Is Joss whedon racist towards the English?

I agree with the 'Joss isn't racist' standpoint, but this conversation reminds me of the line from Pangs that people conveniantly didn't mention and was also really funny. I'm paraphrasing here:

BUFFY: They're Native Americans, not 'Indians'.

GILES: I guess I'm behind on all the terminology. I still can't stop wanting to call you lot 'bloody colonials'.

I guess that isn't exactly 'racist' against the English, but more against the Americans ... Ih, it doesn't matter anyway. Joss isn't racist. 😛

I dont think joss is racist

hi, i started this thread and i dont think joss is racist either, my arguement was not my own it was my mates, he reckons joss hates english or is 2 patriotic, i dont think hes racist so i told him what you ll said. he said the only reason there are english characters is because its easir to find a reason to call englsih people

With the first Anya quote. If Joss was racist to the French, Xander wouldn't have told Anya to stop saying that.

On thing you have remember with a Whedon show you can turn any comment into a comment to support your claim. You might as well said that Whedon was racist to chicken.

lol i'll tell my friend what you said it'll either make him laugh or mad

I don't think Joss was racist w/ the English. The whole thing w/ Giles is just to add to the humor. I don't think he hates the english or anything...

Nah, Joss isn't racist to the English. Any stereotypical moments are done fondly. And just because Anya doesn't seem to like the French, doesn't mean Joss doesn't. If you were to make a case about Irish stereotypes (Drunken wannabe-charmers) maybe... but its not a stereotype if its true, right? 😛

I think many more potentials died than were shown, we only saw thos because we had had a chance to get to know them earlier in the sieres, so it would hav a greater affect on the viewers.

Did anyone else notice that three out of two of the main characters who where potentials died...
Umm. you realize that 3/2 means more english characters died than there were total deaths, right? should it be 2/3?

Joss isn't racist toward the english. Why would he have put them on a high level, such as slayers and the council, if he was racist. At first I thought you mean't English, like us canadians. What got me upset is, the fact that they didn't mention a canadian slayer.Even in the buffy fanfiction books, there's always an american slayer, european, Chinese, or Japanese. They always use the same countries such as france, england, america...They never use the Philipines, or Canada.

This is only hazily remembered, but wasn't Buffy's predecessor part Filipino? Also, maybe vamps don't like the odd sunlight hours up too far north? Ooh, I think I'll go and read 30 Days of Night...

Buffy's predecessor was not mentioned or seen on tv.Books such as The Book of Fours, and Tales of The slayer vol 1, are fanfics.Joss whedon, and his crew of writers such as Jane, had nothing to do with it.The buffy fanfic writers, just publish their own buffy stories. Those stories aren't part of the buffyverse, they are just based on the buffyverse. The writers just wanted to share their stories to the fans, by publishing it, and that way they get money too. That predecessor from the book of 4s is not buffy's real predecessor, she was just part of the writer's story.Comics such as Tales of the vampire, and tales of the slayer, are all written by joss and his crew. Those stories are part of the buffyverse. And that fanfic slayer, that was Buffy's predecessor isn't filipino.I have the book. And she moved to different places such as Japan, that's why.

So I read through this whole silly thread and I have two things to say. The first, obviously, I do not think that Joss is racist towards anyone for all the reasons that have been said before I wondered onto the thread.

The second thing, is anyone else bothered by the fact that the original post said that the only reason Kennedy wasn't killed was because she was Willow's b****?

This bothers me very much, both as a crazed BtVS fan and as an ardent feminist.

I realize that, most likely, it wasn't meant to be offensive so I won't make a bigger deal out of it. Still, next time, please think more carefully about what you call people, even fictional characters.

Frankly, I'm amazed I've been able to keep my cool enough to write this reply.

I grok your vibe Cannon_Fodder. The original post was just plain stupid. I mean Kennedy wasn't even British. What was his point?

Personally, the idiocy of the post didn't step on the toes of any of my personal sacred issues, so I was allowed the luxury of laughing at it, but I can see how a feminist might be offended by it.

There's hope for the board though. The poster has since been banned on an unrelated matter. Sooner or later that kind of offensive, irrational attitude was bound to land some place where it couldn't be tolerated. So don't give up on the rest of us just yet, OK?

Well said nerdy-boy ("grok your vibe"?)
Well, while everyone (okay, almost everyone) has come up with great examples and arguments, my question is since when are race and nationality the same thing?

I was thinking exactly the same thing as I read this thread! Thanks for saying it!

Grok. Hehe. I'm still amazed when someone "quotes" Stranger in a Strange Land. Thanks.

As a sidenote, is it bad of me to be glad that the original poster has been banned? Right then, must find some sort of moral high ground, lol. Don't worry, not giving up on the rest of you. Love this place.

Not after what he did, read the "Serious Complaint" thread in the Angel Investigations forum.

okay, this is a really bad topic. Joss himself has lived in England. And he has said, and i quote, "the idea of being being British was extremelly appealing."
