Is marriage an outdated concept?

Can't say that I get pestered with questions about why I'm not married.
Not getting married is not an issue here (and being a guy helps too I guess)

But not being in a relationship, not having kids and not having a house/garden seems to mean (for some anyway) that I must have unlimited time to either work extra or help out friends and family.

I've made an active choice to be single without kids so I can spend more time with my hobbies. Not so I can spend more time helping others.
Not that I don't want to help at times. It's just that I don't think I should need to do it more than those with families.

They have made their choice on how they want to spend their precious spare time, fixing the house, taking care of the kids etc.
My choice might be different but just as valid imho.

hit the nail on the head.
Plenty of people still want to get married, but why do they want to get married? Is it because of religious values, maybe it is because of insurance companies who won't pay up unless a couple are married.
Less people get married each generation because the parents do not respect church values. Many gay females and gay males want to get married but do they want to get married because of the church or the insurance companies?
Anyone remember the film The Man Who Sued God. (twas made in Australia)

I guess marriage as a concept has evolved somewhat. I don't think it's seen as important nowadays, considering the ease at which people get divorces. Marriage shouldn't be a frivolous decision. 😵

To be honest, I've never thought about weddings or marriage in the context of myself. I didn't imagine my perfect wedding as a child lol, not at all. I was actually speaking to a woman today who was genuinely stressed and worried about her money because both her daughters were getting married in the same year and it was tens of thousands of pounds. Um how about not spend that money? No one is forcing you to. It's at that point of ridiculousness that I feel like it's a popularity and money competition. It's supposed to be about your partner, not a 'wedding day'.

Agreed 100%!

See, whilst my parents did make a contribution to our wedding, I would never have insisted they do so. In fact, I said I'd rather they didn't and kept the money in their savings!

They insisted they wanted to stick with tradition and said basically I'd be offending them by not accepting it as a gift - so to be honest although it was gratefully received, I did feel super bad about it.

Basically, if you're paying for your own wedding you can spend what you like. If my folks had paid for it all, it would have been the smallest, most frugal wedding ever, because I wouldn't want to burden them with that excess cost.

Exactly. It'd be nice if more people had that attitude! Like your parents paid for everything when you were a child already, give them a break :p
