terrifying sounding track, it's just a weird note to go out on. But man, there's something about that album that still makes me feel sort of queasy, in a good way. It gets me all worked up every time I hear it, and I've been listening to it non stop for nearly a year now.

But... the last album I really (x1) loved was Radiohead's In Rainbows. It took a while to win me over, because I was sort of expecting paranoid old Radiohead, with all their electro uneasiness. The new, mellower, "oh-my-God-I-think-Radiohead-are-talking-about-love" Radiohead were a bit of a shock.

I actually hadn't realised how many Led Zeppelin songs I'd already heard, once I started looking. Any album in particular I should aim for, or would you just tell me to start from the start, N4h?

I finally did get around to working my way through some John Butler trio stuff, by the way, bloody hell that's quite some guitar. I think I should probably really try and see a live JBT show to get the most out of it, although I suspect I might just leave frustrated and enraged at my horrible lack of musical ability. Truly, I am cursed - I really, really love music, but man, I can't even hum in tune, never mind play a damn instrument. I think that might be why music writers tend to be so damn bitter, they're all just thwarted rock stars, pawing at the shop window...

N4H? I'm not offended he's one of the good guys 🙂

The obvious starter would be Led Zep 4 (the Four Symbols album) but I also really like Led Zep 3 and Physical Graffiti...the other albums are excellent but those three are my faves🙂

Really, you can never go wrong with pretty much anything from the 90's (macarana excluded). The Toadies are awesome, Flaming Lips (yay Oklahoma!), Smashing Pumpkins, RHCP, Sneaker Pimps, The Verve , Beck, Foo Fighters...more recent...White Stripes, the Killers (someone already mentioned them I think but they are good), umm...also love Aerosmith and Pink Floyd, Billy Idol...

Guilty Pleasures...Shakira and Nelly Furtado
 
I'm currently addicted to the song I Will Always Return by Bryan Adams and anything by Liz Phair. You should check them out!
 
How about Lostprophets? I like them a lot (obviously). They have three CDs out and each CD is WILDLY different than the last, I would recommend the second two though.

Do you like harder rock? If so, try Chevelle (Songs to listen to: Antisaint, I Get It, Brainiac, Saferwaters, Well Enough Alone, Until You're Reformed, Get Some). Also, Breaking Benjamin (So Cold, Forget It, Breath, The Diary of Jane, Home).

I'm also a fan of 30 Seconds to Mars.

Other artists/bands I like from the top of my head: Within Temptation, Evanescence, Mika, Muse, The Dandy Warhols, Damien Rice, etc.

You should give the band Rush a try sometime, if ya haven't already. And while Peter Frampton is a Rock legend, a lot of the younger folks find him a bit of an acquired taste. Listen with an open mind.

What can anyone tell me about Velvet Revolver? Good or no? I know former STP frontman Scott Weyland is leading this band now, and as I love STP I'd like to give a listen, but a few people keep telling me they suck.

Not sure if you listen to Audioslave but they sound similar to a few older bands so you might like them. Show Me How to Live and Revelations are my favorite songs of theirs.
