Illyria- Why?

Okay, Illyria's return was predestined, thats fine. But why? Appart from showing off Amy Acker's talents and providing us with a new character what true purpose did she serve? I'm sure bringing back Old Ones isn't you're everyday kidna thing so there must be a reason but is it ever explained?

I've seen the finale but it's not really mentioned. Maybe its something that would of gone on during S6 but who knows.
 
It might have had something to do with the Apocalypse? If Angel hadn't averted/delayed it?? Not too sure though. Good point.

I won't deny that Amy Acker's performance was competent. But why bother turning Fred into Illyria? What purpose did the demon serve to the story? Fred's death seemed to have made a bigger impact that Illyria's existence.

I get the feeling that Joss Whedon, who is rumored to be a major fan of Acker's, wanted to give her a chance to show off her acting chops. Frankly, Illyria's presence did nothing for me. Nor did Acker's performance, since I had seen something similar on ST VOYAGER, with Jeri Ryan.
 
I loved Acker's Illyria and I'm sure that if we ever see a tvmovie,nor mal one or sth else it'll be further explored
 
I love Amy Acker, and her transformation (acting-wise) was amazing. I always believed that they wanted to spice up the cast. Cause more change. Maybe they wanted Fred to be more useful in The Apocolypse. So storywise, her purpose was to come and bring her army back to destroy the earth...she soon finds out that they were destroyed long ago. Then they deal with her decrease in power. Voila, she's a strong part of the team.
 
even though it is never really explained in the show as to why she was brought back I also think it was to send the world into an apocoplyse, she was suppose to raise her army and kingdom and bring earth back to the way it was when she ruled. And maybe its to awaken the rest of the Old Ones.
 
If she didn't become Illyria, she would have been dead during the last two episodes anyway most likely. I thought it was a good turn and showcased Acker's acting talent brilliantly.
 
Whedon himself has said that he did the change to show off Amy's acting skills.

It just seems that they made a big deal out of Illyria return but it kinda fizzled out.
 
I loved Illyria Amy plays her so well she is such an amazing actress and i agree she needs her own spin-off i' know i'd watch it and it should have james marsters right along with her...
 
i feel that illyria may have been the big bad this season if it wasnt for the axing.
but we will never no, hopefully it will get picked up because i wanna see at least 2 more seasons of angel then 3 seasons of spike/illyria

I still think if they had more time... like another season... Whedon and Co. would had explore Illyria alot more. She probably had more of a reason being there in the non season 6.

I think it's sad that Whedon and Co. thought it was necessary to kill off Fred, just to make Acker's performances more interesting. Or give her a more "interesting" role. It's too bad that I've seen characters like Illyria before . . . in STAR TREK. I wish that Whedon could have been a little more original.
 
Well I don't know about STAR TREK, but Illyria sure had a lot of similiraties with Anya.
 
I think that Illyria would have been further explored in another season. But in the end she was just used as a tool to make Wesley's death more acceptable since he was tortured by the loss of Fred.
 
I always thought that Illyria was there just to help Angel out in the fight against the Senior Partners... Illyria's could help more than Fred (fighting-wise) because well, Fred's just smart girl and Illyria's all-powerful (well, not anymore) god.

I think that once he realized that there was not going to be a Season 6, Whedon should have killed off Illyria in episode 5.19, when he had the chance.

She was an irrevelant character who was allowed to dominate a show that already had a starring character - namely Angel. And all because Amy Acker happens to be a favorite of Whedon's.

I think that is why I'm so negative toward Acker. She's not a favorite actress of mine. For the past three years, she was portraying a character whom I've had little regard for. And now just because Whedon likes her so much, she is allowed to portrayed a character who is not only unoriginal (see STAR TREK VOYAGER; ENTERPRISE; and ANDROMEDA), but also irrevelant to the plot. And she's allowed to be showcased above everyone else, including the star.

Yes, I'm bitter.

I agree on this point. I on the other hand did like the character of Fred (in the beginning). The really eccentric, post-Pylea Fred was funny and brought back memories of the younger Willow. But Illyria's character was essentially pointless imo, but that is not to say that I wasn't entertained by her.
 
I'm not sure exactly why they brought her back...there didn't seem to be much of a point, except it was a shock and for plot twists..but I don't really know what purpose it had..🙁

If that was Whedon's reason to kill off Fred and bring about Illyria, it was a very stupid move. And not worthy of a good writer. Shame on you Joss! ::bsad::
