I just started my first year doing Computing at the UEA in England and have to say it's been well, awesome. I had some problems beforehand mentally but after freshers, getting to grips with my environment and meeting some rad individuals (also the penchant for the occasional moshpit, rargh! 😀) i think everything has settled down to a nice balance. If you're having a rough time, don't let it get you down AND don't rely on others to save yourself from having a crappy time. Go out, meet new folks however hard it maybe because i know i'd rather be going into a room knowing a few faces then knowing none at all.
As i'm staying in one of the more expensive dorms, i'm also not so confined to sharing stuff which i've found to actually be a pain now as i find myself going over to other dorms instead. My dorm jeeeuuuust has no life, everyone keeps to themselves and it's the neighbours making the noise instead of me! My advice to any freshers is to kick start things, be confident and make the sacrifice (HOWEVER HARD IT MAYBE) to share things and TALK! (choose friends wisely, be yourself, yada yada yada, you know the drill) Try to seem like your talking to old friends but don't be over-friendly friendly, LOL. One more thing, make your room YOUR room, make things feel like home and keep a schedule/rota of things to do. Oh, and BUDGET, lol. 😀
