Internet Etiquette

I was going to respond to this before, but I was on my phone and it wouldn't quote... I'm confused as to what you mean. I go out of my way to be blunt. Because to me "to put it bluntly," "to be quite frank," and "in all honesty" are synonyms. And in all honesty... Honesty is really important. When you're discussing something online, I really despise it when people aren't completely honest about what they're feeling. Being blunt is just getting down to business of your point and cutting the bullshit away. Going out of your way to say things bluntly isn't the same thing as going out of your way to be aggravating. To me, it's going out of your way to be NOT aggravating.

There's a huge difference between being honest and being blunt with it. You can speak your mind without coming across in a way that makes people not want to continue the conversation. If someone is unnecessarily blunt then chances are I either don't respond nicely or I don't respond at all. I don't like it when people are overly nice either, has to be a balance in tone for me.

Internet etiquette to me is just having manners. Just because you're online doesn't mean you have free reign to treat people differently to what you would in real life.

What niggles me is when people jump on you opinion as if you've stated it's fact. If you don't like an opinion fine but you don't have to belittle someone because of it. I don't like people who argue for the sake of arguing. And finally those that think because they're not face to face they can speak however they want to another person. We're all adults and human beings at the end of the day we ought to have respect for each other.

Considering we've got plenty of members below the ago of 18 and even had some becoming members before they get into their teens I'm not sure we're all adults. ;) Don't take it the wrong way. I do agree with the sentiment.
How do you overdo being nice? lol 😀
Maybe not the best choice of words. But as seen as posts before this one people can find others overly nice to an annoying degree.

I hate it when people overdo niceness. When someone's so nice that they're never rude... it gets irritating. it's like they're not human. It's like that person at work or school you literally NEVER see without a smile on their face. And their tone of voice is ALWAYS chipper. It's like "you can't be happy/nice all the time. Eventually you've got to be in a bad mood. you've got to snap." It makes you feel bad about your own bad moods/times you've snapped. It's really not fun to feel guilt about being human because someone else is strangely better than human.
Smiling has nothing to do with being nice if you ask me. It's about being happy.

No one is happy or nice all the time. They might just not show those sides around you. Some people are nice and happy a lot though. Should or shouldn't they be allowed to be themselves?

Completely honest about how they're feeling? So it's ok to say that you think people are idiots for thinking a certain way if that's how you feel? Just curious because I myself don't see the point of that. If a person is fat or ugly in your (general sense) opinion how often should you tell this person this? After all, you're just speaking the truth of what you're feeling. Maybe I'm misunderstanding.

I'm not going to censor myself for you. I don't live my life for you, I live it for me. If you're so offended by the way I speak/type, don't listen to me/read my posts.
Yet you're censoring yourself here, at school or at work?

I don't think it's something to feel bad about - unless it's not genuine ;) :)
A lot of people tell me all the time it's immature and childish and rude and whatnot... and a lot of people say things like you just did "some people are offended by that..." and I respond to all of them the same way: I do not care. I'm sorry that you're offended by the way I speak, but I'm offended by your offense. I'm not going to censor myself for you. I don't live my life for you, I live it for me. If you're so offended by the way I speak/type, don't listen to me/read my posts.

Without going into anything else, I will say: Which is why I don't. 🙂

That's fair

I know, I was making a comparison. It's a similar situation to me. Overly happy people and overly nice people.

Yeah. I'm not saying they shouldn't. I was elaborating on a point that it is possible. And sometimes being too nice all the time can make others feel uncomfortable. Being crabby and blunt like I am can make others uncomfortable too. So it's not that they shouldn't be that way, it's just what is.

You shouldn't tell someone "Hey, I think you're ugly." Not because it's blunt, but because it's rude to just go up to someone and start spewing out insults. I do think it's ok to say you think people are being stupid for thinking a certain way. I think people who are homophobes are idiots for thinking that way, and I'll never turn back on that. But that's not the point of what I was getting at. What I meant was if you're having a discussion with someone online, you have to be completely honest about what you're feeling or else the discussion will either become circular or one person will end up getting annoyed because there's nothing there to work with. BS isn't fun when you're having a serious discussion. For example, I don't want to have a discussion with someone in which they keep telling me "now, I respect your opinion but..." Just say what you need to say. If you think my opinion's stupid, say it.

It's an unpopular opinion, but I respect everyone as an individual with different life experiences and thought processes that are as valid as mine... but I also feel I reserve the right to tell someone their opinion is stupid if I think so. And I think other people reserve the same right for me.

Now I'm not going to try to make that how this board works, because it's not how this board works. And I'm not going to make it how life works, 'cause it's not how life works. But it is irritating to me that it's not.

Yet you're censoring yourself here, at school or at work?
I have to. **** is censored on this board. If I were to curse with the other words as much as I use them in my every day speech, I'd be kicked off the board. At school, I'd be suspended and at work I'd be fired. I don't censor myself because I'm choosing to for other people, I do it because I'm forced to by other people.

You're using blunt as a synonym for rude.. but that's not what it means. Being blunt just means you say what you need to say without beating around any sort of bush. It means you get to the bottom line and that's it. And yes, part of that is you're not too concerned about others' feelings... but the rest of it is you're being completely honest. Being consciously blunt is not the same thing as being consciously rude. It's not like you sit there and say "how can I phrase this in the way that is the ruddest?" It's just "here is what I think." The blunt opinion can be rude in nature, but the act of being blunt isn't rude. Because a blunt opinion can also be nice in nature.

Let's agree to disagree, I can't be bothered to argue.

But don't you think it's important to consider the feelings of others when interacting with them (from an internet etiquette point of view)? Isn't it more important that everyone can read your ideas and be comfortable interacting with you than you get to say the f word? I say it all the time, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest to not use it in writing, so that everyone can enjoy the board.

Voiced what I was thinking.

I mean, there are some times where if i was having a casual conversation with my friends, I'd use it but if I'm having a serious discussion I'll take it out... but I don't like doing it. I get why there is censorship on the board, and i don't disagree with the fact that there is... but just because I see the reasons behind it doesn't mean it never annoys me.

I'm another one of those that has as a pet peeve spelling and grammar mistakes (we all make them though... and I get super frustrated when my own posts have some silly typo).
For me though it's because I think the written language is really important, I don't write the way I speak usually because when speaking I'm a lot more prone to slang/colloquialisms, but when writing I like for it to be really clear most of the time (not really in the chat though but when posting). I'm a bit weird when it comes to this though, I think it stems back to school and the rigorous training we had there about how we had to write and appreciate language, especially when we had to practice writing mandates.

Rudeness also gets to me... go figure 😉

Haha I know what you mean. My mom's a teacher so I feel like that has something to do with my grammar nazi-ish ways. However, I will totally look past spelling/grammar errors if English isn't someone's first language. I mean, I won't tell someone when they make a mistake, publicly, because that's a bit rude, but if I know that you're new to the English language, I just stop noticing or really caring about the mistakes. It does, however, annoy me when someone that I know is articulate, chooses to type like an absolute moron. Grr. For instance, when people add unnecessary Z's and crap to the end of words.

I don't think that's so much etiquette as it is just how people are. They just might not like being rude! I know lots of people who would rather say nothing if they have nothing nice to say and I think that's cool! I don't think it's really something people can change on the internet 'cause it's just how they roll! I wouldn't say they're 'better than human', they just might not be comfortable letting that other side out.

I agree. 110%. In real life...I am the most sarcastic person on the planet. Most people assume that I am a total bitca. I am also very opinionated. If you say something I disagree with, I'm down for a semi-heated discussion. However, I try not to be rude. It's just unnecessary. I'm not chipper all the time, I disagree with opinions pretty often on here, but there is a way to do it in a nice way. Some people are clearly being phony with their "niceness" but if it's clearly genuine, what's the issue? If someone's cheerfulness makes you feel guilty, well that's your problem. When I see people who never stop smiling, who are happy 24/7...I worry about them. They're holding their emotions in. People think I'm too patient. Oh how I am not. I just try to hold my...aggravation in.

It's not healthy. Ugh.
