Just off the back of your post, a few months ago I watched a documentary called Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story.Rosalind Franklin, whose work on identifying the DNA double helix is considered to be equal to James Watson and Francis Crick, who received the Nobel Prize for their work. OK, perhaps these men's names are not widely known, either, but she should be as famous as they are!
In the early days of silent film, many women made important contributions as producers and directors, only to be marginalized as the industry became more respected and profitable and therefore more under the control of men. Lois Weber, Mabel Normand, and Alice Guy-Blaché are a few who come to mind.
