I think I hate N4H...

Honestly I think you just need to read em, and you can't really listen to the opinions of whether its out of character or not.. because obviously there is a lot of debate about it, so who knows what side you'd fall on. Why don't you just illegally download them for free (eek sorry to all the purists/ppl who don't like torrents)

I don't steal and I don't wanna waste money on something that fans I respect think there is something iffy about it.

I respect Lyri's opinion, I respect N4H's opinion (on Buffy though not necessarily everything else), I respect (I don't wanna say this) Keanoites opinion and Cangel to name some.

I haven't listed everyone because well I don't respect all of you and your opinions mean even less to me.

If I am going to invest, I want the opinions of those I do respect and the rest of you, well post away. I either think what you're saying is valid or don't give a flying rats ass but I'll never tell you who is who on that list - thats another thread completely🙂

I know you might not have meant it but Rude Much? Its fine to respect people but to go out of your way to list whose opinion you respect and then to basically tell everyone else to shove it isnt that great.

If you like Joss or not should not play a big part of this, you like Buffy and he did design it, so in some regard to have that Buffy love you have to like- at least in part- enjoyed, Joss writing....Specifically Buffy

Buffy was strongly inspired by comics, Kitty Pryde/ Shadow Cat to be more exact. I'm buying the comics because I'm looking forward to see how the product is shaped by the original vision/ influence when it's in that original visions medium.

You can do a lot of things in print you can't do on screen, and with talented actors of course you can say vice versa. A comic is sort of a blending of the two and they can have some rather awesome story and plot twists just like a good book or a movie. (and if you felt like a kid at Christmas waiting for a week to find out what happens next with TV series, wait until you get a load of the pin cushions you'll be perched on with month long waits...I find it lets you appreciate the story a little more. lets you think on it too, without being shown the way so quickly.)

Things tend to happen faster in comics despite television seasons running nearly twice as many 'episodes' than a typical comics plot year, and that can be a good thing also.

A comic story can have more focus on the story...usually...than a television series does. Writers directors don't get so hung up on trying to recreate the visual in their head on film, they have artists just drawing what they see instead. They are not limited by budget for effects and some cool things can happen without looking to lame.

Not so much is paid attention to nuances like body language and tone...but a good comic will find ways to work these in.

Don't worry so much about out of character worries; as much as our heroes go through its expected at least by me to see them change, I have not read any season 8 yet, but I'm expecting character growth, not just a personality profile applied to environments with exactly the same, predictable decisions and outcomes. I might not like the change either, but does that mean the product must stink? Does that mean that personalities can't change back? In the end does it make it not Buffy the Vampire Slayer for you?

I advise you hunt down a few comics, not go after the whole set at once. Buy them as long as you consider them worth buying. I'm surprised you'd want to be talked into anything instead of deciding for yourself. fortunately for you, we all enjoy talking here, especially about Buffy :grouphug:

I was going to avoid this thread, because there seemed to an implicit, then explicit dis against members who's opinion you claim you don't value. Kind of childish to make a point of preaching that, if you ask me.

But what the heck, I can't stay mad at you Edmund (now), so I'll offer my advice, for what it's worth.

Based on what I glean to be where your interests lie from previous threads, I'd recommend you check out This One.

It's what they call a TPB (trade paperback). It's a collection of five issues from the second story arc in the series. It's Faith-centric, but Buffy and the other characters make appearances. It includes a stand-alone which has some additions to the Buffy mythology, and some fascinating background stuff if you want to search for it.

I'd also recommend you get that stand-alone (Anywhere but Here) as a separate issue. What you want there is the letters page. I think you'll get a kick out of the letter pages. Apparently they aren't in the TPBs.

That's a reasonable investment of cash for an investigation I think - 20 bucks, or so American. It will give you a pretty good idea of whether or not you want to go for the rest of the series, and if so how you want to purchase them.

I love it - 'might'.

I have been posting how long here?

I meant it as it stands, there are some peoples opinions on this board I highly value and others that I couldn't care less about. The people I singled out, well they have earned respect other people really haven't. As I said, not everyone who has an opinion I do respect was mentioned and no one who I don't respect was either.

I'm not someone who will waste time and money on something based on comments from people I don't respect so I gloss over the posts.

Anyone has issue with that, well your big boo-haha.

Besides, I knew it was a cheeky way to get N4H to post in the thread😛

Point 1)
I don't like Joss. I do love Buffy and Angel but I can't say anything else I have read/seen of his I have liked. Could that be then that its the people that have surrounded him and not necessarily him? Probably.

I find him a little whiney and such.

For instance in X-Men. He wrote a 'joke' that Halle Berry had to deliever, the one about Toads in lightning.

That was just not funny but at a Convention rather than admit it just wasn't that good, he blamed Berry. Now to me that smacks of someone rather childish.

On top of that, I have always had the impression, rightly or wrongly, that he didn't care as much about Buffy as everyone likes to think. Its OK for people to move on and want new things but he just seemed to drop it the moment he started getting what he wanted. The thing is, what he wanted started to fail because the fans didn't go with him, which I am sure he thought they would. His ego seemed to suggest that he thought the fans were his fans and not fans of the show.

Point 2)
I might not like the change either, but does that mean the product must stink?

Well no it doesn't mean 'must' however it might. If you have 7 years of one thing and then that is totally bummed up the ass and gone a totally different way, you might not like it - hence the reason for asking the opinions of those you respect.

Does that mean that personalities can't change back?
Again no, but after 18 'episodes' you should have some reason as to what has happened. As I have stated I have seen bits HOWEVER I am willing to put on hold my prejudice based on what comments I have seen while asking for the opinions of other.

In the end does it make it not Buffy the Vampire Slayer for you?

Well IF the character changes are forced without real answers as to why, then its not Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Granted if people who knew me 2 years ago met me now they would see a different person however, they would say 'wow, you've changed' which would then lead to me telling them what has happened in that time.

We are the product of our own history.

It doesnt matter how long you have been posting here. I have been posting here since 2003, its fine to respect some peoples opinions more than others but to go and tell everyone else they might as well not give theirs is just rude. I know I should take my own advice sometime but it wouldve been better to just ignore those posts instead of telling them they are wasting their time trying to be helpful.

When I asked 'how long have I been posting here' that wasn't some pissing contest comment saying I have a right to say it, it was laughing at your choice of 'might'. To suggest I don't know what I am saying is silly.

Also, whose posts have I said are wasting my time.

I clearly stated that while the names I put forward are peoples opinions I do respect, there are others.
I didn't list all the people who posted on the thread and say 'your post I respect' or 'your post I don't respect'.

IF you want to assume I meant everyone else, well thats all you and not what I said.

If you want though, I can say which side of the respect line you all on🙂

.....so yeah, the comics. Interesting stories, ya?

Edmund - here is an idea that won't cost you anything, and you can get the main idea of the story

YouTube - smartjoe299's Channel

This guy did an animated version of Season 8 and Angel's season 6 using the comics for the dialogue and action. He lifts it right out.

Thought I'd suggest it for you.

Thanks for the info.
ok whilst i'm buying the comics as they are released i have not yet read many of them.

from the bits i have read though is alot of variations on the characters beahiours from the show to there behaviour in the comics, how ever as i've read in various posts they are starting to get the charcters back online and acting in the way we no and love them.

what the comics do provide however are a chance to experience new and unusal things that in my opinion had season 8 been a tv series we wouldn't have seen

if you do decide to go ahead and get them though it may take a fair few issues for you to get into it,there may well be moments where u feel like just throwing them out because of how un like buffy it starts out but once you get to the point where thay have managed to get the chemistry back to how we no and love buffy it will be well worth the enjoyment and money factors.

my opinion is you should get it and try out those issues as you will find there is a moment where it will turn around and become the enjoyable buffy it should be, however if you read all them and dont like it you can stop at least you've gave it ago, plus it would indeed open up much room for new debates that you could get involed in

hope thats some help to you

I'm curious if the comics make heavy usage of the thought bubble. I checked out the animated adaption of issue one that chase so kindly suggested...it seems like it was used a a lot; especially at the end with Buffy's rant on Dawn.

Sometimes with soap operas and such you 'hear' loads of self dialog and flashbacks...even daydreams. Short of Earshot I don't think Buffy is too prone to that style. (I might just be forgetting something though)

For me, much of the love for the show was not just based on love of detailed characters, but also their group dynamic as well. I enjoyed seeing them react to one another as a means to forward the story. Don't get me wrong...I love the 'thought bubble' I just like to be shown story element unfolding, not being told all McBeth styled about issues concerning family.

The ol' thought bubble is something unique to comics...I can accept it much easier than some loony disembodied voice played as backdrop to an actresses facial expressions (its on screen identity) My only concern is that the bubble might get overused.

As far as prior comments by the Adder formerly known as BotD, You might think that Joss is whiny, but I hope the reason you dislike the joke the most is because it was simply not funny. I try to stay away from artist prejudice, let the work stand for itself you know. I'm curious...there are a number of episodes that Joss wrote himself, how do you feel about them? The overall story arc I believe to be very influenced by Joss, his stories always seem to have a moralistic bend to them. (for example Toy Story....jealousy, forgiveness and amends, homecomings, and acceptance.) I just am not convinced that Buffy is great because Joss surrounded himself with great people, so much as they in total made a great team and he a great leader on the project that is Buffy.

I admittedly drink the Joss kool-aid though, I just found your statement to be interesting and worth debating.

I agree whole heartedly with what you said concerning character development. It does need to make sense. I certainly expect it to; and would not imply otherwise. I do expect a change though, as we both realize that it's part of the character growth. If the comic does not ring true for me, well comics are cheap and even good stories are entitled to have chapters you don't necessarily enjoy. I'm willing to stick it out until a clear pattern of suck is established. Me being the Detroit Lion fan that I am...I'd likely stick around even then in hopes that it would reverse itself.

Can that be figured out in 18 episodes? No.

I can see the point of comparing it to something you do like. (The television series), but only by reading and reviewing on your own, not reviewing other readers. (However, I am biased in that judgment by an overall dislike for the role of critic...I can not understand the merit in letting others decide what I might or might not like, especially concerning topics I'm actually interested in. To each there own though, if the people in question mirror your taste I do get the want for advice)

I'm glad your giving it a shot, in some respects I imagine it's like season one all over again...growing pains, become familiar again with the characters and exploring plot lines. I often wonder how much of the latter seasons were shaped early on in prior seasons writing meetings. there has been a bit of a layoff between the comics and season 7.

Season one caught my interest but its what came from it in the following seasons once things started meshing latter in the series that really captured my heart. With luck I'll be able to say the same thing about graphic 'season eight' and hopefully the seasons that follow it.

There's a little more (internal) narrative in the comics than on the show, but I think that is common to most comics, it helps with the flow of the story. It is weird to adjust to with Buffy though
listen dude. if you dont get season 8 then retarted monkeys will flock to you and make you watch charmed..........while braiding your hair.

the moral of the story is that you should get season 8.
