There's been quite a bit of discussion about a proposed Buffy movie involving neither Joss nor any of the original TV cast, but I just thought that I would put a different spin on it. So, here is my question:

If Joss Whedon announced that he now owns total rights to Buffy and everything connected with it, and has decided to make a new "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" movie, based on an entirely new cast of characters, in a completely new situation, would you be willing to at least give the movie a fair shot, or would you have to have Joss AND the original cast for it to be acceptable?

Yes, I would give it a shot if Joss were involved. Joss created Buffy, he played a huge role in developing her as a character and he knew her better than anyone. My fear is that without Joss the Buffy we will get won't be the same Buffy we grew to know and love.

While I love the original cast and would absolutely love to see them all together again I honestly don't see that happening and I'm not even sure that would be the best thing. They are all considerably older looking and I am not sure how that would work for the vampires who are supposedly not aging; it could be interesting to see how Joss would spin it if the original cast were to come back together. Would it be a re-boot or would it more of a 10 years later type Buffy movie? If it were simply a re-boot I think the aging of the actors would have a huge impact of the final product.

Like Faith said in the final episode, Buffy isn't 'the one and only chosen anymore'. Perhaps the idea of thousands of Slayers doesn't lend itself well for a movie. It certainly detracts from Buffy's heretofore central and unique role.

Or an even better question:

Would you prefer Joss and a new cast/ set of characters...
OR
Whit Anderson and the old cast?

I think even with the cast aging it is totally doable.

Season 8 ends, they wake up and it was all a dream. Hey if Lost can do it why can't Buffy? Or Williw does a spell that reverses the thousands of slatted thing. Or Angel does it... It would hardly be the first time he did something similar.

Okay then they are all together, but 10 years older and trying to figure out what they do now. The gang find out that Angel and Spike are aging but they don't know why. They discover that it is the burden of having a soul and throughout the movie they try to figure out what to do.

I see it as a similar kind of thing to Captain Jack Harkness. 'i can't age but every year I see another wrinkle, another grey hair'.

Good point, there are ways to address their aging. It would be interesting what route Joss would take it down.

Now...how do we get Joss to do this???😛

Oh, I'd definitely give him a shot. I trust him enough for it to be worth going in with an open mind. I mean, I love what he did with Fray, so maybe it would be better for him to get some distance from the cast we know and do something new with the mythology.

Plus, it's his baby. If I don't like it, it's my problem.

Of course I'd give it a shot because Joss is involved. I'd be very excited for a Buffy movie even with a different cast (although it won't top the TV series guaranteed) because I would know Joss is behind it. I mean, let's face it. The actors have gotten older and it would be difficult to re-create their characters, especially with Angel and Spike since vampires don't age. Yet, I still think SMG could play Buffy, even Aly and Nick play Willow and Xander. They're all still working in the business. But, if Joss decided to get a whole new cast, I'd have to come to terms with it. The reassuring factor though would be his involvement in the project.

Now this, I love!! I'm totally on-board with convincing Joss. What should we try: chocolates, flowers, promises of sex-slaves?

d.) all of the above!
I wouldn't like it. I don't want to see a new cast playing the characters that were made so iconic by the old cast. It wouldn't feel right. If Joss was behind a new film with different characters then fine but don't cast someone else as Buffy, someone else as Spike etc it would just feel wrong.

The ideas which would enable the old cast to do a film sound really interesting and by having the old cast you'd really encapture the magic of the television series which you wouldn't do with a new cast.

I look at it from an excitement view. Would fans be more excited seeing the old cast or a bunch of new actors they have no connection with? I think it would be the former.

Meh... that whole age thing is a cop-out, IMHO. I mean, look at Angel in BtVS S1 and then in ANGEL S5. He obviously aged A LOT but did it really ever bother anyone? Not really. And I've seen the actors in recent photos and none of them look "old" to me.

But anyways, it would bother me seeing other actors cast as Buffy / Angel / Willow / etc but I trust Joss so I'd still watch. However, like VisionGirl said, I don't see how it'd jibe with canon and I don't want that to suffer just because he wanted to make a movie.

I trust Joss so I would probably give it a chance if he was behind the wheel, even if it was with a new cast... though I'm not sure I'd like it even so 🙂

I hate it when people bring up vampires not aging as a reason the original cast can't come back... Angel in Buffy season 1 looked like a TV teenager (real life 20's). Angel in season 5 of Angel looked like he was in his thirties. That makes sens because DB was in his 20's at season 1 of Buffy and in his thirties in season 5 of Angel. I've heard James say something about drinking pigs blood makes vampires look older... but I never remember anything like that explaining Angel's aging... they just ignored it and expected the viewer to understand no one actually stops aging but vampires are supposed to so to pretend he was the same age throughout.

I wouldn't mind the story being told differently from Joss' view at all... I just don't know why he'd want to. I mean he set up the story so beautifully in the show... why tell a different take on it? I can understand him wanting to make a continuation of the story in movie form... and that I would GLADLY go see... but this new movie is supposed to be a different take on the story of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. AKA a whole new story about a girl named Buffy who kills vampires. I don't know why Joss would want to do that. That being said, I trust Joss to not ruin the show (although some will say he already did with the comics), so I'd go see a different take on the story from his view in a heartbeat.

Totally agree with you about cast aging not being a problem. Viewers aren't morons and understand one is reality, the vamp is just a character and can easily "supsend disbelief".

It didn't bother me either, but now we're talking an additional 7 years on top of that. I'd be thrilled if DB and JM were up for being in a Buffy movie, but I wouldn't be surprised if they said no. I know James wasn't always keen on a Spike spin-off as he got older because he felt it didn't do the character justice. But, if they change their minds, I'm totally all for it 😀

Didn't DB say at a convention earlier this year, he'd do an Angel movie? And, J-August Richards (Gunn) was asked on Twitter if he'd do one and he responded with "HELL YEAH!" (which I thought was awesome) so hey - that's two down 😛

Lol, but yeah, I agree, I think a movie with all of the original cast would be pretty impossible, especially since, like StarSlayer has said, it's been seven years. Most of the cast has moved on from their Buffyverse roles.

Sarah has also said on at least one occasion that she would be willing to do a "Buffy" movie, but since she and David pretty well know that that's never gonna nhappen, it's a pretty safe bet that they weren't 100% sincere.

I get what people are saying about aging being a cop-out and I can see that. My only point in bringing up their age is that we watched them age considerably in BtVS and Angel (I definitely noticed even though it didn't bother me) and now they are another 7-8 years older, I don't see how they could pass for teens/young adults at all. Their age would somehow have to be addressed now. It could even be something as simple as 10 years later...

Come to think of it... A Gunn movie could actually be kinda awesome. I'm not usually a huge Gunn fan, but done right this could actually totally work!

I agree to a certain extent, but some of them have definitely aged. Nick Brendon looks pretty old and bloated. And despite how sexy he still looks, Tony Head is looking considerably older.
