I tried to find a thread that already covered this specific topic, I couldn't. If this needs to be moved and/or altered, please do so.

I just finished watching the epp, Into the Woods (I think that was the title) and was surprised by a few things.

First of all I really thought the whole thing with Riley visiting the vampires chicks was kinda.....erotic?! I understand why that is not right and why Buffy was so upset-but then again I think we all know Buffy's complete heart was never with Riley. I understand his motives for inititating that sort of behavior. I think they played on the whole dark, sinful and delicious aspect of vampires with this situation.

Second of all, I really like Riley's character on the show, even when he was only a love interest to Buffy. I know that there are many who don't/didn't, but I always rooted for the guy. When I heard about him leaving, I thought that when I watched this epp I would of been devestated. I wasn't. I was totally okay with his departure, which made me realize that I either didn't like his character that much or maybe I was just really getting in to the idea of Spike and Buffy!?! Hmm....I just think that a lot happened in this epp. Especially the end with Xander and Anya. I wanted to hear everybody's input and ideas, so if you feel like sharing, please do so!

No one can blame Riley for leaving... he was feeling neglected because Buffy was distracted and not filling him in on things. He had a reason to leave and it was a good reason. I was happy Riley was leaving 'cause I was so sick and tired of him and B/R was sooooo boring. I know a lot of 'Buffy' fans disliked Riley 'cause he "whined" about Buffy not confiding in him, but in fact, Buffy doing that was a perfect catalyst for his departure. How would you feel if your boyfriend or girlfriend wasn't telling you certain things?

I didn't like him in season for, so naturally when I heared he was leaving I was all cheerful, but as the episode closed in, I began to feel a little sorry for him, and I began to dislike Buffy more and more. I still feel sorry for him, but it's great to see that he moved on. I really like him in Older and Farther Away.

I actually did feel, throughout Season 5, very sorry for Riley, it wasnt TOTALLY obvious, but you could tell sometimes.
I dont think Buffy was pushing him away, he was just getting the wrong message.
However, in Into the Woods, I fell more on Buffy's side, becuase, Riley and Xander seemed against her, and when she tries to get him back at the end, its very emotional!

Ya know, I thought that was kinda sad. It seemed as if it suddenly hit her...the thought of losing him was very powerful. It reminded me a lot of that remake movie that Madonna stars in. I can't remember the title, but it was directed by Guy Ritchie. (I have no idea who did the original) The final scene of that movie was like the final scene of the epp.....the helicopter and everything. I remember balling during that movie ending....sorry totally off subject-it just remined me a lot of it.

Awwww...Chasity...such a sweetheart...
When I first saw that episode I was happy because I just couldn't stand Riley. But as I have gone back and watched season four as a whole I realized that the guy was underated. I picked up on a lot more the second time around and I was actually a little sad when he left...but it's all good now. I didn't cry...CHAS!!! 😛 You're too cute...

It wasent as sad as I'd imagined it being, maybe because that was only the 5th time i'd seen him on screen 😀 I thoght wen I saw the previews that he was cheating as well but it was only a vamp biting, but it was still very emotianal.
I think Xanders talk to buffy was very well done and then she ran to him that was so sad that he didnt see her, it must have made her feel really helpless.

You have to amitted, we felt sorry for the guy. We know since 5.03 The Replacement that Buffy and Riley is have their problems. Remember at the end when Xander and Riley was talking, "Hey, I'm well aware of how lucky I am. Like, lottery lucky. Buffy's like nobody else in the world. When I'm with her it's like ... it's like I'm split in two. Half of me is just ... on fire, going crazy if I'm not touching her. The other half ... is so still and peaceful ... just perfectly content. Just knows: this is the one. But she doesn't love me." Come to think up it, we was getting hints in 5.01 Buffy vs. Dracula. So, when you said It was like Xander and Riley was against her. They was right about it, they was imploding. She should have at least see a little hint. I love Riley in season four, he was nice. I do kind of miss him, Xander needs a guy friend. 🙂

Now the Xander/Anya part. Just pain beautiful. It was sweet, caring, and just wow! I started to cry at the scene. I am a love warshipper. 😀

Well it was cheating. In fact, it was worse than cheating. It's like if your long-term S/O were to go outside your relationship to fulfill emotional needs with someone else, it's worse than if it was just a physical thing. A bigger betrayal. I think that's what they were trying to get at with the sort of erotic scene, letting the vamps drink him requires a certain amount of....trust, or letting go...and this was a huge betrayal.

I'm sorry, I liked Riley from pretty much the first time i saw him,
I thought he played his character well. Riley was so conflicted, he knew buffy didn't love him. But he loved her so much he couldn't leave her. And when she became so self involved with all of her problems, he started slipping away. In " Into the Woods" Riley practically begged her to give him a reason to stay.
When she refused to be rational he left. She got to the woods a little to late, and I can safely say It was the first and pretty much only time, that I truly wanted someone to kick Buffy's booty, and knock some sense into her
