So somehow last night I managed to misplace my phone, and although I've looked all over for it it's yet to turn up. So that means all day today I have been phone less. Ok so I use my phone as a clock in the morning, I never oversleep but I do like to know the time. Apart from the time issue this morning, trying to read my watch I haven't actually missed my phone, no constant notifications going off, no emails, that I don't want, to get rid of.
I've realised that it's actually easier than I thought to go without my phone. Yes ok so people couldn't contact me, and I couldn't contact them either, given that I can barely remember my own house phone number and I don't have any written down.

I'm due for a phone upgrade soon, and I'm actually thinking of getting a non smartphone. Just being able to text and call people when needed, like I used to be able to do. I have missed using messenger today though, so I'm not sure.

Now I'm back home I keep finding myself looking around for my phone, even though I'm sat here on the laptop. It's a really weird feeling.

Does anyone not have a smartphone?
 
I could not go through the day without mine. It would be a disaster. I do far too much with it. But I am always using it for work, so that's a different matter.

I had thought of a dumbphone before but after discovering the joys of Fi, I can't imagine never NOT having a smartphone now. I mean, my phone bill is $25 a month and I use it all the time. You cant even get a dumbphone for that. Plus, it's honestly been the best phone I ever had and the now with the best service plan... I wont ever change I don't think.
 
My brother has an old flip phone and he's totally content with it. I just know for me, having a smartphone is something I've grown so accustomed to that I'm not sure I could ever downgrade again. I enjoy being able to pull my phone out while on lunch at work and check these boards, or social media. I'm not addicted to it like some are though. The one thing that bothers me is people going out together, like for lunch, and both people just sitting there on their phones. I will never be that type lol. Social interaction face to face is more important than social media, but smartphone's definitely make life more convenient for a lot of things.
 
I had a smartphone for awhile and went back to my old flip phone. I don't text, I don't surf the net on my phone, I don't play games, watch movies, listen to music, or read books on my phone, so all of that is just, for me, a waste. All that I use my phone for is making and receiving calls. I have a plain old Samsung Rugby 3, and I'm perfectly content with it.

Besides which, I simply don't like the idea of having a phone that's smarter than I am.
 
I have a basic phone that I make and receive calls on because it's reliable and I'll never break it! But then I have a smartphone to use the internet and play on lol it's really annoying to do anything other than work on a laptop.
But the happy middle ground is a tablet.
 
I have the iPhone SE but I've broke the charger for
it. I don't worry about phones anymore and just use the fire tablet. I don't have many people to contact anyway!🙂
 
If I'm not on my phone for an hour it's because I'm asleep. I use it a ton for school, whether that's research, collaborating with people on assignments, or actually doing assignments because almost all of our work is done with google drive and canvas. Add to all that social media, sports, and actually calling and texting people, and, well if I lost my phone I'd be typing air because I didn't know what to do with my thumbs.

(you weren't in Petersfield were you? 😵 😉 ) I actually found a phone in town on Sunday morning....very wet as it had been out in the rain all night & the screen was cracked.



As for my phone....I resisted getting a smart phone for a while, but in the end gave in & got one. I don't play games or use many Aps. I just use it for Facebook & access to the net when I'm out & about.
 
I think a dumbphone is a great idea

I should have got a dumbphone after my iphone got activation locked. I am considering it still as I cant recieve texts or use messenger well on this one anyway. My laptop is always on, but right now Im using the phone cos im sat drinkin beer - new level laziness for me.

I always use my camera to take pics of flowers and notices when I am out, but since this phone is a cheapy, the camera quality is bad and its not really been worth taking photos with it. I cant post on instagram on the laptop but I have a tablet somewhere. The camera quality is similar. Actually thats a good idea, I wonder if I could return this phone since its not recieving SMS and get my money back. I lost all of my contacts in the iphone so its not like I am losing more than I already did on that damn i-thing.

I would go without a phone all together but I bushwalk and drive long distances.
 
If ever I wanted to dumb down my phone I would get a CAT phone or something similar. Had thought about one for awhile. Granted, they are still a smartphone per se, but not nearly as smart as some of them.

I'd never heard of them but they look perfect for me.
I always joke that if I'm missing and people have to figure out whether I was kidnapped or ran away, all they have to do is check my apartment; if they find my smokes and MP3 player, then I was kidnapped, if they're missing, I left on my own. But if they find my phone? Dude, I'm always forgetting to take it with me, or leaving it on my bed in the morning, or forget to charge it. My phone is, like, my least important object that I own and I could easily live without it.

I only got a smartphone in the first place - mine's HTC and it's 7 years old - because I was a student at the time and all my classmates had one and convinced me that it was easier 'in this day and age'. I totally don't use it for anything beyond calls and texts and I rarely get phone calls or text messages anyway.

I do find it odd how times have changed. Last year, my sister wouldn't pick up her phone and, within 20 minutes, there was a panic in my family. My dad drove out to her house, my mom was ready to dial 911, just in case, my sister's in-laws were on standby and trying to reach my brother-in-law. An hour after the panic began, my dad waiting out in front of her house, my sister came walking up; she'd gone for a walk and just forgotten to bring her phone. 15 years ago, no one would have panicked, not back in the stationary phone days. It's kinda funny, if you think about it 🙂

I have a dumb phone to take to gigs with me because I don't want to smash up my smartphone. I use my phone much more like a PC than a phone so I've got no intention of going back to the old days.

I wish it was a bit easier to find a phone a bit more tailored to my liking though. I want a phone that won't lag so look at the premium end but have no need for a professional grade camera etc.
 
Apparently I'm dangerously out of the loop here - what exactly is a dumb phone? Like does that just include all phones that aren't smart phones, like an old Nokia, or is it something else?

Yeah we just mean phones you use for calls and texts, maybe a camera. Smartphone generally means capable of using the internet (practically).
 
Personally I would miss it a lot.

Being able to call and message people is secondary. I don't do that very often.
It's all the other abilities that makes it worth carrying around all day.

Would especially miss the GPS, the ability to write notes and of course checking stuff on the internet.

I feel so stupid somehow when I do that though.
Have never been able to use voice assistants either for the same reason.

Should try and get over that... lol

Oh my word! I felt like a total ass at first and made fun of people for using the voice assistant but DAYUM when you get used to it, it's really convenient. You should try. (I never do it in public though, mostly in the car)

The voice assistant is super handy, I've only been using it a couple weeks and I love it! So maybe I would miss a smart phone. I also realised that I use maps a lot, I would legit be lost without that.

I certainly need a good camera for bunny exploiting

This has been quite an interesting thread!
