Karma was my favorite feature and the main way i've been interacting on the board recently. So I feel really annoyed that it's gone. I have no idea why because I didn't see the drama... and quite frankly, I don't care. I mean... I know that it's taken away for a reason... and I'm not saying the mods shouldn't have done it. All I'm saying is I haven't seen any of this drama, and therefore, it's especially annoying that I don't have rep.

That said, I hope it comes back... because when message boards don't have a karma system it makes me sad and I end up using those boards less. I am a "karma slut" for a reason...

Please note: this post is not meant to step on anyone's toes or offend anyone... simply stating my sadness at the fact that this feature is disabled.
 
I think that it's ok for it to be gone for now. I just hope that the ones who abused of the feature grow up, so when you guys will enable it again it will be for good and this situation won't happen again 🙂
 
I think those of you who keep complaining about the feature being gone need to remember that this is a discussion board; not a karma board. The point of an online forum isn't to have all these cool bells and whistles for the members to use. A forum is for people to come together to discuss things... Not to come leave karma posts on everyone's posts. Of course karma is fun to use, as is the chat room, etc. but if you like or dislike a post why not just reply to the thread or post and say so an explain why? Isn't that why we're here? Cause if it's not why you're here then maybe some people need to go elsewhere to a forum that better fits their style, or create their own. Just sayin.
 
Just wanted to say that I get it, there was abuse of it, I saw it. I think it's a good idea and hopefully it's only temporary. If not, the discussions still live on. For what it's worth, I support the decision.
 
Look at the original post lads; this (at present) is a temporary measure. Karma is my favourite feature of this board, and it does inconvenience me not being able to avail of it at the moment (there is a Karma notification currently mocking me every time I log in 😉 ) but that is the point. Karma is a luxury on this board, and it was being abused. It doesn't really matter if you are aware of the problem or not, it still exists (I promise you the Mods know much more about this than we do-it's their job to know and I know they wouldn't do this without just cause. Plus, April 1st is a whole month away, so we can rule that out 😛). It's unfortunate that members who were using the function correctly have been put out by this, but I think we can survive for a little while without it. Especially if, when the function is returned, it is used correctly.
 
Just to clarify:

- It's NOT about giving negative rep. We stand by the policy that negative rep is just as valid as positive.

- If it were just one person or a couple times it wouldn't have come to this. Our normal course of business IS OF COURSE to contact people individually and delete inappropriate comments from posts (which is why many of you haven't seen them). It has been happening so frequently of late that enough became enough.

- This is an opportunity for people to remember to think before they post.

- As always, if you don't like the way we do things here at BB, you are free to leave at any time.
 
I'm with the mods on this (as if my opinion matters -hehehe).

I love that this board is so friendly. I love that trolling and nastiness is not allowed. I miss karma but trust the judgment of the mods.
 
This is terrible, I've never given negative karma. Here I am thinking this is the best board of all time, cause even when we disagree we could still be polite. I cant believe fellow Buffy-lovers could be so petty and childish. What a joke. The negative rep givers should be ashamed.

You can give negative karma without being a jerk about it, so it has nothing to do with that. I've seen positive karma given with a comment that was full of snark.

It's about rudeness, and giving negative rep doesn't make you rude unless you leave a nasty comment. It just means you don't agree.
 
I definitely miss the karma. I always find myself trying to use it on other boards and then remembering "Oh yeah, this board doesn't have it." Sometimes I like to read the discussion but don't have anything original to say, so karma helps me agree with someone without trying to come up with a post that isn't just repeating what someone else has said.

Example of a time that happened: Right now. I read this post and was like "yeah." Went to click karma and remembered I'm in a thread discussing the fact that karma is currently unavailable. I just thought I'd share the irony of that... Because it made me chuckle.
 
How about if the karma doesn't allow for comments? Then it's just 'I agree', indicating that you... well, agree with that person's post.

This sounds like a great idea. I just don't know if it is actually something that the mods can do. Personally I have always used the disagree karma if I disagree with something so badly that even a quote and rebuttal isn't enough to express my disagreement. If I have been using this incorrectly and offensively then I definitely apologise and hope that my misuse of the system will not impact everyone else for to much longer.
 
I thought leaving short comments was the best part of the feature.

On this note... I want to take this opportunity to clear something up. When I joined the boards there seemed to be this unspoken agreement between everyone of karma etiquette. And the way neg rep was used was that if someone offended you or you disagreed so much, so violently that telling them you disagreed wasn't enough, you neg repped. But for the most part, if you disagreed but not so strong that you were like shaking, then you posted your disagreement comment in a positive rep.

That is how I use it. Because getting neg rep hurts. Getting feedback on your post that says something you don't agree with doesn't.

Recently though, I've seen a lot of people using neg rep more freely. As in if they disagree at all, they use neg rep. The fact that you can't just click "I disagree," and you have to have some explanation in the form of comments on that post to me is proof that neg rep shouldn't be used that way. So even though this agreement has been an unspoken bit of etiquette... I want to speak it. Because as I said... neg rep hurts.

A neg rep isn't a personal insult, and it's there so people can freely express that they disagree with something. It's not something that should be taken personally, and so long as it doesn't attack/bully anyone, it's free to be used by anyone who disagrees with you.

I agree than you should be able to leave neg rep without a comment, I think it'd stop a lot of arguments and people would be less inclined to take it personally/attack others.

See, herein lies the problem. You say 'agree' but that was not what I was suggesting. I was suggesting we do what's already being done by so many members and reserve neg rep for something that offends you.

There are people who, like you, believe neg rep should be used freely like this... and there are people who, like me, believe using it like that would hurt a lot of feelings. Like I said, it's been what I perceived as an unspoken piece of etiquette that you don't use neg rep this way.

I meant I agree with what previous posters had said, it was separate to my response to you. The fact is, the spoken etiquette is what matters, it is used to agree or disagree, which is what is in the FAQ.

This doesn't mean I don't think people are abusing the feature though, I'm sure people are.
