I thought I'd start this thread as no one else has on the board.

For those of you who don't have a clue of what I'm talking about, they are a series of paranormal mystery books written by Jim Butcher. Thee central character fights supernatual foes by the use of his brains, smart-arse mouth, pretty decent street fighting ability, and his use of magic. The name of the guy is Harry Dresden. He's a wizard , the only openly practicing one (at least in Chicago), he's in the yellow pages under Wizards.

So how does James Marsters come in ? Well, he has already narrated the first two books ( Storm Front and Fool Moon). And you probably can guess that he was spectacular. He fully nailed the character of Harry , his voice in a lower register than either his "real" voice or Spike's, and he has so much talent to spare that he gave special and appropriate voices to all of the characters. ( you can download free sound clips at the Buzzy Multimedia site to get a feel for how he handles it )

The Desden Files have been optioned for tv and/or movies. Guess who I would like to see as the star ? 😉 I'm addicted I tell you. And when Angel ends I would love to see him in a series of his own. A cool one.

PS Harry wears a trenchcoat. He also wears bizarre t-shirt, cowboy boots, and jeans.

James Marsters , Harry Dresden ~ a perfect fit :: fantom
Magic is created by life, and most of all by the awareness, intelligence, and emotions of a human being. - Storm Front

Good to see this thread started here! 🙂 I'm a big JB/HD fan too; I actually was a fan of the books before JM did the audiobooks. The audiobooks just sort of cemented my devotion to the books and JM! 😀

As a fyi regarding the Harry Dresden Campaign (tv/movie deal, preferably with James as Harry, IMHO):

Today, on JB's list (in response to a question by a member, who posted that "www.jim-butcher.com no longer has an announcement about a possible TV show" and wondered what that meant) Jim Butcher replied:

So would I! 🙂
Jim
PS--There's no need for the big email campaign at this point. We are in a Dr. Suessian Waiting Place (TM) and as soon as we're not, I'll tell everybody. -j-

Yes I've heard many people want him to star in this movie/show. I think it would be really great for him to be the main character on a show. It would be good for his career.

I have honoustly never heard of this thing, but it's good that they get popular with other things too, might get more ppl to watch and get hooked to Angel.

Hi,
Don't know if you checked out the link or not, but the Dresden Files books are really cool! I love this series, and Harry Dresdend is a fun character! 🙂 If you like reading sci-fi/fantasy, this is a good series to read. A lot of people who like Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series (lots of vamps and werewolves, etc) like these books too. The author's web site is http://www.jim-butcher.com/ where you can find out about the books. You can even download audioclips from the first 2 books, which James Marsters did as audiobooks! 😀

Update on Pilot

This is an update on the TV Pilot project from Jim's list today; it's being reposted with his blessings. I have "bolded" his comments about James. (FYI-- he's referring to the Marsters Mobsters fan group in his comment about James because of the well-organized campaign that the Mobsters have to get James in the role of Harry/Erik. 🙂 The forum site is at:

Cindy

Hey all!
Just wanted to drop through and give you what information I can share about the upcoming potential project.

(Potential because it could still get the rug pulled out from under it, as well as possibly being greenlighted.)

You already know from the press release that Morgan Gendel is working with Lion's Gate Films and Nick Cage's Saturn Films to put the production together. He is also being joined in the writing/producing by Tony Peckham, whose most recent work is about to air on SciFi in the miniseries, 5 Days to Midnight. Morgan's had a ton of experience both in science fiction (like TNG and DS9 and Spider Man) and in crime drama (Law and Order, hello) so I remain strongly positive about the potential for the show in his hands. He's read all the books (including an early galley of book 6), and I think He Gets It. That's a very reassuring thought, to me anyway.

That said, I am not going to be doing any of the writing, at least for the near future. This comes as something of both a disappointment and a relief. I'm working my tail off on upcoming deadlines as it is. If I tried to add another, oh, twenty two hundred pages of copy (the scripts for a season of TV series) to my current 1100 pages (a Dresden book and an Alera book) I think I'd probably blow up like a balloon and explode. But not until after I got it all done and the bills were paid.

I'm disappointed that I'm not going to be doing a little more hands-on contributions to the show, but if I really wanted it all that much I should probably go out there and produce my own TV show. Since that seems like way too much work--you know, starting an entry level career, breaking into a whole 'nother business--I'm going to have to be happy with being a consultant to Morgan, and letting him pick which of my ideas are actually doable and which are insane while NOT forcing him to correct the mistakes of a newbie script writer who thinks he knows everything.

I can live with that.

The show itself is very likely to bear something of a passing resemblance to the Dresden books. Think of it in the same way that the X-Men movies bear only a slight resemblance to any of the three or four cartoons, which only bear a vague resemblance to the actual comic books. There are going to be most of the same pieces of story, but they might be put together in a very different fashion than the novels. We'll have to see how things pan out, but for those purists that wanted to see page go to screen unchanged, brace yourself for disappointments. I'll find out more about possible changes as quickly as I can corner anyone who might know and torture it out of them, and then come kibitz to the list.

Actually, I think it's going to be sort of neat to see how things change. The medium has so many demands on it (both practical and political and economic) that a novelist just doesn't need to worry about. It's going to be a real creative challenge to carry the best of the books over to the screen. Darn it, I want to see already!

I have done some talking with various peoples involved, and have managed to pin down rough estimates as to when things are going to get done. If the script gets the go-ahead from the network, it'll get written (and rewritten) more or less over the summer. Budget approval and the actual expenditure of money for doing the production will most likely happen sometime in the autumn of 04--which will be when the casting will get done. Until then, there's no way to guess at whom they're going to be able to afford and who they're going to be looking at.

(Sorry, Mobsters. At this time, I have no word on if anyone is looking at James, if anyone wants to look at James, or indeed if James is even terribly interested in the project. At this time there is no word at all about anyone at all, castingwise.)

If all of that that happens in the fall, the actual shooting will get done over the winter and/or early spring, and post production will take place after that to have the whole shebang ready to go late the next autumn (of 05) or early the next spring (in 06).

Keep in mind, that these are educated guesses as far as timing goes. GUESSES. It might happen just like that. On the other hand, the network could decide that they want it for THIS autumn/winter, and greenlight the whole thing through to get done before summer 04 is out. OR, they could decide it was a bad idea from the get-go and pull the rug out from under it at virtually any point before the money has been committed. There are simply too many variables to predict anything with perfect accuracy.

But, there you go. Now you guys know more or less what I know. I'll share more information as soon as I am able to swindle it out of the people who have it.

Jim

JM's comments in Berlin about HD

You may have read this in her report on the BBB or MTS, but the following was posted by Estepheia in her report from James' Q&A session in Berlin on May 8th; she graciously said that I could share it with other HD fans. 🙂

"I asked him about the possibility of him doing a third Jim Butcher audiobook and he nodded vigorously (which I take to mean that yes, he'd do one if asked) and about his chances of playing Harry Dresden. He agreed that Jim Butcher wants him (he looked tickled pink about that fact) and said that it sounds like the right kind of role for him and that he would like to audition for it. He mentioned that Nick Cage is doing it, and that nobody approached him yet."

So that means"”send more cards! Send faxes, whatever! 😀

Oh that would be great. There are so many possibilities for James now! THanks for the info Cindy🙂

And the target for those post cards and faxes should be Saturn Films in general and Nicolas Cage in particular. For those wanting to help (and if you are a fan how can you not want to help) you can find postcards as well as addresses if you visit the marsters-mobsters.com board.

It may be in another thread, but I wanted to be sure that everyone caught that in several reports from the London event, James is quoted as saying that he DOES have an audition for the role of Harry/Erik for the TV pilot movie when he gets back to Hollywood! Several people who attended commented that he added that, though he would be auditioning, having an audition in Hollywood didn't mean "jack****". I'm just excited that he does have an audition scheduled; that's a step in the right direction, IMO. 😀

It appears that James has plans to do the third book in the Dresden Files series ( Grave Peril ). Maybe that will tide us over till the Dresden pilot is shown and then maybe the Dresden Files series ::bat:: Wish I could be a fly on the wall at his audition. How they could pick anyone else would be beyond my understanding.

I agree! It's difficult to imagine anyone else in the role of Harry/Erik.

I know that he's been saying that he would like to do the audiobook of Grave Peril, and I'm glad that it's getting close to being official that he will do it. 🙂

You've probably already read it elsewhere, but the plan is for James to record the audiobook version of Grave Peril (the 3rd Dresden Files' book) some time in August. Also, I thought to ask and found out that the wonderful ladies at Buzzy Multimedia hope to have the audiobook ready for release in time for Christmas or even a little earlier! 😀

So, I know what I want Santa to bring me! ::love::

ETA: As you've read in other threads here, James is scheduled to record Grave Peril in September rather than this month. Cross your fingers and toes that it will still be released in time for the holidays! (That's the plan, but it may be tight...)

Grave Peril Recording

Slight change: James will be recording Grave Peril in September rather than August. The Buzzy Multimedia ladies, Joy and June, still hope for a release in time for the holidays. It's already on my Christmas list, for sure, along with Ben Browder (John Crichton from Farscape) narrating Alan Dean Foster's book Interlopers. 😀
