I know I'm super-late, but I just started watching the show, thanks to Netflix. 😀 I'm watching episode 1.5 as I type this, and the moment when Bette finds out Tina is pregnant was absolutely beautiful. 😀

I need folks to discuss with! LOL

Oooh, I love The L Word!! Even though I haven't finished watching season 1 yet and my sig is a scene from a later episode which I haven't seen and only know about because of Youtube clips xD

Shane has to be my favourite character so far, what about you?

I think Alice is my favorite character over all, but I am strongly attracted to Shane, which is weird since I'm usually into femmes. 😉 But I love her rocker-chick look; it's HAWT. 😀

I only saw a few episodes of season 1, but I'd have to say Alice would be my favourite too. From what I saw, I actually didn't like Shane very much at all.

Alice is adorable. Plus, she's bi, with a mom who acts too young for her age, so I definitely identify with her more than the others. LOL I don't know what it is about Shane that attracts me so much... Like I said, she's not my usual "type" at all. To quote Willow "'Cause I'm not big with the butch". 😛

Oh, I loved the first two or so seasons of The L Word, after that it got ... weird, to say the least. But I adore Alice and Dana, while Jenny is probably my most hated fictional character in the WORLD, lol. I just want to throw something at the TV whenever she's on screen.

AMEN. OMG, I hate her!!! Seriously... Nothing against Mia Kirshner, but I'm only on episode 6 and so far my hatred for Jenny only grows.

I used to watch The L Word. Saw almost every episode, the ones I didn't see were all form s3 cos that was just way too hard to watch imo.

I did like the show a lot and watched every episode right after it aired, but the show just really blew it with the last season. I won't elaborate since you haven't watched that far yet, but the last season just leaves you with a general WTF feeling.

My favourite character in the early seasons was actually Jenny. Don't hate me 😀
But yeah, that also ended in s6.
Seriously, this might make you all hate me, but I could just really relate to her somehow.

As for hot....just wait 'til Carmen enters the stage 😀

jenny love :D
I adore The L Word. I've been checking out the seasons on DVD from the library and plan on buying them in November.

Carmen is definitely the hottest though I love the classic beauty of Helena and think that Jenny has a unique look.

I can imagine dating Alice but I would get annoyed with her politlical beliefs (as did the soldier she was dating). I would have a fling with Shane. I definitely would want to have a one-night stand with Papi (with her reputation)! I empathize A LOT with Bette.

I can't stand Tina. Every season I dislike her more and more.

Something that happens with Dana had me sobbing. Won't go into detail since you are on S1.

I love Jenny. There was a section of the series that I was rolling my eyes at some of her rants and didn't like her air of superiority but then when I found out what happened to her when she was little and the kind of atmosphere she grew up in it put everything in perspective. Jenny is by far my favorite character! I cheer her on so much and love how artistic and outspoken she is and find myself disliking the other characters more for talking behind her back or not realizing how awesome Jenny is. Jenny is actually one of my favorite characters on any series.

could not agree more, jenny love :D
I appreciate you guys leaving out the spoilers. 🙂 I have all the rest of the seasons on my Instant Queue but Netflix only has S1 on DVD, so I have to watch it slowly... But I can't wait to finish this disc so I can send it off to get the next one.
I guess my thing with Jenny is that I have been cheated on, and I know exactly how badly it tears you up inside to catch someone doing that to you, especially someone you never imagined would. I empathize with Tim on a very deep, personal level, and I find Jenny absolutely revolting for what she did and how she has handled it. Her actions immediately following him catching her with Marina sickened me to watch because you can't do one big gesture to prove your love and make everything right again, and that's exactly what she tried to do.
I really love Bette and Tina together, although sometimes Bette is a little too self-centered and focused on her work. I'm hoping things will get better in that department. I love Tina, which is weird for me since I hated Laurel Holloman as Justine on "Angel". LOL
Maybe Jenny will change my mind later on but for now I really, strongly dislike the character. Like I told Kristine on Facebook, right now every time I see her on screen it makes me want to punch her in the face. LMAO

I like Justine on AtS three times more than I like Tina on TLW. lol

I think that being unfaithful to someone that loves and trusts you is one of the worse things a person can do. It is such a hurtful and cruel thing and it is emotional abuse. The L Word does a good job though of portraying the heartbreak and anger and grief of the person betrayed and the conflicted emotions and eventual remorse and self-disgust of the cheater. Not neccessarily with Jenny's character though. She is too absorbed in her own inner darkness to be able to put herself in the shoes of the people that she hurts. She's a character that is barely surviving being alive and dealing with very dark emotions and can't just be there for someone else without it coming back to her own issues.

I empathized a lot with Tim too. He is such a good man and played well by Eric Mabius (love him on Ugly Betty). Jenny never truly realized what a great husband and person Tim was but it has to deal more with her issues with men and relationships than it does with him or her relationship with him. And the emotional affect cheating has on others is not something she will ever competely grasp. When I look at her actions I do it through the Depressive Lense. She is deeply depressed and lost and dealing with a traumatic upbringing and it affected the way she treated others and reacted to life and love. If it had just been the story of a woman that cheated on a trusting man that loved her I would find her insufferable and wouldn't want to watch her either. She wasn't in the right mindframe to get married or give herself to another person and have it not end badly.

Very, very well said. Of course I am still early in the series, but I think a lot of what you said is really true. I will wait to watch what happens between them, but I'm pretty sure I'm still gonna hate Jenny. LOL

Jenny makes my list of top ten favorite characters of all time.

1. Buffy Anne Summers (BtVS/AtS)
2. Lex Luthor (Smallville)
3. Meredith Grey (Greys Anatomy)
4. Dean Winchester (Supernatural)
5. Jenny Schecter (The L Word)
6. Dan Scott (One Tree Hill)
7. Blair Waldorf (Gossip Girl)
8. Adrian Monk (Monk)
9. Christina Yang (Greys Anatomy)
10. John Locke (Lost)

When it comes to Jenny's relationship with Tim, yes, you will still hate her. I think that as the seasons progress you'll like her more and then have your heart ripped out by what happens in S6 (haven't watched it yet myself but I am a spoiler whore). Being the "depressed" character is very hard and probably draining on the actor/actress. A lot of fans can't relate and either want that character to spank their inner moppet and "get over" whatever it is that is making them so melancholy and masochistic (Buffy, Peyton, Meredith) or fully become the villain so that they can love to hate them and not be iffy about the character.

What are your opinions on the series so far? Do you think it does well in portraying GLBTI characters?

It took me a long time to realize where I saw the actress that played Shane. I knew she looked familiar. She was on the quickly cancelled Young Americans series.

I really love the series as a whole so far. I think it does a wonderful job of looking into the lives of GLB people and what they go through. I was talking to Kristine on Facebook earlier, talking about how emotional it has been to watch Bette and Tina trying to have a baby together. As a hetero couple, my husband and I struggled for 3 years to get pregnant and all we had to do was keep having sex. I can't imagine having to go through the things that a gay couple would, if they were trying to have a child. It's so sad but awesome that someone would be willing to do all of that for a baby. 🙂
As someone who lived in fear for a long time of anyone finding out that I am bi, I can totally relate to Dana. Her feelings of being terrified someone would see her in the "wrong place at the wrong time" are all too familiar. I used to FREAK about going to the gay clubs around my college, so scared someone I knew would see me there and tell my family. Now that I'm older, I don't care. I mean, I'm a married woman and I believe in monogamy, so I don't go around talking about being bi to everyone I know just because I don't want to deal with the drama it would cause, but if someone asks I'm not going to lie about it anymore.
But anyway, as a whole, I am loving the series. I can't wait to get through it all so I can see what happens to all these characters!

I've never been uncomfortable with being different and was always strong in my convictions and emotions. I think it made my life easier because someone else in my position would have had a lot of trouble. There would have been a lot of stress and feelings of alienation. I was raised in a devout Christian/Catholic home but I am bisexual and a Pagan. They are also all meat eaters while I am a vegan. I've heard everything from "You have demons in you" to "you're sick in the head and should see a psychiatrist". Sometimes they thought I was the polar opposite from everyone else in the family just to cause problems. But I was just being true to myself.

I know my mother would rather that I be attracted to females than studying witchcraft. They can sometimes make jokes about the fact that I am bi but it is still obviously something that they are against and they still act homophobic.

I was really moved by Bette's appreciation of art. She can feel so awe-inspired by a painting or sculpture that it brings tears to her eyes. I am too analytical for that. It must feel nice to just let the beauty and majesty of something overtake you.

I could have written that first paragraph myself, to some extent. :)
I have to say this show had such amazing potential at the start but tended to drop dramatically after a short time anways that is just my opinion. For me though I am all about the Dana love. Ms fairbanks never failed to make me laugh plus I think she is the most relatable character on the show. Her interaction with Alice is just priceless 😀 Now in terms of Jenny there is something so fascinating about that character, the thoughts, the darkness the outspoken kookiness I love it all. Plus Mia is a terrific actress, I had the pleasure of meeting her at a convention and she is the prettiest sweetest thing, she has a touch of Jenny in her which I found amusing.
In terms of hotness Bette and Carmen are just insanely hot in my eyes, im sure its no coincidence that I ended up with an Alpha-Latina, the best of them both lol. Anyways enjoy the rest of the show and I can't wait to hear you bitch about certain storylines 😉

Ok, so I'm about halfway through the first season. I am getting totally wrapped up in these characters and I cannot wait for the next disc to get here (damn Netflix for not having the first season On Demand.... all the others are!) so I can find out what's gonna happen. I just finished the ep where Shane threw the big party on the boat and I am chomping at the bit to find out what happens with Alice and Lisa, and to see what is gonna happen with Jenny, the nutcase. LOL Also, I'm SO happy for Dana that Subaru didn't even CARE that she's a lesbian, but heartbroken because of what happened between her and Lara. 🙁

I love that as a tennis star Dana became like a lesbian icon when she "came out". She was so worried that she would lose everything and instead she had people inspired by her courage. It made her more famous and in some ways more respected instead of destroying her career or turning her somehow into a joke (the "lesbian jock").

I really liked Dana/Lara. Though there is another femme l love her with more, and another woman that I hated her with.

I'm not entirely sure, but I believe I've seen up to season four or so, and a few assorted episodes afterwards. What initially drew me to the show was the photography. I love the way the series was filmed overall.

Jenny was my favorite character in the first few seasons. There's just something about Jewish girls and writers that draws me in. I began paying less attention to her later on, but I've never disliked her, though all my friends who watch the series do. Alice has remained another favorite of mine throughout.

I can somewhat understand Jenny's plight in season one. She's thrust into this huge, unfamiliar world (Los Angeles), and Tim's busy coaching schedule left her looking for additional attention/entertainment from the only other people she knew in the city at the time. Of course, I'm sure her traumatic youth also gave her an altered view of men and their intentions in a relationship.
