What niggles you?

I get so irked by incorrect spelling and grammar, it's not even something I can put into words haha. I think it's because spelling is my only real skill...if there was a job in articulacy and spelling, I'd be Number One Employee every year! Unfortunately, it's not really that important!

I think I come across as quite blunt online, which is fine, I'm fairly blunt in real life, but I always try to remain polite, which I think is important online.

I also dislike when people write in all capitals.
Along with so-called "keyboard warriors".

Although sometimes, I do love reading a good online argument...I sit back and think:

(Ironic how that gif is spelled completely inaccurately, yet I still used it? 😛 )

lmao @ the gif. so true!
Is this about my Pterodacyle thing 🙁 lol, i hate people online that really think they are super intelligent or tough, eugh.

I dislike it when people go out of their way to be blunt or aggravating. It's not so much trolling, but the intent is there and it's rather obvious. After so many years on forums though I've learned to find it more amusing than anything, if you give them enough rope they'll soon ruin it for themselves (though I hate that saying).

I'm fairly reflective when it comes to posting. I like to think about both points of view before making a post and try to back up my opinions so I don't jump to any conclusions or incite any arguments (though of course there are exceptions). I think etiquette is about just that: considering other people and tailoring your posts in such a way as to ensure you're making a good point that won't intentionally sound too harsh.

I'm also a bit of a spelling geek, but on a site like this where a large proportion of members don't necessarily speak English as a first language you do have to be a bit more understanding.

I don't go out of my way to be blunt :p
I hate when people respond to posts and it is obvious they at best skimmed the post as there reply has nothing to do with the point being made.

As far as what defines internet etiquette I'm not really sure. I guess avoiding behavior that bothers others to the best of your ability.

Umm, when something that is written is sooo long, it's a pain for me to read it, because I don't have much patience for reading. But I do tend to write long posts, or anything long, just like I speak a lot in real life (I apologize to those who have to read me babbling. Also, to those who have to listen to me in real life).

I'm not afraid of a good argument, because I think it's healthy in a way. It practices you for the life outside the net. I didn't use to be this way, I was a complete wallflower who can't get into debates, and I'm glad I grew some backbone.

I always have an opinion about everything (not just here) and sometimes I can't hold myself back from expressing it, but I do try keeping it polite and fun for both sides because it's supposed to be fun. I will defend what I believe in, but I always try to keep an open mind and take things easy.

I hate it when I find errors in my post after I've posted it. Because I write very quickly, half blindly. Sometimes it's funny errors though, like my latest: "scooboobies". Thank god this board has the option to edit your posts. But when it's too late, it really annoys me.

I write a lot...I can't help it. I wrote essays in everyone's yearbooks hahah so don't worry about your "babbling"!

scboobie was great though :p
When someone tags hate posts on tumblr!! OMG It makes me so angry!! If you write a post about why you hate Spike or Angel dont tag it that character because the people who track the Spike/Angel tag are people that love that character. If you hate Spike youre not going to track the Spike tag so the people who are going to like your post arent going to see it. So really its pointless to tag hate unless youre trying to upset people.

@Cast_No_Shadow agrees: I don't go out of my way to be blunt

I wasn't making any kind of dig towards you don't worry, I'm more direct than that.

What defines it?

I think it's treating other people as you want to be treated, just as you should treat people in real life. Problem is, too many people say they don't care how other people treat them, and take that as leave to treat others however they feel like.

What niggles you?

- People who always have to create drama. Whether they have a need to start fights for their own enjoyment or they are those type of people who always have to feel persecuted, whether it's real or not. Especially people who think that it makes them "cool" to be "rebels" (in their minds). And even more especially when that energy could be used to solve real problems in the real world.

- People who think free speech means being about to say whatever they'd like in whatever manner they'd like, without regard for anyone else.

- People who think that being nasty and disrespectful of others is "just giving their opinion".

- People who don't take responsibility for their own actions, and those who are always pointing fingers at others and never at themselves.

- People who ruin other people's hard work and fun for everyone else because they need to rail against everything, even things meant to be fun and enjoyable.

- People who pick tiny tangential things out of posts to be outraged by when it isn't called for.

- People who think that belittling other people makes them look smarter, when in reality not being able to give your opinion without putting someone else down makes you incredibly inarticulate. And their close cousins the people who put others down to make themselves feel more important.

- People who don't know the difference between constructive criticism and rudeness.

- People who can't have a conversation without getting mean. And people who don't want to have a discussion, they just want to bash one side of whatever the topic is. But then they get outraged when you don't want to "debate" with them anymore.

- People who steal and think because it's the internet, it's okay or that "everybody does it".

- Being tagged in posts. I don't need a pager. 😀

- People who go on other sites to start crap. Mind your own business and leave us alone! And get a life, man.

So many points that describe what I feel. Just better than I'd ever could.
Netiquette is basically a set of rules made so that people are pleasant to each other online. So that everyone can enjoy the time that they spend socially on the internet.

What bothers me the most is when people completely disregard it. . . People who are just rude, with no real reason to be.

Or people who are completely unwilling to accept other's opinions. . . or respect them.

I also have an irrational dislike for overusing caps to make points. lol

DOES THIS ANNOY YOU? :p
I don't like it when someone doesn't agree with you, and they are so rude about it, that it's almost a personal attack.

I don't like people that don't respect the fact that I'm not going to agree with them.

I don't like it when people pretend they aren't being rude, and then proceed to back pedal.

I don't like it when someone won't explain why they feel a certain way about something. They just say I don't like it, or it's not good.

Hahah that gif...well I hate when people type in all caps. It's impossible to take them seriously. I also hate when people get insanely defensive and snooty online haha it just makes me think that they're trying to over compensate or something, like they feel as if they have no control in their real life, so they have to be a jerk online because it makes them feel superior.

Thankfully I have not run into anyone like that on BB...so far.

I try to treat people online, as if I'm speaking to them in person. I use the same etiquette on here, that I use in "the real world". I might even be a little more polite on here 😉 haha mainly because it's hard to be sarcastic on the internet without sounding like a bitca to some people.

I have a few:

People who go out of their way to point out spelling mistakes. I'm not at work, sometimes I make mistakes. If the only time you are going to comment on my posts/updates is to point out a mistake, do me a favour and keep walking.

Falseness. I have been doing this forum thing for a long time now and one thing has never changed. I am the same online as I am offline. I don't believe in changing my personality or the way I treat people purely because i'm sitting behind a laptop and not in the same room as them.

What do I think 'netiquette' is?

I would apply the same as I would offline as to how to treat others and how to behave but add in, stay off topic and use paragraphs. One massive blurb does not a good read make.

I agree with all that, but I always think people act differently online than irl, whether it's noticable to them or not.
I don't mind bad spelling and grammar so much but that's probably because I know I'm awful at it. If it's an entire paragraph wrtn lyk dis then yeah that bothers me but otherwise the occasional spelling error and grammar mistake is fine to me. Luckily I have spell check on my browser because otherwise I would already have spelled grammar wrong twice in this post 😛 Sometimes it's not even that though. Sometimes I just can't seem to type properly and letters go out of order without me realising or if I'm not paying 100% attention I type the wrong word completely!

I also don't like arguments on the internet. I know some people like a good argument and that's fair enough but it's not for me. I like a good discussion with alternate viewpoints mind you, but as soon as it turns into a full blown argument...nah.

And yeah, people who think being nasty is just giving their opinion. No matter how much you believe in something or are annoyed by someone else's opinion, you can respond reasonably and put your point across in a decent manner. There's no excuse.

Also, on a bunch of forums I've been on I've come across members who will do anything for attention. I mean I know it's nice to vent about life problems online, but its a bit fishy when all in one week you got on an f and beaten up and your dog died and your uncle had a heart attack and you had rabies and then your toaster exploded and caused a fire and then etc etc etc. You know what I mean?

Oh another one is people playing people against each other. It seems easier to do on the internet...just tell someone that such and such was talking about them, fake a copy and pasted chat log for good measure...no. Just no. Don't be an arse.

And copycats! Bloody copycats! When I was modding on a now defunct forum, we had a bunch of members who got outraged by some imaginary slight and ran off to form their own free version of our forum and proceeded to bitch about me in the chat box because I hadn't joined them...wtf. And then a little bit later the EXACT same thing but this time they didn't leave our board they just set up their own version...complete with all our forum descriptions copied and pasted over to theirs. RUDE.

I'd also say I hate when people who abuse smileys but err... I do that. It's a sickness! I can't help it! D:

There's probably loads more I could whinge about, but I'm really supposed to be getting ready right now 😛

I don't like it when people act like because they have a fancier vocabulary and/or are more eloquent their point is automatically better than mine.

I don't like it when people try to be "too polite" and aren't direct in what they're trying to say. if you dislike something someone's said, it's ok to say it.

I don't like it when people act like I have to agree with them or not post my opinions.

I don't like it when people type in text talk.

I don't like it when I'm having a discussion with someone and they refuse to attempt to listen to my point.

most of all, I don't like it when people are rude but pretend they're not. rudeness gets a hell of a lot ruder when a thick layer of condescension is added on top. I'm rude sometimes, but I admit it. I feel I owe the person I'm talking to at least that. I mean if you're going to be a dick, own it. Don't coward away from it afterwards.

To me nettiquette is just like etiquette in the physical world.

When someone goes out of their way to be nasty about a grammar mistake. I'm posting on a message board's forum, I'm not writing an English paper.

Spelling and grammar mistakes. It irks me a lot when I find them in my own posts because I didn't take the time to type slower or read it over, and then I can't edit them and my errors are immortalised. Horror!

I also hate people who overuse CAPS. It's fine in some occasions, like sudden exclamations, for, say, Dr Horrible 2. But don't type like THIS. Type like this. Italics, people. Or bold. Or underlined. Just NOT THIS.

Also, on a bunch of forums I've been on I've come across members who will do anything for attention.

Yes! And over-sharing! Sometimes the rest of us just do not need to know!

And copycats!...And then a little bit later the EXACT same thing but this time they didn't leave our board they just set up their own version...complete with all our forum descriptions copied and pasted over to theirs. RUDE.

I feel your pain. If we had a nickel for every time that happened to us, we would have the best hosting money can buy 😉
