Joss Whedon's leaked Wonder Woman script

I wish Joss did not use the word feminism so often. Buffy is what it is, which is a show about how chicks with super powers. Despite its many virtues, Buffy is not textbook feminism. The show even takes a surprising amount of stabs at things like Willow's mother's academic feminism and the new age feminism of the college Wicca group.

Could this have been written by Joss, though? I thought Marti Noxon had to work hard to convince Whedon to get a single woman with curves on Buffy.
 
I don't really have anything to say about this except that no one knows if this was the actual script Joss came up with (another problem with the internet these things are easier to fake) or if it was what he would have submitted. And the other thing to say is that to really judge it you would have to see the film itself, for proper context. Joss has done far more good things for women on the small and big screen than he has bad. But nobody's perfect. This is a bit of a non-story IMO.
 
Regardless of whether this is true or not, I don't think Joss was the right person to write WW. And if this is true, it proves that he wasn't right. I think one of the biggest reason so many people are raving about WW right now is because it was directed to present a movie about a woman superhero that would not be seen through the male gaze. This is not something that we would have witnessed with a Whedon version, at least not by the sound of it.
 
There's a lot of Joss-hate going around, I don't know if this is Joss' script or a fake one just to frame Joss. I agree with @Mr Trick that Joss needs to try something new.

The whole comic movie genre needs to die, said the person who hasn't seen a single Avengers movie, but who saw Batman v. Superman and thought it was awful compared to Burton's Batman and the Crow.

I'm not emotionally invested in this WW, but I do wonder, if they decided to be more like the UK (where they can have many "plain looking" main characters that would never be allowed as a main character in something made by those who live in Hollywood or NYC, at least not the good guys--and of course the hot bad guys will become heartthrobs to the public all too easy despite being bad), would it hurt the marketability and public appeal? (Honest question, I honestly don't know.)

Wouldn't go that far. There have been some good ones. There's just too many and I personal don't see the appeal of this shared universe stuff.

Still not seen that film, you've just given me the perfect excuse.
I'm not a big defender of Joss Whedon, but isn't this kind of the backlash you can expect if you are labeled, and label yourself, a feminist? Like the more you say you are something, the more people want to prove that you're not (by their standards).*

It's also easy to nit-pick. "Her body was curvaceous but taut" sounds exactly what something a studio wants to hear because they think the sexiness of the female lead is where a big part of the bank is. A script is never a one man effort, it goes through many hands, opinions and edits that the script writer may not particularly like.


*e.g. the more politicians claim to be actual human beings, the more I want to prove that they're all just big amphibians dressed in shiny human suits. Think about it.
 
Also I tend to think it is more people discribing Whedon as a feminist than him doing it himself. Sure he has talked about that aspect of Buffy, but in general I think its more what people have written or talked about in regards to him which has hyped him up as a feminist.

Hasn't Whedon himself given many, many speeches about feminism? Like actual speeches not just little interviews in front of cameras. I'm pretty sure I've seen that mentioned over the years.

However there were worse 'feminists' on his staff during the Buffy/Angel days. Like Marti Noxon, Tim Minear or Jane Espenson. But then I never thought of Joss as a feminist and to this day I don't have a clue why he has that street cred.

I also get the "loading tweet" with nothing else, save a bird icon of some sort. It happens a lot to me on this board, and I assume it's because I don't have twitter, and nothing is worth getting it so I shrug it off.

I'd say it's because he has written women as people flaws and all, have created female characters with at least some concerns other than men, and created some different types of female characters (like Buffy, Willow, Cordy, Zoe, Kaylee are all rather different individuals) and that, sadly, that has been considered groundbreaking.

Haha, that meme. What about Ripley, whom everyone talks about? Or Black Widow? Xena and Buffy on the little screen, etc... not to mention the original Wonder Woman series.
I still want to see the Wonder Woman movie though. 🙂
 
I agree. Its debatable whether Buffy for example is a feminist show. The reason I think it might be (and this applies to Angel too, though its always a bit murky to me what storylines Joss had a hand in on that show), is because it presents femininity in multiple forms and presents it as complex and progressive. To me its a bit problematic judging every female character on the basis of whether its a feminist character or not. That is insulting to females.
 
I'm guessing that this script was merely 'doctored' by Joss and a lot of the other stuff in another writer. It just doesn't read like something he waould write.
...Unless of course he was pitching it at a certain audience- producers.

I think Whedon's feminist cred comes from writing great, heroic, flawed three-dimentional characters that also happen to be female.
Probably comes from the fact that he's said that he finds the idea of a square-jawed male hero kinda boring so he writes the alternative.
