Totally agree! I love that scene! I find it amusing when women talk about sex around men, and the men get all uncomfortable, as Mal did in that scene. I was sorta surprised Jayne didn't get uncomfortable too, then again we are talking the man who "went to his bunk" after seeing the female client.

I think thats a very feminist way to think about it (one that Joss employs to no end and I find equally annyoing). The idea that men are uncomfortable about women showing sexuality is endlessly portrayed in media i'm sure but is nonetheless complete nonsense. Mal showed confusion, not un-comfortableness...Jayne showed fairly obvious enjoyment.

In cases like this, I never really understand the confusion. Kaylee is identified from the very pilot to be very open in her sexuality, then its confusing to certain viewers when she expresses this? I can only assume it's peoples misconceptions getting in the way of a writers delivery.

...I'd just hazard a guess that it's the misconceptions that need editing...not the writers delivery.

Kaylee was always portrayed as a sexual woman. Not in an obvious, hit-you-on-the-head-with-it way, just some hints here or there. She was very tolerant towards Inara's job and talked openly and happily about it with her, the way she ate that strawberry, the "boy whores" comment... the list goes on.

You know, people always talk about that men get uncomfortable when women talk about sex but I've never actually experienced it. And I talk about sex. A lot. Maybe I just know only pretty open-minded men but... I somehow doubt that.
Also, that very clearly is not why Mal got uncomfortable. To me, he always seemed to see Kaylee somewhat as a little sister and and he was simply shocked to hear her talk so openly about using a vibrator because of that, not because she's a woman per se.

And you were surprised that Jayne didn't get uncomfortable? Really? He's always on the way to his bunk every time one of the other characters just mention anything that could possibly be sex-related.

It can happen. personally it only has happened to me a bit around woman i dont know. Other than that I am open to talk about anything.

I have seen it happen too where certain guys feel all threatened to a degree, that the woman is just as open as talking about it. Dont know maybe they think their threatening there manliness or something...

I think it was obvious right from the get-go that although Kaylee was quite open with her sexuality, Mal was uncomfortable when she displayed it. I don't think it had anything to do with Joss making a comment on men being uncomfortable around sexual women at all. Jayne for example was perfectly thrilled to hear any comments made about sex. Book (despite being initially thrown by Inara's profession) adjusted rather well to her position as a companion and Wash was very comfortable with Zoe being a strong, sexual woman.

I think Mal was uncomfortable with Kaylee displaying her sexuality simply because of how he viewed Kaylee. He had no problems whatsoever with making crude comments about Inara, but when it came to Kaylee, I don't think he saw her as a sexual woman, but rather a young, innocent little sister type. When Jayne made the comment in the first episode about Kaylee wishing Simon was a gynecologist, he was immediately dismissed from the table. It was not OK to make such a comment about Kaylee, but Mal has said worse to and about Inara. So I think it's all about how he sees the women on the ship.

I think it's more "commonly known", or "more accpeted" for males to be the ones talking about sex openly.

There's other factors too. Like, religion etc etc.

I tend to freak men out alot, and the 97% of the guys I've met HAVE been uncomfortable when I've opened my mouth (no.. not like that..)
