I don't see the big deal to be honest, I don't think people should take it too seriously really. Obviously abusing it is bad, but if someone wants to disagree that way then I think they might as well. Sometimes you don't want to launch into a big discussion about it, so I think it comes in handy. Then, seeing as it's not anonymous, you can PM the person and ask why they disagreed if you're really that bothered.

I'm not bothered about the 'etiquette' here, I generally do what I like as long as it's within the ToS of the site. I feel no need to play nice just because people take it too seriously. All that said, I don't give out neg karma that often anyway, but if I did I wouldn't let other people's opinions get in the way.

Perhaps it's better off not being reinstated (though obviously that's for the mods to decide).
 
It's not an unspoken rule not to use negative rep. Anyone who is given a problem about using negative rep should let me know. Frankly, negative should be used when disagreeing - the point of karma was not to have people with millions of karma points. If you go down by 1 or 10 it shouldn't matter. This is why we had to remove the number values. And if people are going to get up in arms because they got one negative rep we WILL remove the feature permanently. There are better things in life to be upset about.

And once again it is not negative rep that is the problem, it is nasty karma comments and fighting going back and forth via karma. Red or green has no bearing on it whatsoever.

I stand by my statement earlier that if you're offended by a little red box and points being taken away, then maybe you don't truly understand the point of a forum.

A forum is not a "karma contest" or "let's see how much I can get repped". It's a neat little perk, and it's fun, but that's not why we are here. So if you're upset about getting points taken away from your karma, then maybe you need to re-evaluate why you are here.

As long as there is no one being out of line with it, I see no problem. Like I also said before, people leave rude comments with positive karma, so just getting rid of negative karma wouldn't solve the problem at hand.

A to the men... Seriously. If people are getting that upset because someone disagrees with their opinion and leaves some negative reputation, maybe the feature should be gone permanently. It's not that big a deal.

I wish I could rep this 😉 haha I don't understand why people care about neg reps. Karma is useful because it makes things a little easier, but overall, it really isn't a necessity and if we can't use it properly, then maybe we don't need it.
 
Ok. Sad that it had to go away, but I understand why it could become troublesome. Kind of wish I had saved the karma I got, there was some nice comments in there.

I've had this problem before, that someone got pissed at me for disagreeing with their post (which was rude to me IMO). So even when I disagree, I can't actually "disagree"...
 
I agree with the mods on this one. I'm sorry to see karma gone, but why should the mods spend so much time having to police it? They do a great job, and I think it's not a good idea to complain about a decision that they made in the best interest of the board. It's not that big a deal. I'm grateful to be here at all.

I miss karma, it doesn't feel like BB without it... But I totally understand why it's been disabled. I can see why people could taking it offensively when they get negative rep. I remember I got negative rep one time, and it did hurt my feelings. But in the end, I respected their action. It wasn't an act of hate or insult, they did it because they simply disagreed with what I said.

I hope that when the reputation is enabled again, that both the positive and negative rep won't be abused. It's a nice way to leave a short and sweet comment on someone's post though, and I love being able to show my agreement to what people say. I hope it comes back soon. 🙂
 
Oh, should have noticed this thread first. That's too bad. I get it though. Hopefully after a temporary ban people will learn to use it properly. It's just going to take some getting used to.
 
Aw man! I'm new to the boards and this was one of my favorite features. I enjoyed being able to send someone some quick love or drop a quick 'I agree!' into the discussion. Perhaps removing negative karma would be the best solution.

This is what I dislike, disagreeing/negative karma is just as relevant and important as positive karma/agreeing with people. Disagreeing with you doesn't mean I dislike you. It doesn't mean I never want to speak to you, and it doesn't mean we're not friends.

Negative karma just expresses "I don't agree" (so long as people don't leave a mean comment, leaving a comment expressing disagreement is fine). I don't understand why everyone takes it so personally.

I LOVE it when people disagree with me, we have more to talk about!

Yep. And I've seen lots of new people absolutely ripped into on the boards by people saying that we don't use negative karma. I could't give two flying... foxes if I we have karma or not. It is a place for discussion after all. As long as we are allowed to freely express our thoughts and opinions then I'm still happy.
 
I guess the point is though that on a discussion board than if all you have to say is 'I agree' then maybe you're wasting your time saying that. It's not really worth it as it doesn't add to the conversation. Maybe if you read something that you find really truly amazing and insightful then you could PM the person saying 'wow, just read your post on spangel and it was incredible, really agree' or something.
